Ava's eyes widened as Ryker reached out to take her hand. "Come with me," he said, his voice low and gentle. "You're not safe here."
But Ava hesitated, her mind racing with thoughts of her mother. She had to get home, had to let her know she was okay. "I don't think I can go with you," she said, trying to pull away.
Ryker's grip on her hand tightened, but he didn't hurt her. "Please, Ava," he said. "I'm trying to protect you. Kaida's not the only one who'll be coming for you."
Ava's heart skipped a beat. Coming for her? What did he mean? "I have to get home," she said, trying to sound firm. "My mom will be worried about me."
Ryker's expression softened. "I know," he said. "But you're not safe there. At least, not yet. Come with me, and I'll explain everything. I promise you'll be safe with me."
Ava looked up at Ryker, searching for reassurance. She saw something in his eyes, something that told her he was telling the truth. She took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay," she said. "I'll go with you."
Ryker's face relaxed into a small smile. "Good," he said. "Let's go."
As they walked, Ava couldn't help but wonder what she'd gotten herself into. But with Ryker by her side, she felt a sense of safety she hadn't felt in a long time.
