Chapter 2 - The Voice

Azrael's instincts and the voice in his head, screamed at him to run, but his legs refused his command.

He was completely frozen in place.

Without waiting for the students to process what they were seeing, the dog attacked and that's when chaos broke out.

Azrael still found his feet glued to the floor but he soon felt someone yank the collar of his uniform.

"Move," the person commanded as they pulled him out of the classroom and he finally gained control of his legs.

Behind him, he could hear the screams of the students who couldn't make it out in time but he didn't dare stop or turn back.

The hallway was filled with even more chaos as students tried forcing their way out of the classrooms.

Azrael stumbled, nearly tripping over a fallen backpack. The one who'd pulled him out, a tall girl with short dark hair and a torn sleeve, grabbed his arm again.

"Don't just stand there!" she shouted. "Run!"

He didn't argue as they just kept moving forward but their sprint was cut short when another mutated dog burst through the classroom doorway right ahead of them, dragging what was left of another student in its jaws.

They couldn't turn back either, since the mutated dog that entered Azrael's classroom had also stepped into the hallway, also finished with its meal.

They were now stuck in the middle of the two.

"W-we're going to die," the girl that had pulled Azrael out of the class earlier whispered as she gripped his arm tighter.

Down!

The voice came again, and the moment they did, he pulled the girl towards the floor with him.

A moment later, a glowing object that produced heat flew past his head and immediately ignored one of the dogs, before it exploded into ash.

Slowly turning around, Azrael noticed a fat kid with round glasses, holding his hand outwards, smoke rising from it.

It was obvious enough that he was the one responsible for the flames that just engulfed the dog.

"Holy, shit it actually worked." The fat kid muttered in surprise, almost as if he didn't expect what just happened.

He didn't stand around to think about it as he immediately turned towards the second dog which was now wary after seeing the attack burn the previous dog to ash.

But it didn't get the chance to run before a second fireball came, crashing into it, and just as with the first, the mutated dog went up in flames before exploding to Ash.

"H-how did you do that?" One of the students asked, the fat kid opened his mouth to explain, but before he could, a voice cut him off.

The voice seemed to come from everywhere at once, and with it, the sound of chaos all around immediately muted.

The alarm that had been ringing in the hallway, the sound of the clash between the angels and demons, all of it seemed to have gone silent.

Almost as if everything has been out on pause.

Azrael listened to the voice with his heat beating quickly. The girl beside him gripped his sleeve, trembling. "W-what was that…?"

The fat kid with the glasses looked around wildly. "You heard that too, right? That wasn't just me?"

The voice came again and as if a spell was cast, all the students, including Azrael felt themselves calm down.

Well, that much was obvious, after all, Angels and demons wouldn't just rain down from heaven on a regular day.

the voice continued

Still there was no reaction, but only because of whatever spell had been cast on them, it not, the hallway would have been full of chaos as the students panicked.

The voice added.

The moment the voice completed its words, holographic screens of different colors popped up in front of each student.

[System has been activated.]

Each screen has the same text on it, well all except the fat kid's screen, since he had awakened his system a lot earlier than the rest.

With that, the sound of chaos returned and the sound of the alarm. The students finally gained control of their emotions again, some crashed to their knees.

The voice had genuinely been terrifying and they had only remained standing because of the effect of whatever that voice had done to them.

"Everyone, listen to me!" The voice of the fat kid was heard and all eyes turned to him causing him to hesitate but he gathered his courage and continued.

"We need to move to somewhere safer! Standing here's gonna get us all killed!"

He was right.

They were currently standing in an hallway with the corpses of the mutated dogs which definitely would pull more towards this area.

"My name's Elliot!" he continued. "If you've got a system, check what it does, quick! We can't fight those things and get to safety if we don't know what we can do!"

And like sheep to a shepherd, they flocked towards him. Elliot had proven that he was undoubtedly strong and he seemed to be the only one that understood what this 'System' was.

So it sounded completely reasonable that he would act as a temporary leader.

"Um— I-It says that I c-can heal." A petite girl who also had round glasses on, hesitantly said.

"Good, then you'll heal anyone who's hurt, while we head to the gym."

With that, everyone started revealing what their system was about, some could create shields, while others were granted some so mundanely ordinary, that were better off without a system.

And that's exactly when segregation started. Elliot refused to take in anyone that he described as liability, and no one could argue with his logic.

In a way he was right, as bringing the weak with them would only feel like they were carrying a baggage.

"And you," they all turned towards Azrael, "What does your system do?"
