We returned to the settlement in silence. The battle had stopped, both sides waiting to see what came from the meeting. People stared at us as we passed, questions in their eyes.
Elena pulled us aside immediately. "What happened? What did she say?"
"She claims King Aldric is the Weaver. That he's been orchestrating everything from the beginning." Kael's voice was flat, emotionless. "She offered alliance if we help expose and remove him from power."
"That's ridiculous. King Aldric might be cold and calculating, but he's not a traitor."
"Isn't he?" I said quietly. "Think about it. Really think about it. How did he always survive when everyone else died? How did he always seem to know things he shouldn't? How did he recover from losing power so easily?"
"You're actually considering believing her?"
"I'm considering that we might have been wrong about who our real enemy is."
