Chapter 371: A Promise of Mutual Reunion
East Blue · Syrup Village
The sun was high, and a gentle sea breeze drifted through the air.
The small boat carrying Luffy, Nami, and Usopp slowly drifted toward the shores of the Gecko Archipelago. Looking at the familiar sandy beach, the lush green woods, and the scattered houses, Usopp's footsteps faltered for a moment.
He stared at the coastline, his expression dazed. For a heartbeat, he felt as if he had traveled back in time to his younger days—the boy who spent every day shouting "The pirates are coming!" and telling tall tales. The breeze carried the scent of home—damp earth and fresh grass—striking the softest corner of his heart.
Nami patted him gently on the back, a smile playing on her lips. "What's wrong? Why are you standing there like a statue now that we're home?"
Usopp snapped out of it, scratching his head with a sheepish grin. "It's nothing... it just feels a bit strange. It's been so long since I was last here."
Luffy, hauling a massive pack over his shoulder, looked back and grinned. His smile was as bright as the sunlight. "I feel the same way every time I go back to Dawn Island and see Grandma Irene!"
The trio began their walk along the familiar path toward the village. Luffy and Usopp were both carrying gargantuan military rucksacks, their Marine uniforms gleaming under the afternoon sun.
The Hero's Welcome
As they stepped into the village entrance, an old fisherman drying his nets looked up. His eyes locked onto the unmistakable silhouette of a long nose, and his jaw dropped.
"That... that long nose?! Is that you, Usopp?!"
The shout was like a pebble dropped into a still lake, sending ripples throughout the entire community. In no time, villagers poured out from every direction. People ran from their houses, dropped their hoes in the fields, and abandoned their fish baskets just to swarm the trio.
"Whoa! It really is Usopp! You're finally back!"
"You're a Marine now! We saw the news in the papers! You've done us proud, kid!"
An elderly, silver-haired woman reached out with trembling, wrinkled hands, clutching Usopp's hand as tears shimmered in her eyes. "If only Banchina were here to see this... she would be so proud of you..."
In that moment, a whirlwind of emotions surged through Usopp. Looking at these neighbors who had watched him grow up—who had laughed off his lies with kindness and secretly brought him food when his mother was ill—his eyes turned red. He stood as tall as he could.
Under the gaze of the entire village, he snapped into a perfect Marine salute. His voice was steady and loud:
"Everyone! I'm back—as a soldier of the Marines!"
The village entrance erupted in a roar of cheers. Children jumped up to touch the medals on his chest, elders wiped away tears of joy, and the fishermen laughed while slapping him on the back. Nami and Luffy stood to the side, sharing a smile as they stepped back to give him the stage.
Gifts from the Grand Line
Usopp grinned and unbuckled his massive rucksack. As the heavy fabric fell open, the villagers saw it was stuffed to the brim with exotic specialties and delicate treats:
Bubble Candy from the Sabaody Archipelago.
Desert Dates from Alabasta.
Special Sea Salt Crackers from Fishman Island.
"Come and try some, everyone!" Nami and Luffy helped distribute the snacks.
The children scurried around with their candy, blowing bubbles larger than their heads. The elders took careful bites of the dates, marveling at the sweetness. "Is this what the outer seas taste like? It's wonderful!"
The air in Syrup Village was filled with festive laughter. Suddenly, a commotion broke out in the crowd: "Make way! Move it! Usopp is our boss!"
Three young boys fought their way through the throng—Carrot, Pepper, and Onion. The years had stripped away some of their childishness, and they had grown significantly taller, but the way they looked at Usopp with pure admiration hadn't changed at all.
They surrounded him, staring at his sturdy physique, his crisp uniform, and the gleaming service medals. Their eyes turned into literal stars.
"Captain Usopp!!! You look so cool!"
"The Marine uniform is way cooler than a pirate cape!"
"The Usopp Self-Defense Force will follow the Captain forever!"
They danced around him like excited puppies. Ever since Usopp had chosen to join the Marines, the three of them had stopped talking about "pirates" entirely. They had rebranded themselves as the "Usopp Self-Defense Force," patrolling the village, helping with farm work, and even catching the occasional petty thief. They had become the "Teenage Guardians" of Syrup Village.
Usopp felt a lump in his throat but forced himself to keep his chin up. He patted their shoulders gently. "Good job... keep protecting the village. You're real warriors too!"
The three of them nearly burst into tears on the spot. Nami and Luffy knew that in this moment, Usopp had finally turned his childhood boasts into reality.
The White Mansion on the Hill
After the initial excitement, the villagers' gazes turned toward the white mansion sitting on the hill. They shared knowing, warm smiles. Someone even pressed a small bouquet of wildflowers into Usopp's hand, giving him a playful nudge. "Go on, then. Miss Kaya... she's been waiting for you."
Usopp's face turned bright red as he scratched his nose. Amidst the good-natured laughter of the villagers, he straightened his uniform, took a deep breath, and set off toward the mansion.
Behind him were the cheers and blessings of the entire village.
Ahead of him was the person who had never stopped waiting.
Syrup Village · The White Mansion
Afternoon sunlight filtered through the sheer white curtains, spilling across a wooden desk. Kaya sat there, her slender fingers clumsily wrapping a bandage around a training dummy, beads of sweat on her forehead.
Her movements were still a bit awkward, but they were filled with a quiet, stubborn resilience. Her frail health often left her short of breath, but ever since she had seen photos of Usopp fighting in the New World, she had made up her mind—even if she couldn't fight by his side, she would become the person who could heal his wounds when he returned.
The medical books on her desk were dog-eared from constant study, surrounded by herbal jars and practice dummies. Merry stood by the door, watching her in silence. There was worry in his eyes, but even more pride. Kaya's parents stood nearby, nodding to each other. Though they hated to see their daughter overworking herself, they understood: for the first time, she was giving her all for someone she loved.
Suddenly, Merry and the elders seemed to hear something. With a silent understanding, they quietly slipped out of the room.
Kaya remained, focused on her studies. Suddenly, as if sensing a presence, her movements stalled. She instinctively looked back toward the doorway.
There, silhouetted against the golden afternoon sun, stood a tall, familiar figure. His crisp Marine uniform gleamed in the light. In his hand, he held a somewhat messy but heartfelt bouquet of wildflowers.
Kaya froze for a heartbeat. Then, her eyes curved into a smile so tender it felt as if it could melt the world.
"You're home."
A smile broke across Usopp's face. His nose crinkled as he fought back tears, his voice loud and certain:
"Yeah... I'm home."
