Chapter 43 - Between Freedom and Constraint

As the meeting wound down, Bane and Chaos were sent back to their Dorm—this time in their own carriage—while the Teachers remained behind to discuss a few matters before the new term began.

Back in their Dorm, Chaos and Bane showered and relaxed, floating languidly in the bathing pool until Morgranna called them for dinner at six. After drying off, they donned sleeping robes, groomed their horns, and brushed their hair before heading downstairs to dine on the balcony.

They soaked in the view as they ate—an old ritual that felt freshly charged. The grounds of the Senior Academy spread before them, a dramatic change from what they remembered of the Elementary Academy.

As dusk settled on the Senior Academy, the scenery outside Chaos and Bane's Dorm unfolded like a living painting. Shadows stretched across the velvet lawn, framed by ancient trees whose branches caught the last strands of golden sunlight. Lanterns blinked to life along winding cobblestone paths, casting gentle halos onto dew-damp grass. Far off, the silhouette of the old clocktower rose significant and solemn against a sky brushed with indigo and violet. At the same time, sporadic laughter drifted up from students passing between Dorms and the luminous windows of the library.

A gentle breeze carried the faint, sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine. From above, the flickering lights of the labyrinthine Academy buildings shimmered with a sense of expectation, as though the grounds themselves awaited some new adventure to begin. Students strolled or rode carriages, heading to evening pursuits such as night-markets, music festivals, recitals, and even late-night sparring. Cafés and restaurants bustled as students gathered for food, drink, and company.

Chaos and Bane, sipping hot chocolate and snuggled on the balcony sofa under ambient lantern light, discussed exploring the Academy once tomorrow's lessons were over. They'd already received their timetable: classes from nine to four with an hour for lunch, Monday through Friday, weekends off. Those with missions had to finish their tasks before taking a day to rest, unless the mission ended just before the weekend.

Life here was structured, but more relaxed than at the Elementary Academy. Though their time at the Elementary Academy would only last until year's end, they felt they could endure it until then. They really did look forward to Junior Academy and the similar freedom it held.

Sensing their shifting emotions, their Mammys gently asked how they were feeling. On hearing their reply, the Mammys expressed understanding, promising to pass their feelings on to the Nursery Elders and Head Nocturne, who could keep an eye on things.

Content with this, Chaos and Bane decided to head to bed; it was nearly ten. They quickly drifted to sleep, lulled by the ongoing activity beyond their windows.

Meanwhile, Beelzebub, Zera, and the other Teachers and their Mates continued their meeting. They discussed Chaos and Bane's recent mental state and the frustration that came each time they were unable to complete the Forms their bodies demanded.

Mugs of tea and a few pastries dotted the table. The mood was warm but thoughtful, the group sinking gratefully into comfortable chairs after a long day.

Beelzebub (running a hand through his hair): "You saw how close Chaos and Bane got in the video feed. They pushed right to the edge, but when it came to actually wielding Mana… nothing. They were frustrated, but stayed level-headed."

Zera (softly, with pride): "I expected a meltdown. But watching them work through their annoyance—it actually felt constructive. They're so aware of what's missing."

Nyx: "Other kids would act out, but these two seemed almost relieved to put a name to the problem. I heard Bane say he hated not understanding his body. It's clearly personal, maybe even a sore spot."

Selene (nodding): "They're tenacious. And considering everything else this past month, it's impressive they're staying focused. But you two don't seem as worried as usual."

Beelzebub (smiling): "That's because Tian Dao is lending a hand. The Oath they made is powerful. It isn't just motivation—it's a boost in mastering Knowledge. Once they access Mana, I wouldn't be surprised if it all clicks fast."

Moros: "So you think they'll race through Mana training?"

Zera: "Not without effort, but yes. Tian Dao helps in strange ways. They'll need to put in the hours, but with the Oath, it's like having a Teacher in your mind showing you every lesson."

Azazel: "That's reassuring, especially since we don't want them pushing themselves too hard. At least now, they'll wait for that breakthrough instead of forcing it."

Belial: "Their reactions show we can trust them to respect their limits. If they get impatient, we'll notice, but right now, they're coping better than some adults."

Beelzebub (raising his mug): "Here's to students who keep surprising us—the best way possible."

They clinked mugs, sharing a moment of camaraderie, united in their faith in their charges and the unique path unfolding for them.

Just then, Beelzebub received a message from Morgranna. After reading, he felt his heart tighten.

The others noticed the shift. "What is it?"

He relayed, "Apparently, as Chaos and Bane unwound tonight, they realised just how constricted they'd felt at the Elementary Academy—but felt that they could endure it since they'll transition by year's end."

The group paused to absorb the weight of this.

