Chapter 78 - Chapter Seventy Eight: The Weight of What Might Happen

The stillness that followed was not peace.

It only resembled it, the core no longer trembled, no longer distorted or lashed out in erratic pulses. Instead, it settled into something far more dangerous, an eerie, deliberate calm, as though the system had withdrawn not in defeat, but in thought.

Around them, the space held its shape with unsettling precision, every angle fixed, every surface too steady to trust. Adanna felt it first, not as fear, but as awareness sharpening itself into something almost painful.

"It's not done," she said quietly.

Darian did not answer immediately. His hand remained wrapped around hers, firm, grounding, but his gaze had shifted, not outward, not toward the system, but inward, as if measuring something he could not quite see.

"No," he said at last. "It's just… changed how it plays."

The words lingered between them, heavy with implication, because they both understood now: this was no longer about confusion, or deception, or even control.
