Chapter 3: Young Ambition
Flying brooms, the most common mode of transport for the supernaturals in this world, hold a status similar to bicycles and electric scooters in Dorothy's previous life; virtually everyone owns one.
They are cheap, easy to use, save money, and have a low learning curve, requiring only a little magic combined with a simple flying spell to take off instantly.
Flying spells, being low-level magic, are taught in elementary school at the wizard academies in this world, making them one of the most common introductory enlightenment spells for wizards.
Although Dorothy hadn't met the admission standards for Witch Academyall these years, she had long since graduated from a regular wizard academy, and as an outstanding graduate, a top-tier scholar who received scholarships until her hands went soft, she naturally knew such basic spells.
She sat astride the broomstick in the most standard riding posture, her two long and shapely legs tightly gripping the wooden pole, and her hands firmly holding on to maintain balance, before finally releasing a faint wisp of magic from her hand, channeling it into the flying spell array inside the broom.
"Whoosh…"
As she chanted her exclusive takeoff command, the broom, which had been loose beneath her, suddenly surged with power, and her feet, previously on the ground, lifted slightly.
The young girl was now airborne.
Since ancient times, humanity's yearning for the sky has never ceased. In her previous world, people tried every conceivable method to conquer the sky, but it always remained distant for ordinary people; even with the widespread use of airplanes, many still never rode one in their entire lives.
However, now, in this world, people can easily conquer the sky and soar freely simply by relying on their own power.
No matter how many times she had flown, Dorothy's heart always retained that sense of wonder. She smiled, slowly urging the broom beneath her to move forward.
It's just that she wasn't the type who enjoyed speeding. Being gentle by nature, she always did things slowly, even flying. Her flying speed was even slower than the old woman who had just passed by, so much so that a blur shot past her.
"Sister, you're so slow!"
Alice, who had taken off like a rocket, felt even more exasperated watching her sister leisurely flying at the standard speed limit, like a middle-aged man. Her sister was only sixteen, in the prime of her youth, yet she often felt as if a middle-aged man lived inside her sister.
Oh, oh, oh, Sister even pulled out her thermos with goji berry tea! That's even more like a middle-aged man! And isn't that a health practice favored by those immortals from the East? Sister, why are you, a Demoness, so skilled at it?
"Unregulated flying leads to tears for your family, little sister. You're the one who should slow down. My toddler-level broom can't fly fast; this is already its top speed."
Once the flying spell was activated, invisible magic would firmly bind the rider and broom together, so there was no need to desperately grip the broomstick anymore. Dorothy calmly pulled out her beloved thermos from her satchel, took a small sip of hot tea, and a blissful expression appeared on her face.
She glanced at her younger sister ahead. Alice was currently sitting diagonally on her latest model, the Wing 6000 Terminator collaboration broom. While this sitting posture didn't conform to broom flight regulations, it was the most common posture for female mages and even Demonesses, as girls always loved to wear various beautiful dresses. There weren't many country bumpkins like her who wore pants every day.
"It's you who needs a new broom, Sister. Let's buy one together later today. This broom of yours must be a children's model you bought when you were little, right? It's been so many years, I can't believe you've put up with it and haven't changed it, and how your Demoness-level magic hasn't exploded it."
Alice, ahead, rolled her eyes.
"I don't go out often, this one is good enough, alright? But it really is time for a new one."
Dorothy gently caressed her old companion, which had been with her for so many years, feeling a slight reluctance in her heart.
However, as her sister said, this children's beginner broom was indeed a bit insufficient now. Starting tomorrow, if she went to Witch Academy, she would have to go out frequently, and a good flying broom was a necessity.
Moreover, this old companion was indeed too fragile and somewhat unable to withstand her current Demoness-level magic. It was like how a child's plastic toy sword could easily break if an adult swung it hard. Fortunately, she had a tiny bit of talent in the precision of magic control, otherwise this old companion would have been broken by her long ago.
"Then, Alice, help me choose one later. I don't really know which brands of brooms are good now."
