Tonia's POV
Terror seized my body as my hands trembled uncontrollably. Every second counted now. I bolted forward without another thought.
The thunderous pursuit erupted behind me.
"Don't let her escape! Catch that woman!"
"Tonia!!!"
I refused to turn around. My legs pumped furiously beneath me as if death itself was breathing down my neck. Because it was. But their numbers overwhelmed me. The inevitable truth crashed over me like ice water - they would overtake me soon.
The deserted streets stretched endlessly ahead. My lungs burned with each desperate breath.
Realizing they could easily put a bullet in my back, I veered sharply toward the treeline.
The forest swallowed me whole. Minutes felt like hours as branches whipped against my face. If only I possessed a wolf spirit, this nightmare would be manageable.
