Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Renovation 5

Lin Jing knocked on the door of Room 1104 again. A woman opened the door.

Lin Jing explained his purpose directly. The woman frowned and said, "We'll finish dinner soon, and my son still has to study. How can you do this? It's affecting his studies, don't you know?"

"Indeed, I'm truly sorry about that. Sister, this is a small gift from me. Please accept it. We'll be finished in two days, apart from today. Could you please be flexible? I'm really anxious, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered you all." Lin Jing offered a pleasant word, handing over the snacks.

Wang Wen saw that the snacks in Lin Jing's hand were not cheap. She had seen them in the supermarket before, at least over a hundred yuan. And Lin Jing spoke sincerely. After all, there were only two days left, so it would only take an extra hour to decorate. In exchange for a snack, it wouldn't be a big deal.

"Okay, then I'll accept it. But please do it quickly. One or two days is fine, but taking longer than usual won't do," Wang Wen reminded him, accepting the snacks.

"Don't worry, I've signed a contract with the renovation company. The work has to be finished the day after tomorrow afternoon. I won't bother you too long," Lin Jing explained with a smile.

"Okay, okay,I'll take it."

"Take it, I'll be back," Lin Jing said a few more pleasantries before turning back downstairs.

As he left, Lin Zhongsheng had also returned. Seeing the construction workers still standing, he flew into a rage. "Lin Jing, it's so late and they're still renovating! Get them out! If they disturb anyone, they'll come knocking on our door soon."

"Don't worry, I just made an agreement with the neighbors to have them work until 7:30," Lin Jing said, sitting down on the sofa, a little tired.

"Can't you just do it tomorrow? I'm impressed by you, you're just so stubborn." Lin Zhongsheng hadn't eaten yet, and seeing Lin Jing staying home without cooking only intensified his anger.

"By the way, why didn't you cook?" he asked.

"I'm a little tired. I'm going out to eat later," Lin Jing replied calmly, his impatience with him growing.

"If you're not eating, what about me? And what crap did you buy again? Lin Jing, have you been working on all this these days?" Lin Zhongsheng asked, furious. He felt his son was becoming increasingly rebellious.

"Yes, I told you what I'm working on is far more important than work. You'll find out in a few days." Lin Jing scrolled through his phone, trying to find somewhere to buy winter clothing.

Beside him, Lin Zhongsheng continued to ramble on, but Lin Jing didn't listen at all. He pondered for a moment, trying to figure out where he could get some winter clothing. Finally, he opened WeChat again and found the person who had sold him the crossbow.

Lin Jing: Hello, I'm the person you bought the crossbow from this afternoon. Do you have any winter clothing?

A: The person selling outdoor gear: Of course not, but sir, aren't you into wilderness survival? Let's just say, there's no need to go all out. You already have all the gear you need.

Lin Jing: Okay, thank you.

He had wanted to ask the boss if he could get the loot, but in order to avoid trouble, Lin Jing didn't ask. Even if he did, most people wouldn't dare sell him such a thing.

Lin Zhongsheng kept talking for a while, but seeing that Lin Jing turned a deaf ear and he was really hungry, he went to the kitchen to cook.

Lin Jing glanced at his bedroom. The workers were welding the steel plates on the balcony side and were about to install the explosion-proof glass.

He stayed there for more than an hour. Fortunately, no one came to visit, but someone asked about it in the group chat.

At 7:30, the workers left work on time, and Lin Jing also planned to move out. Lin Zhongsheng asked angrily, "Where are you going again? Are you really going to let the sky drop money for you? This is not the way to spend money..."

Lin Jing ignored him, took his phone, and walked out. After the security door closed, he could still vaguely hear Lin Zhongsheng's angry roar.

Lin Jing ignored him and took a taxi back to the hotel. He planned to have a nice meal and then retire early. Once the apocalypse arrived, there would be no time for rest. His wisdom tooth had healed slightly, but it still hurt. He still had to get an IV the next morning, otherwise the symptoms would become a serious problem after the apocalypse.

For the next two days, Lin Jing basically watched over the construction site after his IV, then searched all over Jiangbei for winter clothing. However, all he found were mostly slightly thicker down jackets. Lin Jing had to buy a few extra-thick down jackets; it was better than nothing.

Time quickly arrived on the fifth day. Lin Jing went for his final IV in the morning, had a doctor at the private hospital do a final checkup, and prescribed some anti-inflammatory medication before returning home.

