Chapter 11: The Spark Before the Storm

The air above Celestial Genetic Academy shimmered faintly, fractured by invisible currents of energy flowing through the megastructures' conduits. From a distance, the city looked like a great metallic organism breathing — the pulse of technology synchronized with the heartbeat of civilization. Morning had broken, but the academy grounds never truly slept. The sound of generators and hovering drones echoed faintly under the dome sky.

Adrian awoke in his dorm room — or, what could barely be called one. The room was small, almost claustrophobic, with exposed pipes glowing faint blue, carrying nanofluid across the academy's network. His bed, a slab of polymer foam, was scattered with holosheets and microchip wafers. Floating screens hovered in front of him, flickering with formulas and gene cycle calculations he had written the night before.

His reflection in the mirror was barely human anymore. His pupils glowed faintly — not from mutation, but from the data-feed linked to his neural link. The Spider Genome had begun stabilizing, fusing into his cellular lattice with greater precision. His muscles carried an eerie calmness, as though waiting for the next command.

"Good morning, Adrian," a soft voice greeted him.

The voice belonged not to a human, but to AURA, the adaptive AI assistant linked to his gene system. Her holographic avatar floated near his shoulder — serene, faintly glowing, eyes like endless streams of data.

"You slept for exactly three hours and twenty-two minutes," AURA said. "Brainwave activity suggests excessive calculation even during subconscious states. Do you wish to review your dream logs?"

Adrian smirked slightly, rubbing his face. "Nah. I already know what I dreamt of — formulas, theories, and my glorious future self laughing on top of a pile of alien fossils."

AURA tilted her head slightly, an almost human gesture she had learned from observing him. "Humor level detected: mild arrogance with hints of sarcasm. Adjusting personality filter to match."

He sighed. "Don't adjust anything. I like my arrogance raw."

He stood up, stretched, and pulled on his academy uniform — a sleek nano-weave suit that adjusted to the user's muscle tension. The emblem of the Federation Genetic Corps glimmered faintly on his left shoulder.

Today was no ordinary day. It was the Orientation for the Omega Cadet Program, where new candidates would be evaluated for advanced gene projects and field missions beyond the planet's boundaries.

Adrian walked out of the dorm, greeted by a flood of movement. Drones zipped overhead. Students of every species — human, draconian, sylvan, synthoid, and hybrid — filled the pathways, chatting, comparing gene cycle progress. The academy was a melting pot of the multiverse's evolutionary potential.

His gaze flicked briefly to Amy, who stood at the far end of the courtyard, surrounded by her squad. She looked radiant — cold, sharp, calculating. Her combat uniform shimmered faintly with embedded nanocrystals, indicating her S-tier gene cycle stabilization. The difference between them was almost comical. She had status, funding, and perfect integration. He had brains, sarcasm, and a habit of breaking scientific limits.

Their eyes met briefly. For a moment, her icy expression softened. Then, with practiced precision, she turned away.

"Still pretending you don't care, huh?" Adrian murmured under his breath. "Classic tsundere energy."

AURA's voice chimed quietly. "Emotion detected: mild amusement masking underlying affection."

"Don't analyze me, AURA," he said. "That's my job."

The announcement bell rang, vibrating through the air. "All cadets, report to the Grand Spire for the Omega briefing. Attendance is mandatory."

The Grand Spire stood like a needle piercing the sky — thousands of meters tall, wrapped in holographic banners of the Federation's emblems. Inside, hundreds of cadets gathered. The sound of conversation faded when General Irion stepped onto the platform — a towering man whose presence radiated discipline.

"Cadets," Irion began, voice carrying authority that silenced even the whispering androids, "the Omega Program is not a test of strength alone. It is a test of adaptability. You will face conditions that simulate multiversal anomalies. Fail here, and you will not qualify for field operations beyond this world."

The air thickened with tension.

Irion continued, "This year, our academy has been granted special clearance. The top performers will be given Starships — prototypes capable of traversing dimensional rifts. However—" he paused, eyes narrowing, "—only those whose gene cycles demonstrate evolutionary potential will qualify."

Whispers erupted. A Starship? For cadets?

Adrian's eyes lit up. "A Starship? Oh, finally, something fun to steal— I mean, earn."

AURA projected a tiny sigh emoji. "Your chances of 'earning' one are statistically improbable, given your current rank."

He grinned. "AURA, you wound me."

Irion gestured toward the side of the platform. Several armored crates were brought forward, guarded by soldiers in exo-suits. Each crate contained experimental gene modules, rumored to grant access to unique evolution paths.

"These modules," the general said, "represent the next step in our research. They will be assigned at random. Fate will decide your evolution."

A metallic voice from the back muttered, "More like politics will."

Adrian smirked. "He's not wrong."

When his name was finally called, he stepped forward. The crate assigned to him looked plain, almost unimpressive. Other cadets whispered, amused.

"Look at his crate — probably defective."

"Yeah, the academy's pity gift."

He ignored them. Inside the crate, floating within a cylinder of blue fluid, was a small orb — crystalline, pulsing faintly. The tag read: Experimental Gene Module - Code Designation: X-Ω (Unknown Classification).

AURA blinked in his display feed. "Warning. Genetic pattern unrecognized. Probability of instability: 89.7%."

Adrian's lips curved into a slow grin. "Perfect."

Amy's voice came from behind him. "You're insane if you inject that."

"Insanity is just misunderstood genius," he replied smoothly. "Besides, what's the worst that could happen?"

"Death."

He shrugged. "Been there. Got reincarnated."

The room went silent. Amy blinked, unsure if he was joking. (He wasn't.)

Later that night, the dorms were silent. Adrian sat cross-legged on the floor, the cylinder placed before him. AURA hovered nervously.

"This procedure is unauthorized," she said. "If detected, you'll be expelled. Or worse."

"Expelled from mediocrity?" he asked. "Good."

He pressed his hand against the scanner. The cylinder hissed, opening. The orb dissolved into mist, swirling around his arm before sinking into his skin. A searing pain shot through him — every nerve screaming, every cell screaming louder.

AURA's tone grew urgent. "Cellular division at 300% above safe threshold. DNA rewriting protocol unstable!"

Adrian gritted his teeth, laughter bubbling despite the agony. "This… this is what I live for."

The light filled the room. His body lifted off the ground, veins glowing with fractal blue and gold patterns. His heartbeat echoed like thunder. Memories flashed — past life, experiments, failures, dreams of evolution.

Then silence.

When the light faded, he dropped to the floor, panting. His body shimmered faintly — no longer quite human, yet not alien either. His eyes glowed like galaxies.

AURA's voice returned, shaky. "Integration complete. Classification confirmed: Gene Cycle — Void X Prototype. Signature masked successfully."

He sat up slowly, exhaling. "Void X… huh. Sounds cool. What's it do?"

"Unknown," AURA replied. "But I estimate exponential potential."

He smiled faintly. "Good. Let's break the system, AURA."
