Chapter 2 - Humanitarian Course

The Great Knight smiled, inhaling the intoxicating scent of Novarek's dilemma.

"What I intend to say, Sir Novarek, is that you take on a humanitarian course I have in mind. Fret not! I assure you that it will be a piece of cake for a man of your nature." The Great Knight's smile was that of triumph.

The Great Knight, Konradin Mish was one of the strangest beings in the whole Valen Kingdom. No one could figure out what he truly was. Was he a human, a siren, a werewolf, a fox, a hybrid or a serpent? That was the question they pondered on daily.

He was all and none at the same time. He could always deduce the emotions that swirled through every being he came across. Konradin loved his gift. It let him toy with anyone he met and that to him, was like daily bread.

"What happens if I refuse?" Novarek steepled his hands.

"If you were to refuse... I'll have no choice but to compensate the victims with the head of their Massi monster." Konradin smirked.

Who was Konradin to tell him what to do? Xander thought. Being the king's advisor and second in command, if he were to refuse the Great Knight's proposal, it would arouse suspicion, hence ruin his reputation which would render Valen in chaos. He had no choice but to concede.

"Fine. I'll take  this humanitarian course, however, do not think for a moment that I'm conceding because of your threats." He responded, seemingly annoyed.

"Of course, Sir Novarek. Think of me as a butterfly." Konradin smiled, his hands cupping his chin now.

"What does this course entail? He snarled, taking his eyes off the knight's exposed neck.

"Something simple, Sir Novarek. The kingdom is still peaceful after the king's death which is all thanks to your hard work. I certainly cannot pull you away from your duties. Therefore, I'm going to take you on an interesting journey to discover self-compassion, patience and empathy. All qualities the king's second in command should have to rule the kingdom." Konradin let his words sink, ready to feast on its effects.

Xander stared blankly as the words sank in. "Self-compassion, patience and empathy? Did Konradin take him for a fool?" He thought.

"What is the meaning of this, Sir Konradin?" Novarek stood up abruptly, slamming his hand on the table.

"Patience, Sir Novarek. It meant everything you just heard me say. I intend to resolve this without violence. Expect me at the Maple palace when the sun sets." The Great Knight stood up, hair falling gracefully on his shoulders.

"Have a great day!" He smiled, bowing slightly before he turned to leave.

The Maple Palace at sunset? Who did Konradin think he was to order him around? Xander moved quickly, grabbing Konradin's hand. He pinned the Great Knight against the wall, pinning both his wrists above his head. Konradin smirked as he took in Xander's angry expression, his golden hair covering a small fraction of his face.
