Chapter 9 - WHEN MANTIS FIRST BROKE THE SKY

PAGE 1 – THE RESTLESS LIGHT

Panel 1:A blazing sunrise over the plains. The colors feel too bright, almost alive, bending and warping the horizon.

Caption (Narration): The Sun rose sharper that day — edges of light cutting the clouds. Something had changed.

Panel 2:Mantis stands on a high hill, holding a shard of sunlight in one hand and a drop of shadow in the other.

Mantis (grinning): I wonder what happens if they touch.

Panel 3:He presses the two together — they spark, hiss, and spin into a sphere of golden-black fire.

Caption: Curiosity is the mother of both miracles and mistakes.

Panel 4:The air ripples outward like a drumbeat. Birds scatter, winds howl.

Mantis(quietly): That's… new.

PAGE 2 – THE SHATTERING

Panel 1:The sky cracks — thin, glowing fissures spread across it like spiderwebs.

Caption: The first crack in creation — not made by anger, but by laughter gone too far.

Panel 2:Mantis stumbles back, eyes wide as the world shudders.

Mantis: I didn't mean to—

Panel 3:A bolt of golden light bursts from the fissure, shooting across the plains and scorching a river into glass.

Caption: The world cried out in brilliance.

Panel 4:In the distance, Kura, Sefu, and T'Laru shield their eyes as the light explodes overhead.

Kura: The sky's bleeding!

T'Laru: Not blood. Truth.

PAGE 3 – Gamiwe GIVES A WARNING

Panel 1:Inside her hut, Gamiwe's bowl of water trembles violently, cracks forming along its edge.

Gamiwe: Foolish child of dream and dawn… you've opened the skin of the world.

Panel 2:The Moon's reflection appears in the water.

Moon: Shall we mend it?

Gamiwe: Not yet. Every wound must first speak its pain.

Panel 3:She lifts her staff, chanting softly. Winds swirl through the doorway.

Caption: The Old Woman spoke to the sky, not too close, but to remember.

PAGE 4 – THE CHILDREN OF THE CRACK

Panel 1:From the glowing fissures descend strange beings — translucent, made of light and memory. Their faces shift constantly.

Caption: From the wound came creatures that were neither dream nor waking — fragments of unspoken thoughts.

Panel 2:Mantis watches them curiously as one floats near.

Mantis: You're… beautiful.

Fragment (whispering): We are your question, given shape.

Panel 3:The fragments begin to swarm and merge, their forms unstable.

Caption: But questions multiply faster than answers.

Panel 4:They spin upward, slamming back into the fissures — widening them further.

Mantis (yelling): Stop! You'll tear everything apart!

PAGE 5 – THE HEROES ARRIVE

Panel 1:Kura and Sefu rush up the ridge, wind whipping around them.

Kura: Mantis! What have you done?

Mantis (defensive): I was just trying to see what light could dream!

Panel 2:T'Laru plants her staff into the ground; runes of balance glow beneath her feet.

T'Laru: Then dream carefully — the world listens to your laughter now.

Panel 3:Sefu cups his hands, shouting toward the heavens.

Sefu: Hey! Sky! Hold yourself together before I punch you shut!

Caption: Courage, even foolish, steadies the trembling.

Panel 4:Kura kneels, placing both hands to the earth.

Kura: If he broke the sky, maybe the ground can heal it.

Panel 5:Light flows from the soil upward, knitting the smallest cracks shut.

PAGE 6 – THE AFTERMATH

Panel 1:The lightstorm fades. The fissures shrink until only faint scars remain, glowing faintly in the dawn.

Caption: The wound did not close — but it stopped bleeding.

Panel 2:Mantis sits slumped, wings drooping, eyes full of guilt and awe.

Mantis: I wanted to make something new. I didn't mean to hurt it.

Panel 3:Gamiwe appears in spirit form beside him, calm but firm.

Gamiwe: Creation and destruction are twins, little one. You can't invite one without the other.

Panel 4:Mantis looks up at her, half-smiling.

Mantis: Then maybe next time, I'll make something that can heal, too.

Panel 5:The Moon rises pale behind them.

Caption: Thus began the Mender's Path — when play learned patience.

PAGE 7 – THE WORLD REMEMBERS

Panel 1:The people look up at night — faint silver scars streak across the heavens.

Caption: The cracks never vanished. They became constellations — reminders that even mistakes can shine.

Panel 2:Children point to the glowing lines, calling them Mantis's Jumps.

Sefu (off-panel): The fool who kicked the sky open!

Kura (smiling): The fool who taught us how to look up.

Panel 3:Mantis watches from a hilltop, grinning softly.

Mantis (whispering): Not broken… just open.

Panel 4:The stars flicker like laughter echoing forever.

Caption: And the world breathed again — cracked, but alive.
