Chapter 37 - Chapter 036: The Strongest Person in the Zaraki District

The Zaraki District was chaos incarnate.

Shigure had only been here for a short while, and already, he had witnessed several bouts of savage fighting.

The souls who lived here were not shinigami — but they were far more violent than the average wandering spirit. They fought like wild beasts, clutching whatever crude weapons they could find — harpoons, hoes, chipped blades, even kitchen knives — and hacking each other apart for something as simple as a few mouthfuls of muddy water.

When one fell, their spirit particles scattered like dust, dissolving into the parched air.

The victor, drenched in blood and sweat, would laugh madly and claim the spoils — water, food, or the still-warm body of his foe. Some even made bread mixed with blood and called it a feast.

It wasn't as if Seireitei was unaware of the carnage that unfolded in the remote districts like Zaraki.

They simply didn't care.

Resources, they said, were limited.

Every soul born into the Soul Society was assigned a district, their fate sealed the moment they arrived. Some were fortunate enough to find themselves in the inner rings of Rukongai, where there was food, clean water, and protection. Others — the unlucky ones — were cast into places like Zaraki, where only the strong survived.

There was no fairness, only balance.

Those who perished here contributed nothing but the equilibrium of souls. As long as the death rate in these outskirts didn't disrupt the cosmic balance, Seireitei would not intervene.

Unless, of course, a hollow appeared.

Because when a soul was devoured by a hollow, its essence fed the cycle of Hueco Mundo, strengthening the legions of the damned. That was the only time the shinigami came — not to save, but to slaughter and purify.

Shigure's gaze swept across the wasteland.

He had heard that phrase — "resources are limited" — too many times.

But were they really?

He doubted it.

The scarcity belonged to Rukongai, not to Seireitei. Within those pristine white walls, the nobles dined on delicacies, draped themselves in silk, and debated art over wine. Meanwhile, in the outer districts, souls clawed at each other for a drop of water.

It wasn't scarcity. It was theft.

The nobles hoarded what the commoners bled for.

Once, there had been uprisings — desperate civilians trying to storm Seireitei's gates. But they were crushed, their rebellion erased, their names forgotten.

The nobles built walls high enough to shut out the screams, and called it peace.

Even now, a soul could only enter Seireitei if they became a shinigami — and even then, they served the same nobles who had damned them.

Gotei 13, for all its glory, still bent the knee to Central 46 — and Central 46 served the Five Great Noble Clans.

"At the end of the day," Shigure murmured, watching the dying light cast shadows across the dirt, "the world is what it is because of the nobles. They are the true winners… and everyone else, the disposable balance."

His eyes shifted to a nearby scuffle — a brutal brawl over a leaking water jar.

When the dust cleared, the victor stood panting, covered in blood. A rough-faced middle-aged man, clutching a kitchen knife slick with gore. Four corpses lay sprawled at his feet.

He laughed breathlessly, limping toward the water and gulping it greedily, not caring that it was red with blood. To him, it was sweet.

And then, the light dimmed as a shadow fell over him.

He froze and looked up.

A man stood before him — white haori fluttering faintly, calm eyes piercing through the chaos.

The middle-aged fighter's first instinct was wariness. "Shinigami?" he spat. "You look different. What are you doing here? You want my water too?"

Shigure shook his head. "No," he said calmly. "I came to ask you a question."

The man squinted, his grip tightening around his blade. "What question?"

"Who," Shigure asked quietly, "is the strongest fighter in the Zaraki District?"

For a moment, silence. Then, the man's cracked lips curved into a cruel grin. "Hah! Strongest? You're looking at him! Didn't you see? Four of them dead, and I'm still standing!"

He puffed out his chest, proud as a warlord, despite the blood seeping from his side.

Shigure regarded him in silence, then sighed softly. "Is that so?"

In the next heartbeat, whoosh! — his figure vanished.

A sharp crack echoed, followed by a choked cry.

The man's body flew backward, smashing into the dirt with a thud.

"Guh…!" he groaned, clutching his ribs.

Shigure stepped forward, his expression still calm. "You don't seem very strong to me." he said flatly. "Now—tell me. Who really is the strongest in Zaraki? If your answer doesn't satisfy me…"

He didn't finish. He didn't need to. The cold spiritual pressure that filled the air spoke louder than words.

The man's breath hitched. He had lived long enough in Zaraki to know what came next if he didn't obey.

After a trembling pause, he rasped, "Wait—! I know who you're looking for!"

Shigure raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"There's… there's one." the man stammered. "A monster. He lives somewhere deeper in the district. Everyone who's ever tried to fight him… died."

He swallowed, his throat dry. "They say he doesn't fight for food or water. He fights for fun. For the thrill. The stronger you are, the happier he gets. That's why he stays here—because everyone here's strong."

Shigure's expression softened, faint amusement flickering in his eyes. "Now that's a better answer."

"Show me."

The man hesitated, glancing at the blood on his hands. "You… want me to lead you there?"

"Of course." Shigure replied simply. "You're still alive, aren't you?"

The man's jaw clenched. With visible pain, he forced himself up, using his kitchen knife as a cane. "Fine… follow me."

Together, they made their way across the barren fields. The heat pressed down like punishment. Cracked earth stretched endlessly, and what few trees remained were little more than skeletons of wood and dust.

After some time, they reached a patch of dry forest. The air here was still, heavy with tension.

Under the largest, half-dead tree lay a man — broad-shouldered, wild-haired, a long scar tracing down his face. His chest rose and fell slowly in sleep, and beside him lay a chipped, worn blade covered in bite marks, as if its owner had tried to eat it out of boredom.

The middle-aged guide hesitated, his legs trembling. "T-that's him." he whispered.

"Then call him." Shigure said quietly.

The man swallowed hard, stepped forward, and shouted hoarsely, "Zaraki-sama! Someone wants to challenge you!"

The breeze stilled.

From under the tree, the burly man's eyelids lifted slowly.

A single sharp glint of awareness shone from beneath his tangled hair.

The monster of Zaraki had awakened.
