I didn't recognize his name, but this man had definitely been on my payroll years ago. He'd walked away from the job after just a few months.
So one of my own people had fabricated lies to drive Tonia away from me? This employee wouldn't have acted alone. Someone had to be pulling his strings.
"I'll track him down and get answers," I promised Tonia, sliding the envelope into my jacket.
"Do we really need to dig into this? We're back together now. Can't we just move forward?"
"Absolutely not." My voice came out sharper than I meant it to. "This bastard is the reason we lost six years together. If I'd been there, I would have protected you and our children. Maybe they would have made it. You never would have been forced to awaken Bradley. Don't you see how different everything could have been?"
She gave a slow nod, understanding flooding her features.
