Tonia's POV
Minutes later, I stepped out of the patient's room with my mind spinning in circles. Ariya stood waiting near the corridor wall, her sharp eyes studying every detail of my expression.
"Have you been crying?" Her brow furrowed with concern.
I wiped my nose quickly, forcing my head to shake. "The patient and I just had a brief conversation."
"What exactly did he tell you? Did you actually treat him? I'm still confused because Solace swore she was the one who helped him."
The weight of deception pressed against my chest. I had to start covering my tracks if I wanted to survive this mess.
"Solace was right. When I was making my rounds yesterday, I only did a quick check on Mr. Joseph. I had no idea he was already waking up. Solace must have already worked her healing on him by then. Since I was the first doctor he saw when he opened his eyes, he naturally assumed I was his healer." The lies rolled off my tongue with disturbing ease.