Dorothy nodded, saying so.
"Okay, Sister! I'll help you pick the latest model later, guaranteed to be fast and stable!"
Alice nodded excitedly. It was evident from the latest high-end broom beneath her that she had a lot of research on the subject. She was a frequent participant in broom racing. Now that her antique sister was finally preparing to replace that old broom, she began to ponder how to recommend and promote the thrilling broom racing activity to her sister.
"Yes, yes, yes, but just don't get one too expensive. We have a limited budget; we can't afford your professional racing-grade ones."
Knowing her sister's nature, Dorothy immediately saw through her intentions.
The two sisters chatted as they flew towards the massive floating city in the distance.
Demonesses, as the ruling race of this world and a naturally noble class, naturally have unique living areas and conditions; they generally live in the sky.
Sky islands are the most common residential structures for Demonesses. These floating islands made of levitation stones were rare in the distant past, but ever since Demonesses figured out the secrets of levitation stones and could synthesize them artificially, these former treasures are now commonplace, becoming very common building materials in this world. Not only do Demonesses love to use them, but some wealthier Alien Spellcaster also love to use them.
After all, the trends of the ruling Demonesses are the fashion for the other races in this world.
The home Dorothy currently lived in was a typical Demoness sky island building. It was the wedding house her rich and beautiful Demoness stepmother had purchased to marry her pretty-boy father.
It's a standard small sky island with an internal space expansion structure. On the outside, it looks like a small sky island covering less than a thousand meters, but its internal space is actually about as large as a giant human estate on the ground. In addition to the living space for the family, there are also planting areas, breeding areas, experimental areas, and a series of other functional divisions. These are all essential configurations for Demoness families in this era.
Every sky island is essentially a high-end version of other races' spellcaster towers; besides being a tiny bit expensive, there are no other problems.
"Tsk, I didn't expect to still be a house slave even in another world. So tiring."
According to the tradition of Demoness families, Little Demonessesgenerally leave their parents' home after coming of age to establish their own. Dorothy is already 16 this year, and her birthday is only a few days away. According to regulations, after her birthday coming-of-age ceremony, she will have to move out of the house and make her own way. Purchasing her own sky island will be a must, and just thinking about the exorbitant price of a sky island, Dorothy felt exhausted.
Fortunately, she still needed to attend Witch Academy in the future, so she could at least stay in the school dormitory for twenty years. This period could be used to buffer the pressure, save more money, and strive to buy a house upon graduation, becoming a winner in life.
Moreover, with the monthly allowance from her stepmother over the years, plus the scholarships she received from the wizard school, Dorothy actually had a small fortune. Among her peers, she was considered a small rich woman, it's just that she was still a tiny bit short of the ultimate goal of buying a house, like the distance to a fingertip universe.
"Tsk, whenever this happens, I somewhat envy my cheap old man. Relying on looks to make a living truly allows one to do whatever they want."
Thinking of her human father, who specialized in marrying rich women, Dorothy couldn't help but feel a surge of respect.
However, now she was her own girlfriend. As a pure love war goddess, she absolutely could not tolerate Minotaur-like situations happening to her, even if the object was a fellow Demoness.
"Hmm, not easily. I'm not that kind of casual person. I won't be a gold digger. I want to reach the pinnacle of life through my own hard work and effort. I won't rely on rich women or be a kept man."
Dorothy silently made up her mind. To solidify this belief, she turned her gaze to the increasingly close giant sky island ahead.
"A successful Demoness should be like this. One day, I will establish my own Demoness coven and build a sky island city even more magnificent than this."
The young half-Demoness made a vow in her heart at this moment.
A Great Witch should be like this. One day, I can take her place.
"Sister, what are you spacing out for? Hurry up! If you keep dawdling, we won't make it back for dinner!"
Alice's shouts from ahead interrupted Dorothy's grand ambitions.
"Coming, coming! I really am going at top speed already!"
The young half-Demoness sighed, trying her best to urge her old companion beneath her to accelerate and catch up.
