The forest didn't feel empty anymore.
Kael stayed still, one hand half-raised, eyes scanning the trees. The air had shifted. It wasn't loud or obvious. It was the kind of quiet that pressed down on the skin, like something was holding its breath.
Seraphine felt it too.
She adjusted her grip on her blade, not drawing it fully yet. Her eyes followed Kael's movements. He wasn't panicking. That worried her more than if he was.
The Hero took a slow step forward. "If he's watching, we can't just stand here."
Kael didn't look at him. "That's exactly what we do."
The Hero frowned. "You said we make him come to us."
"Yes," Kael replied. "By not reacting."
Another sound came from the trees. This one closer.
Seraphine whispered, "He's testing us."
Kael nodded once.
Minutes passed. Long ones. The forest felt like it was leaning inward, branches casting uneven shadows that moved even when the wind didn't.
Then a voice cut through the silence.
"You've changed."
It came from everywhere and nowhere at once.
The Hero raised his sword instantly. Seraphine stepped forward. Kael didn't move at all.
"I was wondering how long it would take," Kael said calmly.
A figure stepped out from behind a thick tree trunk. Tall. Lean. Wrapped in dark travel gear marked with faint silver lines that glowed and faded like breathing light.
His face was visible now.
He was smiling.
"Still pretending you're not part of us?" the man asked.
Seraphine's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?"
The man ignored her and looked only at Kael. "He brought guards now? And a champion?"
The Hero bristled. "Watch your tone."
The man finally glanced at him. His smile widened. "Ah. The Hero."
That alone sent a chill through the group.
"You know who I am?" the Hero asked.
"Of course," the man said casually. "Everyone does."
Kael's voice hardened. "You shouldn't be here."
"And yet," the man replied, spreading his hands, "here I am."
Seraphine stepped closer to Kael without thinking. "Is he one of them?"
Kael didn't answer right away.
"Yes," the man said for him. "I am."
The Hero tightened his grip. "One of who?"
"The ones Kael refuses to talk about."
That did it.
Seraphine turned sharply toward Kael. "You said this wasn't urgent."
Kael finally reacted. His jaw tightened. "I said it wasn't time."
The man laughed softly. "Still controlling the story."
Kael's eyes flashed. "Leave."
"Oh, I will," the man replied. "But not before delivering the message."
He raised one hand. The silver lines on his clothing flared brighter.
The air around them shifted.
Seraphine felt pressure against her chest. The Hero took a step back without meaning to. Even Kael tensed.
"The clans are moving," the man said. "Borders will fall. Old oaths will break."
Kael's voice dropped dangerously low. "You don't speak for them."
"No," the man agreed. "But I speak for him."
That made Kael's expression change.
Just slightly.
But Seraphine noticed.
"Who?" she asked.
The man smiled again. "You already know."
Before anyone could respond, the forest exploded into motion.
Blades of light snapped into existence around the man, spinning fast. The Hero raised his sword just as one slammed toward him. Metal clashed with magic, sparks flying.
Seraphine drew her blade and moved instantly, blocking another strike. The force rattled her arm.
Kael stepped forward, hands lifting as dark symbols burned briefly along his wrists.
The man laughed. "There you are."
Kael clenched his fist.
The ground beneath the attacker cracked slightly, roots twisting upward. The man leaped back, barely avoiding them.
"So you didn't forget," he said. "Good."
The Hero charged, sword flashing. This time, he landed a hit — slicing across the man's shoulder.
Blood darkened the fabric.
The man looked down, surprised. Then amused. "Impressive."
Seraphine didn't hesitate. She attacked from the side, fast and precise. The man blocked, but she forced him back.
For a moment, they had him.
Then the silver lines flared again.
A shockwave burst outward.
Seraphine was thrown back, hitting the ground hard. The Hero stumbled but stayed upright.
Kael moved instantly, grabbing Seraphine's arm and pulling her up before the man could follow through.
"Are you hurt?" Kael asked.
She shook her head, breath short. "I'm fine."
Their eyes met for a second too long.
The Hero shouted, "Kael!"
Kael turned just in time to deflect another magical strike, the impact echoing through the forest.
The man landed lightly on a rock, breathing harder now. "Enough."
He raised both hands. The magic faded.
"You've grown stronger," he admitted. "All of you."
The Hero didn't lower his sword. "You're not leaving."
"Oh, I am," the man said. "This was only a warning."
He looked directly at Kael. "He's watching you. Waiting."
Kael didn't respond.
The man stepped backward, the forest shadows closing around him. "Tell Seraphine the truth before it costs her."
That made her freeze.
"What truth?" she demanded.
But the man was already gone.
The forest fell silent again.
They didn't speak for a long time.
Seraphine finally broke it. "He knew my name."
The Hero exhaled sharply. "And he knew too much."
Kael stood apart from them, staring at the place where the man vanished.
"You've been lying," the Hero said quietly.
Kael turned. "I've been protecting you."
"From what?" Seraphine asked.
Kael looked at her. Really looked at her.
"From the war that's coming."
Seraphine crossed her arms. "Then stop deciding for us."
Kael's tone sharpened. "You don't understand what you're stepping into."
"Then explain it," she shot back.
The Hero stepped between them slightly. "This can't continue."
Kael laughed once, bitter. "Now you see it?"
Seraphine took a step closer to Kael, anger and concern mixing in her expression. "You don't get to shut me out."
"I do," Kael snapped. "If it keeps you alive."
That hit harder than he meant it to.
Seraphine's eyes darkened. "You don't get to decide that."
The tension between them tightened, sharp and raw.
The Hero watched, uneasy. Something dangerous was forming here — not just enemies, but cracks between them.
Kael turned away. "We move camp. Now."
Seraphine didn't follow immediately.
She watched him walk ahead, jaw clenched.
"Kael," she said.
He stopped but didn't turn.
"This isn't over."
He replied quietly, "I know."
That night, the fire burned low.
No one slept well.
And somewhere beyond the trees, something ancient shifted — aware now that Kael had finally been found.
