The plaza in front of the LexCorp building was packed with entrepreneurs, reporters, and onlookers, all waiting for a major announcement from Lex Luthor, the young prodigy of the business world.
Lois stood among the crowd with Jimmy, both watching the stage with anticipation.
"Lois, can I ask you a favor?" Jimmy said, shifting nervously beside her.
"What is it?" she replied, eyes still scanning the scene.
"It's about Chloe."
The moment he said Chloe's name, Lois turned to him with a sharp look. "If you're trying to use me to get closer to Chloe, forget it. That's not happening."
Jimmy's shoulders dropped. "Why not?"
He had been trying to get Chloe's attention for a while, but she always brushed him off. Asking Lois had seemed like a smart workaround. Clearly, he had miscalculated.
"Because Chloe doesn't like you," Lois said bluntly.
Her words landed hard.
"She's completely hung up on a pair of unreliable brothers. Compared to them, you don't stand a chance."
Jimmy looked like he had just been punched in the gut, but before Lois could continue, movement on stage caught her attention.
Lex Luthor stepped forward.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Lex began, his voice smooth and commanding, "just a few months ago, the world experienced events that changed everything. Since that day, life as we knew it has shifted. Some are working to prevent such disasters, others are fighting for truth and peace."
The crowd fell silent, drawn in by his presence.
"As a member of this nation, I refuse to stand by and do nothing. I am part of this world, just like you. That is why I am dedicating my efforts to developing something that can change our future."
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle.
"I will not be a bystander."
A faint smile crossed his face. "A friend reminded me that I have yet to share my true purpose. So today, I intend to do exactly that."
Just as he was about to continue, a deafening explosion echoed across the sky.
Boom.
Everyone froze.
A massive crack appeared high above, splitting the sky itself. It spread rapidly, stretching outward until it formed a rectangular opening, like a doorway into something vast and unknown.
Darkness churned on the other side.
It looked wrong, unnatural, like something that did not belong in this world.
Lois reacted instantly. She raised her camera and began snapping photos, instincts taking over. No matter the danger, a story like this could not be missed.
Then the first creature came through.
And then hundreds.
Black-winged monsters with glowing red eyes poured out of the opening, their screeches cutting through the air. They moved like a swarm, fast and relentless, diving straight toward the crowd.
Panic erupted.
People screamed and ran in every direction, but it was useless. The creatures were too fast.
They snatched people into the air with terrifying ease.
The screams didn't last long.
Blood rained down as the monsters tore into their victims midair. Bodies fell apart before they even hit the ground. The once lively plaza turned into a slaughterhouse within seconds.
Lois lowered her camera and grabbed Jimmy. "Move!"
They ran, dodging the chaos as best they could, eventually diving behind a large statue for cover.
Jimmy was shaking, his clothes splattered with blood. "What the hell are those things?"
"I don't know," Lois said, breathing hard, "but they're definitely not from Earth."
She peeked around the statue, scanning for an escape. Her eyes landed on a motorcycle about ten meters away.
Jimmy followed her gaze and immediately panicked. "You're not thinking of using that, are you?"
"I don't see you coming up with anything better," she shot back.
"We should stay here. The police will come."
Lois gave him a look. "You think the police can handle this? Right now, they're probably trying to stay alive just like us. When things go bad, relying on others is the worst move you can make."
Before he could argue, she bolted from cover.
She had barely taken two steps when one of the creatures dove straight at her.
Lois reacted instantly, throwing herself forward into a roll. As she hit the ground, she grabbed a loose stone and hurled it with all her strength.
It struck the creature mid-flight, knocking it off course.
It crashed into the ground nearby.
For a brief moment, relief flashed across her face.
They could be hurt.
But that relief didn't last.
Two more creatures immediately turned toward her, diving in.
"Damn it," she muttered, gripping another stone.
Taking down one had been pure luck. Facing multiple at once was a different story.
She wasn't Adrian. She wasn't Clark.
She was just human.
Behind her, Jimmy watched in horror. His fear was obvious, but then something clicked in his mind.
He raised his camera, adjusted the settings, and aimed directly at the creatures attacking Lois.
Click.
A bright flash burst from the camera.
The creatures instantly shifted their attention toward him.
Jimmy froze for half a second, then dropped the camera and ran.
"Bad idea, bad idea," he muttered under his breath as he sprinted.
The creatures chased him without hesitation.
He could hear them getting closer, their wings cutting through the air.
Just as he thought it was over, a powerful explosion echoed above.
