Chapter 35 - 35. A shitty Complicated Situation

Matt

This is the best milanesa sandwich ever. The egg is runny, the cheese well melted, the mila crispy and soft at the same time, a lot of veggies and the bread slightly toasty, he put a lot of work and thought into it... Sigh...

I thought he was done with me. I thought I really screwed it up for good. But he brought me lunch. He cares... I'm not a teen boy falling for a gentle gesture, but damn, I can't help it but feel hope.

Curls and Jay are whisper arguing about some book. When Curls just run away.

He didn't even looked at me...

Well... I can't expect to have it easy, we are in a shitty complicated situation, but I have hope now... Hope and milanesa, what else can a guy ask for!

Jay keeps loading my truck. He was appalled when he found out I never named it, so he christened her Big Bertha, I think it's a reference to something, I should ask later, right now all I want to know is why did Curls run away.

But Jay is pretending like nothing happened.

It's not my place to ask...

It's not my place to meddle...

I can't keep poking my nose into everybody's business, that always ends blowing up in my stupid face!

But I can't help it, I am a man of weak resolve and strong impulses... In other words I am a busybody who can't keep his stupid mouth shut.

So of course I ask him.

"Don't worry about it" he can't even look at me when he says that "not our business, not our..." he stops and stays quiet without moving for a few seconds and turns around "unless it is of your business," he squints looking at me, like trying to read me "did something hap... Fuck it, nevermind, don't wanna know..."

He keeps loading the truck while I eat the second sandwich. He takes a few very audible deep breaths and turns around "are you sure you want to get involved in all of that?" He hands gesture towards the town, towards where Curls just ran off to "you guys just met, and we don't know if they'll get a divorce or not" he takes another deep breath "and this is a fucking small town... Are you sure you can handle all that fucking drama??"

"I think he's worth it" I really do.

He shrugs "ok, if you later want to come crying... Our door is open"

"Are you guys going to stay here that long?" I really like them, it would be great if they move to town.

"Nope, but somehow I don't think it's going to take that long for shit to explode" oh shit, I guess it's true. I have no idea what I'm getting myself into, I never do... I should have learned by now... I guess I'll just have to give him time, if I push too much... I won't. I'll follow his lead, his times his choices.

We did a couple of trips to the junkyard, the sun is going down and Jay is visible worried about Fel not coming back, he went to brunch or something, but that would have ended like seven hours ago. He called a few times but it goes straight to voicemail.

Jay even called Jee, asking him to trace Fel's cellphone, turns out that's not something the cops can do just like that, who knew?! What else have movies been lying about??

We go to CC's place to return their truck. The two of them start going through all possible worst case scenarios, from he laying in a ditch to him being at a hospital with amnesia. They are not kidding, those are serious suggestions. When I say that maybe his cell is out of charge, they both look at me like I'm an idiot. So I let them get crazier, trying really hard not to laugh.

When I finally managed to extricate him from their spiral of doom, I drive him home, but his car, Jessica, it's still not here, so I take him to my place, I seat him on Curls recliner, and give him a beer.

In an awkward silence he doesn't take his eyes from the road, in case he misses his car go by. It's really sweet the way he cares about Fel. Somehow it makes me think of Curls... Would we ever get to that point???

He kinda snaps out of it "I forgot to ask you... What happened with those catfishing assholes??"
