Climbing back onto his mare, Vincent made his way to his next destination—his household.
One of the guards took the horse away while Vincent strode toward his study.
The moment he stepped inside, his eyes fell on the line of maids standing unnaturally stiff. The clicking of his boots against the tiled floor was the only sound echoing through the room.
"What have you learned?" His voice was deep and calm.
Gabriel turned to him.
"I found the two maids who testified against Annette. They're over there."
He gestured toward the two young women standing close to one another at the side of the room.
Everyone held their breath as Vincent took his time walking toward them.
He stopped directly in front of the women.
They trembled with fear, neither daring to lift her head to meet his gaze.
An agonizing moment of silence followed.
"I want you to recount everything you told the councilors."
The women swallowed, glancing nervously at each other.