Zera (leaning forward, concerned): "That's worrying. Chaos and Bane are usually so resilient. If they're feeling boxed in, it's no small thing—especially after all they've weathered, both here and in Chaos's former world."

Moros (frowning): "Hard to hear. We want to foster growth, not stifle it. Do you think the Academy's rules tightened too much after their Awakening?"

Seraphina (thoughtful): "Maybe. The shift from nurturing to confinement can be subtle—but risky. If the kids sense we're policing them rather than supporting them, it could backfire."

Belial (quiet): "Morgranna's right to worry about the Elders' and Nocturne's reactions. Sometimes they overprotect—and that becomes pressure."

Beelzebub (nodding): "She wants us to talk to Chaos and Bane first, so they feel heard before the higher-ups step in. That's wise. We can help frame their concerns as useful feedback—not as insubordination."

Nyx (checking her terminal): "Lilith keeps a cool head, unlike some of the Elders. Should we reach out to her or wait?"

Belial: "I'd rather we talk to the kids ourselves first, like Morgranna suggested. They deserve to be heard without interference."

Zera: "Agreed. It's about trust as much as information. If we get this right, they'll gain more faith in us—and in the Academy."

Beelzebub (relieved): "So tomorrow we listen to Chaos and Bane and reassure them that change is possible, even if slow. Then we work with the Elders, Nocturne, and Lilith. Everyone agrees?"

A round of murmured affirmation answered him.

The next morning, Bane and Chaos woke up as usual, completing their morning routine before heading downstairs for breakfast. As they finished eating and sipped their coffee, a soft chime echoed through the Dorm. Morgranna opened the door, ushering in Beelzebub and Zera.

They joined Chaos and Bane at the table, each accepting a cup of coffee that Morgranna had prepared. After several quiet sips, Zera broke the silence.

"Morgranna informed us about your concerns last night. Could you describe in more detail what exactly makes you feel so restricted at the Elementary Academy? This way, we can see if there's something we can do to help, since you're likely not the only ones feeling this way."

Bane and Chaos considered for a moment before Bane spoke. "I didn't realise it until Chaos and I started living together, but the curfew at the Elementary Academy is so stifling—it feels like we're being isolated from one another."

"Sure, students can holocall, but it isn't the same. We truly understood this last night, seeing how students here at Senior Academy roam the grounds in the evenings, enjoying night-markets, restaurants, cafés, music, recitals, and even sparring. They interact, laugh, listen to music—just being together."

"We can't do that in Elementary. It makes everything feel constricting and isolating. Do you understand what we mean?" Bane finished, his voice conflicted.

Beelzebub and Zera took their time, letting the revelation sink in as puzzle pieces clicked into place.

"I do get it—truly," Zera said, eyes widening with realisation. "You've explained what always bothered me about Orientation and the Elementary Academies: they feel lifeless, still, suffocating, and repressive. Humans need connection. In Elementary, that's missing."

Bane and Chaos nodded. "Yes, that's just it."

"Thank you for clarifying," Beelzebub replied with conviction. "We'll explicitly convey this to the Elders and Head Nocturne on behalf of you and the other Children."

"Now, it's time for your lessons. We'll join you shortly, after communicating this revelation." He escorted them out of their Dorm to training as he and Zera headed back to their Dorm.

Bane and Chaos expressed their thanks and departed in their carriage.

The holocall connected. Holographic figures shimmered into being above the round table in Beelzebub and Zera's study. The Elders' faces looked solemn. Head Nocturne leaned in attentively.

Beelzebub: Thank you all for gathering on such short notice. Zera and I wanted to share a concern from Chaos and Bane regarding their experience in the Elementary Academy.

Zera: Last night, they told their Mammys how stifling and isolating the Academy environment feels, and Morgranna communicated that with all of us. This morning, we spoke with them in detail. Their main point was that the Academy feels isolating, primarily due to the curfew and its subsequent restrictions on social interaction. They made it clear: holocalls aren't enough for a real connection. Seeing Senior Academy students socialising freely at night brought that into sharp relief for them.

Elder Soleil: That's troubling. Are these feelings common among their peers, or unique to Chaos and Bane?

Beelzebub: We suspect it's a broader issue. The structure could well be affecting others, though Chaos and Bane have only recently found words for it. They compared the empty, silent Elementary evenings to the vibrant life at Senior, where creative and social pursuits flourish after dark.

Elder Lucius: The original intent was safety, not isolation. We may have gone too far. Children need freedom as well as discipline.

Head Nocturne: This is serious. If students feel lifeless and repressed, it could hinder their development. Did they propose any solutions?

Zera: Mostly, they told us what they're missing: community, spontaneous interaction, the chance to relax together safely. Holocalls are inadequate compared to real experiences—music, conversation, even late-night sparring.

