Why was he so gentle with the children but ice-cold with me?
I adjusted the leather strap of my purse and followed him deeper into the house. The interior took my breath away with its sleek black design and modern fixtures. I tried not to think about how much money had been poured into creating this sanctuary.
My footsteps echoed softly on the polished floors as I trailed behind Lucien until we reached a spacious office. Of course he would have a home office here too.
"What are you doing here?" His voice could have frozen water.
I couldn't meet his piercing stare and found myself studying the intricate patterns in the hardwood floor instead. This wasn't the same man who had smiled at his children moments ago.
"I asked you a question." Each word was clipped and sharp.
No, Tonia. Stop letting him see how much he affects you.
"The children wanted to see you." I forced strength into my voice and lifted my eyes to meet his unflinching gaze.
