Tonia's POV
"What do you want from me?" My voice cracked despite my efforts to sound steady. I cleared my throat, hoping he couldn't hear the tears I'd been shedding.
"It was you all along."
His words hit me like a punch to the gut. I knew exactly what he meant, even though I wished I didn't.
He'd figured it out.
"The woman at the hospital. The one who brought me back from the brink of death."
The weight of what I'd done years ago crashed down on me. I wanted to disappear into the floor. God, I despised myself in this moment.
"I didn't save anyone. I was an idiot who had no clue what I was doing," I shot back. The bitterness in my voice surprised even me.
"You did save me, though." His tone carried a certainty that made my stomach churn. "I've spent years searching for you, Tonia."
"Then keep searching somewhere else!"
"All this time, you knew the truth but kept your mouth shut."
