Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22 — Lines That Don’t Stay Straight

 Morning came slow.

The sky was pale and gray, clouds stretched thin across it like something had tried to tear them apart and failed. The ground was damp from light rain during the night. Everything smelled clean, which felt wrong after blood and magic and fear.

They moved early.

No one wanted to stay near that cave.

The Hero walked ahead again, quiet, focused, not looking back much. Seraphine followed a few steps behind him. Kael stayed at the rear, scanning the land like he always did.

The distance between them was small.

The space between them felt big.

After an hour of walking, Seraphine slowed and drifted back toward Kael.

"You okay?" she asked.

He nodded. "Yeah."

She studied him. "You sure?"

He met her eyes. "I've had worse."

She snorted softly. "That's not comforting."

He almost smiled.

Almost.

They walked in silence a bit longer.

Then Seraphine said, "You don't get to decide alone anymore."

He glanced at her. "That's not a rule."

"It is now," she said.

He exhaled. "You don't know what you're asking."

"I know exactly what I'm asking," she replied. "To not be shut out."

Kael hesitated. "That's harder than you think."

She shrugged. "Try anyway."

He didn't answer.

But he didn't argue either.

That felt like progress.

They reached a ridge by midday.

Below them lay a valley full of old farmland. Abandoned fields, broken fences, a few empty homes half-swallowed by time.

The Hero stopped. "People used to live here."

Seraphine looked down. "Where did they go?"

Kael answered quietly. "They left when the clans started moving again."

The Hero turned sharply. "You know this already?"

Kael nodded. "It's part of how they expand. They don't conquer first. They scare."

Seraphine frowned. "That's worse."

Kael nodded. "Yes."

They moved down into the valley.

Something felt off.

No birds.

No wind.

The Hero slowed. "This place is wrong."

Kael raised a hand. "Wait."

They froze.

Then they heard it.

Footsteps.

Lots of them.

From inside the empty houses.

From behind broken walls.

From the fields.

They were surrounded.

"Great," Seraphine muttered.

Figures stepped out.

Not soldiers this time.

Villagers.

Men. Women. Some young. Some old.

Their eyes were wrong.

Not glowing.

Not empty.

Just… distant.

The Hero whispered, "They're controlled."

Kael nodded. "Bound."

Seraphine's jaw tightened. "So what, we fight them?"

"No," Kael said. "We can't."

One of the villagers stepped forward.

"Leave," he said flatly.

The Hero raised his sword slightly. "We don't want trouble."

The villager repeated, "Leave."

More stepped forward.

Seraphine whispered, "This is a trap."

Kael nodded. "A slow one."

The villagers raised their hands.

Magic flared.

Not violent.

Restraining.

The ground hardened around their feet.

The Hero strained. "I can't move."

Kael clenched his fists. "They're anchoring us."

Seraphine fought it. "Then break it."

Kael closed his eyes.

The symbols burned along his arms again, brighter this time.

The ground cracked.

The binding spell shattered.

The villagers cried out in pain, falling back.

Kael staggered slightly.

Seraphine caught his arm. "That took something out of you."

He nodded. "Yeah."

The villagers retreated slowly, confusion returning to their faces.

They looked lost.

The Hero whispered, "They don't even know what they're doing."

Kael nodded. "That's the point."

They moved quickly away from the village.

No one followed.

But none of them felt like they'd won anything.

By evening, they reached the edge of a wide stone bridge crossing a deep ravine. The river far below was loud, angry, fast.

The bridge was old.

Cracked.

Narrow.

"We go one at a time," the Hero said.

Seraphine nodded. "I'll go second."

Kael stayed back. "I'll take the rear."

The Hero crossed first.

Halfway across, something moved beneath the bridge.

The Hero froze. "There's something under me."

The stone cracked.

Seraphine shouted, "Move!"

The Hero ran.

The bridge shook violently.

A massive shape surged upward, smashing into the underside of the bridge.

Stone exploded.

The Hero barely made it to the other side.

Seraphine ran next, the bridge swaying wildly beneath her.

She reached the middle.

The creature struck again.

The bridge snapped.

Seraphine screamed as the stone dropped.

Kael moved.

He ran faster than he ever had.

He jumped.

He caught her arm.

The force nearly pulled him off too.

The Hero grabbed Kael's other arm.

Together they hauled her up.

The bridge collapsed behind them, crashing into the ravine.

They stood there, shaking, breathless.

Seraphine laughed suddenly. Not happy. Not scared. Just relief.

"That was awful," she said.

Kael nodded. "Yeah."

The Hero exhaled. "We're not going back that way."

They sat for a moment, catching their breath.

Seraphine leaned back on her hands. "You saved me again."

Kael shrugged. "Seems to be a habit."

She looked at him. "You're allowed to be glad about it."

He met her eyes. "I am."

She smiled faintly.

Not fire.

Not sparks.

Just something steady.
