Chapter 5 - Conflicts Of Interest

.

"I would never pay attention to someone like you, so do not waste your time coming to talk to me.

You are not acting sincerely, and we both know it.

To be honest, who in their right mind would put their faith in a poor man's loyalty?" Conor laughed as he made fun of Kelly without holding back.

When Kelly attempted to be supportive, Conor treated him like a barbecue chicken for the second time in a row.

One would assume that Kelly had previously offended Conor and that Conor was taking advantage of the ideal opportunity to retaliate.

Kelly wonders if Conor studied mischief at the university because of how easily he does it.

"How dare you talk to my dad like that? Have you gone crazy all of a sudden?" Katrina got up to face Conor.

She couldn't handle how furious she was with Conor.

She did not speak again after that.

She has been silent for some time, but when Conor became arrogant toward her father, she chose to stand up to him in retaliation.

"Who is speaking?

I am unable to locate anyone.

Am I starting to see things that are not real?" Conor squinted around, muttering to himself.

Even though he was positive Katrina was speaking, he chose to play mind games to get even with her.

"You can act as if you do not see me, but the fact is that you are extremely rude and harsh." Katrina went on.

"I do not think any woman would consent to marry you for a million dollars." She certainly doesn't allow him to get away with it.

"Oh, sure

Who do we have here?

Are you letting go of the leash at last? I briefly believed you were not real," Conor said with a giggle.

Taking a whiff of Katrina's body as if he were looking for something he had misplaced, he said. "That is what I considered."

" I had the feeling that something was leaking. I did not realize it was your hair.

What is the duration of your hairstyle? How is it possible to be both impoverished and filthy at the same time?" Conor lost his cool with Katrina. He vented his frustration on Katrina for actually doing nothing wrong.

"Now, Conor, stop it ."

George commanded.

"Or else what?" Conor cuts in sharply.

He stood in front of George to speak.

"I believed that we were enjoying ourselves. Or are you not amused?" With an outburst of evil laughter, he made fun of his father.

George was not spared for a moment from Conor's scolding.

"Son, get out of my office."

Calmly, George spoke.

He might have been meditating, but it would be difficult to tell if he were really upset with Conor.

"I apologize for not understanding.

What was it you said before?

Is it time for you to dismiss me from your office?" Conor lingered.

He did not attempt to get away.

"You heard correctly.

Leave my office immediately before I call the police to have you arrested." George posed a threat.

He threw Conor aside for the second time, screaming uncontrollably.

"All right! I am going home.

You are going to have a heart attack if you scream like that," Conor concedes defeat.

He made his way to the doorway.

As he was about to leave, he turned around and addressed his father. "I will be back if my bank is not restored."

"Is there a threat there?

These days, are you essentially threatening your father?" George snapped.

"Have you felt threatened?

Why would I want to do that?

I am simply reciting the facts.

I do not give a damn what you think.

I want you to know that I do not bluff." Conor affirmed with full confidence.

Before George could respond, Conor slammed the door shut and added, "I meant every damn word I said and more."

"Return here, son

You dare not abandon me in such a manner." George yelled an order.

After screaming a thousand times, Conor left without the aim of returning. He acted like his Father wasn't speaking to him.

George muttered incredulously, his head buried in the floor. "It is unbelievable that I am experiencing this. Where did I make a mistake?"

"Where did you make a mistake?

His decision to be a jerk was not your fault.

You tried your hardest to bring up your son morally." To help his friend, Kelly took over.

Instead of taking advantage of George's weakness, Kelly consoled him.

He showed why he's George's best friend.

"Avoid doing so. I was a lousy father, admit it. I understand exactly what you are doing.

I do not feel bad because you are trying to hide the truth, are you not?" George scowled.

"If you really are my friend, you will confront me with the truth and cease reassuring me with the falsehood."

Kelly's compliments did not move him.

George knew deep down that he was to blame.

As a child, he had always given Conor more importance than his second son, Tony, believing that Conor would become the family's spokesperson.

Unbeknownst to him, Conor had different plans than his father had intended.

One of the plans calls for Conor to take charge of his personal affairs and not let his father control every aspect of them.

"Remember your vow to your late wife? That you would always be there for your sons, no matter what?

If you feel like giving up on Conor, think about the vow.

You just passed the most difficult test of your life. Will you give up on that?" Kelly added.

George acknowledged his shortcomings, but Kelly was never disappointed.

He is not prepared to betray his pledge to George, which was to always be a friend who supports him.

"Is he that way all the time?

Is he simply upset that he saw me here?" Katrina speculated.

"I think this might be related to the unpleasant experience we had earlier."

She added.

Katrina continued to talk to George, but he ignored her completely.

She paused her speech to gaze at George. It dawned on her then that something was amiss.

"See, Dad.

Your friend has a problem." She saw that George was struggling to catch his breath, so she instantly sounded the alarm.

It was only when Katrina pointed it out to Kelly that he realized what was amiss. His thoughts were directed elsewhere.