Lin Jing's bedroom was now completely renovated. Because they'd paid extra, the renovation company had sent in more workers. Not only were all six sides of Lin Jing's room welded to the building, but even the glass on her balcony had been replaced with explosion-proof glass. The room had even been re-tiled, re-puttyed, and painted. The custom-made wardrobe and bed had been restored to their original state.

The foreman smiled at Lin Jing and explained, "Mr Lin, your room has been completely installed just as you requested. All six sides are welded to the building, and several sides of the balcony have been replaced with explosion-proof steel. The windows and glass have also been upgraded to explosion-proof grade. You can see that the solar panels we installed now take up space on both sides of the windows, so you still have a good view. The recirculating water system has also been reinstalled, just as you requested. Let me show you how to use it."

The foreman politely explained to Lin Jing how to switch between the mains power supply and the solar panel circuit, and how to activate the recirculating water system in the bathroom.

Lin Jing took a quick look around the bathroom and saw a large water tank had been installed next to the existing water heater. It held plenty of water and didn't seem to take up much space.

The foreman then had a professional door installer explain in detail how to use the blast door.

"Mr Lin, this blast door requires a triple lock to open. The first is an infrared eye scan, the second is your fingerprint, and a key is required. Only if all three are successful will the door open. It's explosion-proof, so even an outside bomb can't blow it open. Don't worry," the door installer explained.

"Okay, I need to reset the administrator. How do I do that?" This installer was the current administrator, and Lin Jing didn't want to take any risks. Later, after everyone had left, he wanted to reset the administrators for both blast doors.

"I'll teach you. We'll go through it twice so you can learn it right away."

The installer patiently explained the reset steps step by step. Lin Jing memorized them all and even recorded a video on his phone.

At this moment, the workers outside are doing the finishing work. Now only the outer gate has not been fully completed. Several workers are speeding up the construction.

Lin Jing looked at his room and breathed a sigh of relief. Although he didn't make every place in the house an iron wall, the safety of his room was at least guaranteed.

Lin Jing looked at the installation of the gate and estimated that it should be completed in a while. He thought of the issue of surveillance again. Lin Jing remembered that in the original book, there was electricity and Internet at the beginning of the doomsday, especially the electricity. It should be a month after the outbreak of the doomsday that the power was paralyzed. In other words, if surveillance is installed in the building now, the surveillance should be able to be used for another month.

Thinking of this, Lin Jing immediately asked the foreman outside, "Can our company install surveillance?"

The foreman smiled and said, "Of course we can. You should have seen that we are professionals in home decoration."

"I'm talking about building-wide surveillance, connected in parallel. If one camera breaks, the others will still work," Lin Jing asked calmly, looking at the foreman.

The foreman's mouth dropped open; he hadn't expected Lin Jing to be so demanding, but he was certainly a man of wealth. "Mr Lin, your community management probably won't approve of you installing cameras throughout the building."

"Just two by the elevator exit on each floor—it won't be a problem. Oh, and one by the fire escape—I'll take care of that with community management. You just install them. They need to be installed by this afternoon, including a few on both sides of our unit doors. And all the cameras need to have night vision," Lin Jing said calmly.

If it weren't for the money, the foreman would have called Lin Jing delusional. His own home was already impenetrable, and now he was being told to install surveillance throughout the building.

Still, the foreman smiled at Lin Jing. "Mr Lin, look, here's the deal. I'll call the company to inquire about the price."

The foreman spoke with the company for a moment, then quickly returned to Lin Jing. "I just checked with the company, and the labor cost for installing one camera, plus the cost of the camera itself, is three hundred. As you requested, for a 21-story building, we need one on each side of the elevators and one in the fire corridor, meaning three per floor. And then you requested four cameras around the outside of the first floor, too, which also requires four. Then there's all the wiring, plus the need to connect the cameras to your computer. The total cost is fifty thousand yuan. Since you're in a hurry, we'll have to send in extra workers, so another fifty thousand, for a total of one hundred thousand. Is that acceptable to you?"

"Sure," Lin Jing nodded briskly.

"We'll need to pay for this before we place the order. Is that acceptable to you? If not, I'll contact the company again," the foreman said politely.

"No, that's a waste of time. It's the same account as last time, right? I'll transfer the money." Lin Jing said as he started to operate the phone.

"Yes, you place the order here, our people will deliver the materials at noon, and we will start the installation in the afternoon."

Lin Jing nodded, "It has been paid. You guys hurry up and make sure to finish these before this afternoon."

"Don't worry, Mr Lin, I guarantee you will be satisfied." The foreman smiled. He was just getting another business, and he would get a commission.
