Chapter 20 - Nen and Haki

Having eaten their fill, the three of them lay comfortably on the deck, gazing up at the bright moon of this world.

The night sea breeze caressed their faces, carrying the salty scent of the sea, invigorating their spirits.

"Kyle, why do I feel like using my Nen when I use Haki?"

Gon had just tried to activate Armament Haki and his Nen simultaneously, and he felt that his Nen was being consumed much faster than usual.

Killua immediately nodded in agreement, "I feel the same way. Just now, when I tried to cover my hand with Haki, I distinctly felt the rate of Nen loss accelerate."

Kyle sat up, the moonlight casting a soft halo on his face. He smiled and explained, "Whether it's Haki or Nen, they are essentially life energy originating from within our bodies.

Although their manifestations are different, their roots are our physical and mental energy. That is to say, whether we use Haki or Nen, we are consuming the same kind of 'aura'."

He paused, looking at his two attentive companions, and continued, "So when we use both abilities at the same time, the consumption naturally doubles.

It's like you usually carry a water bucket with one hand, but now you have to carry two buckets of water with one hand, so you naturally feel more strained."

"I see." Killua suddenly understood, his silver hair shimmering in the moonlight, "So it's not that Nen is consumed by Haki, but that we are outputting two types of energy simultaneously."

"Exactly." Kyle nodded approvingly, "So, do you know why the fusion of these two powers makes our attacks stronger and our speed faster?"

Gon tilted his head, thought for a moment, and said uncertainly, "Is it because of the superposition effect of the two powers?"

Killua thought more deeply: "I think it's because the fusion of the two powers allows us to mobilize more aura at the same time.

It's like we could originally only mobilize a part of our aura for attack or defense, but now we can mobilize two forces simultaneously, and what is consumed is all aura."

Kyle nodded, looking at Gon, who still had a bewildered expression.

Kyle smiled and explained again, "Let's use a concrete example. Suppose our total aura is one hundred. When we activate 'Ren', how much aura do you think we can mobilize from ourselves?"

Gon began counting on his fingers, but he was clearly confused by this abstract numerical concept.

Killua, on the other hand, carefully recalled his feelings during his training: "At my current level, when I fully activate 'Ren', I can probably maintain about ten percent of my total aura.

And during this process, although I can continuously replenish the consumed aura, I cannot gather more aura to strengthen my defense."

"Ten percent is already a good number," Kyle said affirmatively, "We call this 'Manifested Aura'. Through continuous training, this proportion can continue to increase, for example, to fifteen percent or even twenty percent. But this requires a long time of arduous training."

He stood up and paced on the deck, the moonlight stretching his shadow long.

"And Haki just makes up for this deficiency. When we activate Armament Haki and 'Ren' at the same time, Haki can mobilize ten percent of the aura, and 'Ren' can also mobilize ten percent.

This means that an attack that could originally only exert one-tenth of its power can now double to two-tenths. Of course, the consumption will also double."

Upon hearing this, Gon and Killua completely understood.

This was like two opponents of equal strength: one who could only punch with a single arm's force, and the other who could punch with a single arm but deliver double the attack; naturally, the latter had an absolute advantage.

"Since you both understand, why don't we start training now?" Kyle suddenly suggested, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.

Gon immediately jumped up excitedly, "Okay!"

Killua was also eager to try, "Anyway, I can't sleep, so I might as well seize the time to train."

Kyle smiled and nodded, "Okay, then we'll start with maintaining 'Ren'."

"Maintaining Ren?" Killua and Gon looked at Kyle with puzzled expressions.

"Imagine, a person who can maintain 'Ren' for an hour, and a person who can only maintain it for five minutes, when performing an attack of the same power, the former may only need to consume ten aura, while the latter may consume twenty or even more," Kyle said very seriously.

"It's basically endurance training." Killua pouted, feeling that Kyle was explaining things in a way even a child could understand again.

Kyle smiled indifferently, "Indeed, that's one way to understand it. Now, let's both activate 'Ren' and see who can maintain it longer."

Gon immediately followed suit, his body beginning to glow with Nen aura: "So I just keep it like this and do nothing?"

"Yes, just focus on maintaining it." Kyle said, activating his own "Ren" as well.

In an instant, a vast, overwhelming aura erupted from Kyle, forming a visible aura field under the moonlight. Gon and Killua were both so shocked by this powerful aura that their eyes widened.

"Kyle, your aura is so strong!" Gon exclaimed.

Killua carefully sensed the aura emanating from Kyle, and after a careful estimation, Kyle's manifested aura was a full six times higher than his own.

Kyle maintained his "Ren" state and said calmly, "To be precise, my total aura is around sixty thousand. But this is nothing to be proud of, after all, I've been training five years longer than you."

He paused briefly, then continued to explain, "It's not necessarily better to awaken your Nen Ability earlier. Just like Killua's family, who are all Nen Ability users, they waited until Killua was twelve before letting him formally engage with Nen.

This is because the formation of Nen requires corresponding experience and mental maturity as a foundation."

"Those who awaken their Nen too early often encounter more difficulties in training due to their lack of experience and immature minds, making it hard to cultivate truly powerful Nen."

Kyle's words were not unfounded. The strength of Nen is indeed closely related to the practitioner's overall quality and mindset.

His own history as a transmigrator, having faced life-and-death situations with a mature mind, allowed him to possess far more Nen than ordinary people.

Although he was only thirteen years old now, his aura was already comparable to some seasoned Nen users.

Under the moonlight, the three teenagers maintained their "Ren" state on the deck, surrounded by a faint glow.

It was only when Gon and Killua reached the three-minute mark that their sweat began to fall like raindrops, while Kyle, on the other hand, looked on with a smile, as if nothing was happening to him.
