Chapter 372: When Father and Son Meet
Syrup Village · Kaya's Mansion
The warm sun filtered through the panes of the glass conservatory, bathing the two of them in a soft glow. Kaya's slender fingers traced the faint scars on Usopp's shoulder, her fingertips trembling slightly. Her eyes brimmed with tears, though her voice carried a tone of gentle scolding.
"It's always like this... you always give me so much to worry about that I can hardly sleep."
Usopp scratched the back of his head, letting out a somewhat goofy grin. This time, however, he didn't launch into a grand, tall tale. Instead, he spoke with a rare, solemn gravity.
"Don't worry, Kaya! I'm different now. I've truly become strong! Look—"
With careful movements, he unpinned the service medals from his chest, placing them one by one into Kaya's palm. Those heavy medals were etched with the marks of countless battles, smelling faintly of gunpowder and smoke—silent witnesses to a boy's journey toward becoming a true warrior.
Kaya stared blankly at the medals in her hand. The tears she had been holding back finally spilled over, tracing paths down her cheeks. Yet, she smiled, a radiant expression that bloomed like a spring flower.
"You dummy... coming home safe is what matters most..."
Usopp's nose crinkled, but he gave a firm, determined nod. "Yeah. I promise."
Outside the conservatory, Kaya's parents and Merry were busy hosting Luffy and Nami. When they learned that the seemingly carefree, energetic boy before them was actually a Marine Rear Admiral, the teacups in their hands nearly overturned.
"A Rear Admiral?! At such a young age?! Truly, a hero emerges from the youth!!"
Luffy giggled, his mouth stuffed with delicate pastries. "Hehe~"
Nami spoke with effortless grace, skillfully engaging the hosts in conversation to buy the two in the conservatory more quiet time. After a while, the glass doors slowly creaked open.
Usopp emerged, holding Kaya's hand. His expression was serious, yet tinged with a hint of pride. "Kaya, this is Luffy—my commander and my brother! And this is Nami, the most talented navigator in the entire Marines!"
Kaya gave a small, elegant bow, her voice clear and sincere. "Thank you both for taking such good care of Usopp."
Luffy broke into a wide grin. "Usopp is amazing! He's saved a ton of our comrades!!"
Nami added softly, "It's true. He's our most indispensable sniper now."
A look of profound satisfaction and pride flickered in Usopp's eyes. The old butler, Merry, stepped forward with a smile. "Why don't you all stay for lunch? Let us properly host the heroes of Syrup Village."
The group shared a look and accepted the invitation with smiles.
Meanwhile, at the distant shoreline, a battered small boat rocked amidst the waves as it touched the sand. A man stepped slowly onto the beach, his gaze sweeping across the village in the distance.
The familiar trees, stone paths, and fishing nets looked as if they had been frozen in time for over a decade. Yasopp removed his hat, staring in silence at the scene before him, his gaze heavy with a complex mixture of emotions.
"Finally... I'm actually back."
The wind carried the sounds of laughter and cheers from the village, but he merely pressed his hat down with a bitter expression, his footsteps heavy as he began the walk toward his old, weathered house.
At lunchtime, Merry personally served a feast: grilled fish, fresh garden salad, and steaming bowls of rich stew. The long table was a symphony of enticing aromas. Kaya had even insisted on baking a tray of vanilla cookies herself.
The heat from the oven made her face flush red, and she nearly burned her hand in her haste. Luckily, Nami was quick to act, gently pulling her back and finishing the final steps with a laugh. In the kitchen, the two girls chatted and worked, their laughter ringing like silver bells, filling the air with a sweet, domestic warmth.
In the living room, Kaya's parents sat down for a heart-to-heart with Usopp. When they learned that Usopp was now a Marine Major and had achieved legendary feats under the command of Vice Admiral Roy, the two elders were filled with astonishment and admiration.
"So young and so accomplished! Banchina's spirit in heaven must be so proud of you."
Hearing his mother's name, Usopp stood up and gave a solemn bow, his eyes burning with sincerity. "If it weren't for the care you and the villagers showed us when I was small, my mother and I never would have made it through those hard times... I will always remember your kindness."
The parents shared a smile, the final trace of hesitation in their hearts vanishing. He's a good boy who knows the value of gratitude.
At the table, Luffy continued his relentless assault on the food. "SO GOOD!!"
Kaya couldn't help but giggle, while Nami secretly stepped on Luffy's foot under the table, whispering a sharp reminder: "Mind your manners, Luffy!"
"Mmph?! Okay, okay!" Luffy answered through a mouthful, sending the table into a roar of laughter.
After the meal, the dappled sunlight fell across the room while the birds sang outside. Usopp looked at the familiar village scenery, a wave of nostalgia hitting him. "I think... I'd like to go back to my old house and see it. Maybe do some cleaning."
Kaya set down her teacup and gave a gentle smile. "Actually... ever since you joined the Marines, I've had someone go there regularly to clean. It's still quite pristine."
Usopp froze, his nose stinging with emotion as a warm current surged through his chest. He took a deep breath, turned, and reached out his hand. "Then... would you like to come with me?"
Kaya's cheeks turned a soft pink. "Yes..."
Nami and Luffy stood up to follow, and the four of them stepped out of the mansion gates. Along the path, wildflowers swayed in the breeze, releasing a faint fragrance. The sun hung low, stretching their shadows across the countryside.
Usopp and Kaya walked side-by-side, their pace slow, yet it felt as if time had never changed them. Usopp enthusiastically described the world beyond the sea: the bizarre islands of the Grand Line, the endless sands and dancing oases of Alabasta, the colorful bubbles of Sabaody, and the shimmering coral forests beneath the sea at Fishman Island.
This time, they weren't the wild fantasies of a bored boy, but the lived adventures of a man. Kaya listened with a quiet smile, her eyes sparkling. She knew the boy before her had truly grown into a brave warrior of the sea.
The atmosphere was light and warm, the sounds of laughter drifting on the wind.
However, as they drew closer to Usopp's old house, the vibe shifted instantly.
Usopp and Luffy both stiffened at the same time, a sharp, lethal red light flickering briefly in their eyes—Observation Haki. Their smiles vanished, replaced by cold, alert expressions as they locked onto the dilapidated old house ahead.
"...!!!" Usopp instinctively reached out, shielding Kaya behind him.
Nami sensed the shift immediately, pulling Kaya back as a faint mist began to coil around her. The power of the Kumo Kumo no Mi was ready to erupt at a moment's notice.
The wooden door of the small house was slightly ajar, as if it had been waiting for them. The weathered planks creaked as a figure stepped slowly out from the shadows. The man was lean but stood with a straight back, his beard a mess, draped in a distinctive Star-patterned cape.
His gaze was heavy and complex—a mixture of deep guilt and irrepressible excitement. When he lifted his head and his eyes met Usopp's, his voice was raspy, carrying the weight of decades of absence.
"Usopp..."
The air solidified. Usopp's pupils shrank to pinpricks, his throat tightening as his footsteps came to an involuntary halt.
Father and son—having not seen each other for over ten years—finally met on the soil of their homeland.