Elder Kyle: I admit, I hadn't realised how restrictive the curfew may feel. Especially after Awakening, their needs could have changed.

Elder Caine: Agreed. We must allow space for growth, not just ensure security. Should we review evening restrictions?

Beelzebub: That's our recommendation. Let the students know we're listening and actively considering how to make their environment more supportive.

Head Nocturne: Let's proceed thoughtfully. We'll consult staff, gather more student input, and revisit this with concrete proposals. Meanwhile, thank Chaos and Bane for their honesty—and remind all Children their well-being is our priority.

Zera: We'll do that. Thank you for hearing us.

The call ended with nods and a collective resolve to consider changes that would prioritise community and well-being for the students.

Beelzebub and Zera left their Dorm and headed towards the training buildings to catch up with Chaos and Bane's lessons.

Chaos and Bane arrived at the Teaching Building and took a seat in the reception area, sipping coffee as they waited for Teacher Belial to lead them to their Mana training. They didn't have to wait long; Teacher Belial appeared promptly and waved them along to his office.

"Good morning, Chaos, Bane. Before we begin practical Mana training, I want to test how much Tian Dao has helped you master your Mana Knowledge. That way, I'll know where to halt training until you receive and master new Knowledge," he explained as they walked.

When they entered the office, Demon Selene was already waiting. "Good morning. Ready for the test?"

Bane and Chaos greeted her in unison, "Good morning, Demon Selene. I don't think anyone is ever ready for a test."

Selene burst out laughing, collapsing into a chair. "True," she managed between giggles.

Belial ignored her amusement and turned to Chaos. "If you could separate, please, so I can test both of you individually." He gestured for Bane to sit and took his own seat, studying Chaos.

This time, it was Bane who broke into giggles.

Belial simply raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah, Er doesn't like learning or tests, so he doesn't want to separate," Chaos admitted sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Oh? That's unfortunate. It means you'll have to attend at least two weeks of lectures before starting any practical exercises," Belial sighed, shaking his head.

Bane gave him a thumbs-up for his deft handling of Er.

Chaos obliged, splitting into Yi and Er. Er flopped into a chair the moment he materialised.

Yi sneered, "Wow, now you're quick to show up. Usually that's just for combat drills or snacks."

Er shot him a glare. "Are you sure you want to start this now?"

"Uh-oh, here we go again," Bane muttered, facepalming.

Selene arched an eyebrow. "Now, that's the Twin Demons I know."

Bane glanced at her.

"Bickering and fighting among Twin Demons is so common here, our students run betting pools on who will win and how," Selene explained.

Beelzebub and Zera entered at that moment, Chaos mid-bicker, and seconds away from outright wrestling.

"Aw, hell. Not again," Beelzebub said with weary resignation.

"What set them off last time?" Belial asked, seemingly unbothered by the scuffle.

"Arguing over playlists during merged combat training," Zera replied, exasperated.

"Just bickering?" Selene asked, leaning forward.

"Nope, this—" Beelzebub gestured at the wrestling Yi and Er on the floor—"was included."

"Still pretty tame," Selene remarked.

"Huh—excuse me?" Beelzebub spluttered.

Selene shrugged. "We have Twin Demons who fling spells at each other down the corridor, or perform aerial wrestling indoors. This? Quite mild, honestly." She calmly lifted her legs so Yi and Er could tumble past without hitting her.

At that point, Morgranna and Morgana entered. Morgranna surveyed the chaos and gave a sharp tsk. Yi and Er froze in place, then slowly—almost creakily—turned their heads to locate the sound, eyes widening as they spotted Morgranna.

Selene smiled, raising an eyebrow. "Well, that's new. I'm impressed, Morgranna."

"Thank you, Demon Selene," Morgranna replied. "Now, will you two get up and sit in the chairs like civilised people, or do I need to give you a time-out?" Her voice dripped with warning.

Yi and Er instantly shot into their seats before anyone could blink.

"That was fast," Belial said, eyes wide.

"Morgranna holds the key. They don't dare risk a time-out," Bane said with a smirk.

Selene looked at him for clarification.

"Morgranna makes our snacks. A time-out means no Morgranna-made snacks for a day," Bane explained.

"Lethal," Selene gasped.

Yi and Er nodded emphatically.

In the background, muffled snorts came from Beelzebub and Zera, struggling not to laugh.

"So, what brings you here?" Selene asked Morgranna and Morgana.

"Well, someone forgot their snacks before leaving," Morgana replied with a smile, "so we brought them over. But we might just take them back…"

Yi and Er immediately lunged for Morgranna, begging her not to take their snacks away.

The room erupted in laughter.

Yi and Er managed to get Morgranna to hand over their snacks before the Mammys left.
