Chapter 7 - 5/2 THE COMBAT TRIAL

The arena was a massive circular platform carved from spirit stone, surrounded by formation barriers to protect the audience. Kai stood at one end, facing a spirit beast that materialized from light—a Crimson Tiger, appropriate for Foundation Establishment third level.

In his previous life, he'd barely survived this trial, using every dirty trick he knew to outlast the beast rather than defeat it.

Now, watching the tiger circle him with glowing red eyes, Kai felt only calm.

I've fought demon emperors. I've stared down void beasts that could swallow planets. You are not a threat.

The tiger lunged.

Kai moved with the efficiency of ten thousand battles, sidestepping at the last possible moment. His hand shot out, fingers pressed to the tiger's flank in a specific pattern.

Void energy pulsed. Not destructive, just disruptive—targeting the formation array that sustained the beast's existence.

The tiger dissolved into motes of light before it hit the ground.

Elder Shen blinked. "That was... seven seconds."

In the stands, Kai's father was on his feet, eyes wide with shock. Around him, the other candidates were whispering again. Some looked awed. Others, like his cousin Shen Rui, looked furious.

"Pass," Elder Shen declared. "Next candidate."

Kai walked off the platform and found Yuhan waiting at the edge, his own combat trial already complete. The wreckage of three spirit beasts lay scattered across another arena—Yuhan had been tested against Foundation Establishment ninth level opponents and destroyed them all in less than a minute.

"Efficient," Yuhan commented.

"I learned from the best."

"Flatterer."

They stood together as the other candidates took their turns. Most struggled. A few failed outright. Kai's brothers both passed, though it took them several minutes each.

But Kai's attention kept drifting to the sect disciples watching from the upper galleries. He recognized some of them from his previous life—inner disciples who would later become elders, outer disciples destined for greatness or tragedy.

And there, in the highest gallery, sat three figures whose presence made Kai's Void-aspect core pulse with warning.

"Yuhan," he murmured. "Upper left gallery. Three people in sect elder robes."

Yuhan's gaze flicked up, then back down, his expression never changing. "I see them."

"The woman on the left is Elder Mei. Phoenix Flame Sect."

"Here as an observer?"

"Or a spy. The sect examinations are technically open to visitors from allied sects, but—"

"But the Phoenix Flame Sect won't be an ally for much longer," Yuhan finished. "Five years from now, they break the non-aggression pact."

"If we don't change things, yes."

They fell silent as another candidate entered the arena. But Kai felt the weight of Elder Mei's gaze on them, analytical and calculating.

She's noticed us. Two unprecedented talents appearing at the same examination. She'll report this to her sect master.

In his previous life, Kai had been beneath everyone's notice until he reached Soul Transformation Realm. He'd risen to power slowly, giving him time to prepare, to understand the political landscape.

Now, displaying this much talent this early, he and Yuhan were painting targets on their backs.

"We're changing the timeline more than we intended," Kai said quietly.

"I know." Yuhan's hand brushed against his, hidden between their bodies where no one could see. "But backing down now would be more suspicious than pressing forward. We demonstrate talent but hide technique. Let them think we're prodigies, not time travelers."

"Agreed."

The combat trials ended as the sun reached its zenith. Of the three hundred candidates, only ninety-seven remained.

"One hour rest," Elder Shen announced. "Then we begin the final trial."

As the candidates dispersed, seeking shade and water, Kai felt a presence approaching from behind. He turned to find his father, Shen Zhu, looking at him with an expression Kai couldn't quite read.

"Father."

"Kai." Shen Zhu glanced at Yuhan, standing a respectful distance away. "That was... I've never seen anything like that. Your technique, your control—where did you learn to fight like that?"

From a thousand years of war. "I've been studying in private. Old manuals I found in the family library."

It was a weak excuse, but his father seemed to accept it. "I underestimated you. For years, I thought..." He trailed off, pain flashing across his features. "I'm sorry, my son. For giving up on you. For declaring you trash when I should have supported you."

In his previous life, Kai's father had died during a spirit beast raid before they could reconcile. Those words of apology had never been spoken.

Kai felt his throat tighten. "You did what you thought was right. I understand."

"No, you're too generous. I failed you as a father." Shen Zhu placed a hand on Kai's shoulder. "But I see now what you can become. Whatever you need—resources, techniques, support—the Shen family will provide it."

"Thank you, Father."

After Shen Zhu left, Yuhan returned to Kai's side. "That was good to see."

"What was?"

"You and your father reconciling. In our previous life, you had regrets about him."

Kai nodded slowly. "He died before I could prove myself. Before I could make him proud." He looked at Yuhan. "What about your family? Your master?"

A shadow passed over Yuhan's face. "My master is still alive, still training me. But my family..." He paused. "They died in the Chaos Wars. I couldn't save them."

"We'll save them this time."

"Will we?" Yuhan's voice was soft. "Every change we make creates ripples. What if we save some people but condemn others? What if preventing the Chaos Wars leads to something worse?"

It was a fear Kai had wrestled with since waking in his younger body. The timeline was delicate. Changing one event could cascade into a thousand unintended consequences.

"Then we'll face whatever comes," Kai said firmly. "But we can't let fear of the unknown stop us from trying to save the people we love."

Yuhan's expression softened. "When did you become so wise?"

"I had a thousand years to think about my mistakes."

"Fair point."

A bell chimed across the arena, signaling the end of the rest period.

"Final trial time," Kai said. "Ready?"

Yuhan's hand found his again, squeezing once before letting go. "With you? Always."
