Chapter 41 - Chapter 040: Shinigami Zaraki

Back at the Eleventh Division.

The return of Gosuke Shigure was expected, but the man walking behind him — a towering, scarred soul whose every step carried a raw, untamed presence — immediately drew attention.

Whispers began circulating among the division members as they noticed the unfamiliar figure. His spiritual energy wasn't faint like an ordinary soul's — it pulsed, heavy and wild, even though it lacked the refined control of a trained shinigami.

Nao Yamashiro, the division's Fourth Seat, happened to be the first to encounter them near the training courtyard. She blinked once, twice, then frowned slightly as her eyes ran over Zaraki's appearance — the ragged, sleeveless robes, the jagged scars that ran across his arms and neck, and the crude, chipped sword that hung loosely in his grip.

"Captain…" she called out, tone uncertain but sharp with curiosity. "Who is he?"

Shigure paused mid-step, the hem of his haori fluttering lightly in the afternoon wind. He turned his gaze toward Nao, calm as ever, his eyes narrowing slightly in amusement.

"This one," he replied, "is a man I found in Rukongai — or rather, someone who found me."

Yamashiro's gaze flicked toward Zaraki again. He stood there motionless, his grey eyes glinting faintly beneath the shade of his unkempt hair. The air around him seemed to hum with suppressed ferocity.

"Captain… he's not a shinigami, right?"

Shigure shook his head. "Not yet." Then, with a quiet confidence that carried across the courtyard, he added, "But once he becomes one, he'll be terrifyingly powerful."

That statement alone earned several murmurs from the squad members nearby.

Nao raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "A strong soul from Rukongai, huh? Even the toughest of them still fall short of a real shinigami. What makes him so special?"

Her tone wasn't disrespectful — just honest curiosity.

Shigure chuckled softly. "You'll see soon enough. For now, just remember this — strength doesn't always come from training or refinement. Sometimes, it's born from surviving."

His words carried weight, and for a brief moment, Nao had no reply.

Her gaze lingered on Zaraki again, and this time she noticed the faint shift in his expression — the corners of his mouth twitched upward in something that looked like a grin.

Zaraki could feel her attention. Even without words, he could sense that this woman was strong — strong enough to stand tall without fear before him.

That alone made his blood stir.

Although she was a woman, to him, gender didn't matter. A fighter was a fighter, and her posture, her stance, the subtle rhythm of her breathing — all of it screamed readiness.

A raw grin spread across his face, and for a brief moment, killing intent flickered in his eyes like lightning.

Nao's expression hardened instantly. As a proud member of the Eleventh Division — and a born warrior — she didn't back down. Her own reiatsu rippled faintly in response, not out of intimidation, but out of excitement.

Two predators recognizing one another.

The courtyard's air thickened, tension coiling like a drawn bowstring.

But before either could act, Shigure's voice — calm, but carrying the weight of a commander — cut through the air.

"If you two want to fight," he said evenly, "save it for later. Zaraki is already part of our division now. You'll have plenty of chances to test each other soon enough."

Both combatants froze for a moment.

Nao exhaled softly and lowered her stance, giving a reluctant nod. "Understood, Captain."

Zaraki's wild smile faded into something more neutral — though his eyes still gleamed with the thrill of anticipation. He wasn't disappointed. In fact, the idea that he would get to fight so many strong warriors later excited him even more.

Satisfied that the situation was under control, Shigure motioned for Zaraki to follow him. "Come. Before anything else, we need to make your registration official."

He turned on his heel and walked toward the barracks, his haori fluttering behind him. Zaraki followed, his heavy steps echoing against the stone walkway.

The process of registering a new shinigami wasn't complicated.

Since the founding of the Gotei 13, the Gen'yūshin'an-juku established by Yamamoto Genryūsai had evolved into what was now known as the Shinō Spiritual Arts Academy. It became the Soul Society's central institution — a place where raw spiritual power was molded into discipline and purpose.

Most members of the Gotei 13 were graduates of that academy. They spent six long years mastering swordsmanship, Kidō, and the fundamentals of spiritual control before earning the right to don the black robes.

But not all shinigami came from there.

In the long history of the Soul Society, there had always been those who never studied within the Academy's walls — the self-taught, the prodigies, the survivors of Rukongai who awakened their own powers through battle and instinct.

Long before the academy's rise, the Soul Society was chaotic. Powerful souls roamed freely, creating their own schools of swordsmanship and teaching apprentices however they pleased. Only after Yamamoto's victories did order begin to form.

Even now, that legacy lingered.

To become a shinigami, the requirements were deceptively simple — possess spiritual power, and wield a Zanpakutō.

That was all.

Training could refine technique, but power… power could not be taught.

Take, for example, Kurosaki Ichigo in the future — a man who never studied Kidō or academy theory, yet stood among the strongest because his spirit and blade resonated as one.

That was the essence of what defined a shinigami.

When the role of shinigami first appeared, Oetsu Nimaiya forged the first sealed blades (asauchi) — the earliest forms of the modern Zanpakutō — and distributed them across the Soul Society. Souls who possessed sufficient spiritual potential would take these blades, live and sleep beside them, allowing their own energy to awaken the weapon's soul.

Through that bond, the sealed sword would transform into a true Zanpakutō.

Over countless years, countless shinigami had fallen in battle. With their deaths, their Zanpakutō reverted to inert asauchi once more. These dormant swords were recovered, stored, and eventually passed down to new generations of students at the Academy.

But not all were retrieved.

Many blades were lost in the outer districts — forgotten relics buried in dust and time. Some were found by wandering souls whose power resonated with them. When those souls awakened the swords once again, they, too, became shinigami — even without training.

Zaraki was one such anomaly.

Unohana Retsu herself had once sensed his terrifying presence in the lawless Zaraki District and considered recruiting him. But for reasons unknown, she chose not to.

Now, years later, fate had brought him to Seireitei — under the hand of another Kenpachi.

The current one.

Shigure personally completed the paperwork, submitting Zaraki's registration to the appropriate officers. With that, Zaraki officially became a shinigami of the Gotei 13.

Afterward, Shigure led him to the division's armory — a small storage building filled with rows of neatly folded black shihakushō and white sashes.

"Here." Shigure said, pulling a uniform from one of the shelves. "Try this. It should fit your size."

There was no need to visit the Twelfth Division's tailor; the Eleventh always kept a surplus of uniforms on hand for new recruits. Dozens of freshly laundered sets were lined up by height and build, ready for use.

He handed one to Zaraki.

The latter unfolded it slowly, his rough fingers brushing over the smooth black fabric. Compared to the coarse rags he'd always worn, the uniform felt almost ceremonial — heavy, durable, yet strangely comfortable.
