Chapter 10 - THE SECT MASTER'S SUMMONS

The sect master's residence was located at the highest peak of Azure Sky Mountain, where spiritual energy was so dense it formed visible mist. Kai and Yuhan climbed the thousand steps together, ostensibly as two new disciples summoned together by coincidence.

In reality, Kai was acutely aware of every point where Yuhan's sleeve brushed against his, every shared breath in the thin mountain air.

"Nervous?" Yuhan asked quietly.

"About meeting a Core Formation cultivator while pretending to be an impressed sixteen-year-old? Slightly."

"Just remember—we're talented but inexperienced. Eager but respectful. Powerful but still learning."

"In other words, act our apparent age."

"Exactly."

They reached the summit, where a modest pavilion stood overlooking the three realms. Despite being the sect master's residence, it was surprisingly simple—wood and paper rather than jade and gold.

Liang Qiu stood at the edge, hands clasped behind his back, watching the sunrise. He was a man in his sixties with a long white beard and eyes that seemed to see through everything.

"Kai Shen. Feng Yuhan." He didn't turn around. "Come. Stand beside me."

They approached, taking positions on either side of him. The view was breathtaking—the Mortal Realm spread out below them like a living map, mountains and rivers and cities all visible in the early morning light.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Liang Qiu said. "I never tire of this view. It reminds me why we cultivate—not for personal power, but to protect what matters."

Kai felt a pang. In his previous life, he'd heard Liang Qiu say similar words before leading the Azure Sky Sect in its final stand against the demonic invasion. The old man had died buying time for evacuees to escape, his body never recovered.

"Elder Shen tells me you both showed exceptional talent in the examination," Liang Qiu continued. "A void-aspect core and heaven-grade sword potential. In three hundred years of sect history, we've never had two such talents in the same generation."

"We're honored by the sect's recognition, Sect Master," Yuhan said respectfully.

"Don't be. Recognition means expectations. Expectations mean pressure. Pressure breaks most people." Liang Qiu finally turned to face them, and Kai saw something unexpected in those ancient eyes: wariness. "I've seen many prodigies in my life. Most burned out or were destroyed by jealous rivals. A few transcended and became legends. Do you know what separated them?"

"Strength?" Kai ventured.

"Wisdom," Liang Qiu corrected. "Knowing when to advance and when to hold back. When to reveal power and when to hide it. When to fight and when to yield." He studied them both carefully. "You're both young. Sixteen, seventeen at most. Yet you fight and comprehend techniques like cultivators with decades of experience. Why is that?"

Kai's heart rate spiked, but he kept his expression carefully neutral. Beside him, Yuhan's spiritual signature remained perfectly calm.

"I found old manuals in my family library," Kai said. "Techniques created by ancestors. I've been studying them since childhood."

"And I've been training under my master since I was five," Yuhan added. "He's a retired sword saint who believes in harsh, practical education."

Both technically true, even if they omitted the part about having a thousand years of additional experience.

Liang Qiu's eyes narrowed slightly. "I see. And these old manuals, this harsh training—they taught you to defeat opponents several levels above you? To comprehend technique principles that elude cultivators at Core Formation?"

"We got lucky," Kai said.

"Luck." Liang Qiu smiled, but there was no humor in it. "You know what I think? I think you're both hiding something. Something significant. But..." He raised a hand as both of them tensed. "I'm not going to press. Everyone has secrets. What matters is whether those secrets pose a threat to the sect."

He moved closer, and suddenly his cultivation aura pressed down on both of them—a fraction of a Core Formation expert's true power, but enough to make most Foundation Establishment cultivators collapse.

Kai and Yuhan stood firm, though Kai made sure to let his knees tremble slightly, to show appropriate strain.

"You don't break easily," Liang Qiu observed, releasing the pressure. "Good. You'll need that resilience. I'm going to tell you something that most outer disciples don't learn for years: the Azure Sky Sect is in danger."

That got their attention.

"Danger, Sect Master?" Yuhan asked.

"The Phoenix Flame Sect has been making aggressive moves. Border disputes, poaching our disciples, spreading rumors about our declining strength. They're testing us, looking for weaknesses."

Five years earlier than the timeline should show. Kai's mind raced. We've already changed things. Our appearance has accelerated their plans.

"Why are you telling us this?" Kai asked.

"Because I suspect you're going to become Core Formation cultivators within a few years. When that happens, you'll be key players in whatever conflict comes. Better you know the stakes now." Liang Qiu's expression turned serious. "I'm offering you a choice. You can remain ordinary outer disciples, cultivate slowly and safely, attract no attention. Or you can accept my personal guidance, advance rapidly, and prepare to defend the sect when the time comes. The first path is easier but limits your potential. The second path is dangerous but necessary."

Kai and Yuhan exchanged glances. In their previous lives, neither had received this offer. Liang Qiu had never known they existed until much later.

"We accept the second path," they said in unison.

Liang Qiu smiled—genuinely this time. "I thought you might. You both have the eyes of people who've seen too much, who understand that power without purpose is meaningless. Very well. Starting tomorrow, you'll train directly under me. But understand: I will push you harder than you've ever been pushed. I will test your limits and then push past them. Some disciples break under my training. Are you sure?"

"We're sure, Sect Master," Kai said.

"Then let's begin now." Liang Qiu gestured, and suddenly they were surrounded by formation arrays—testing arrays that measured everything from spiritual energy control to reaction time to battle instincts. "Show me what you can really do. No holding back. Whatever secrets you're hiding, I want to see your true potential."

Kai and Yuhan looked at each other. This was dangerous. If they revealed too much, questions would multiply. But if they held back, they'd lose this opportunity to accelerate their growth and influence.

Yuhan nodded slightly. Trust him. We need powerful allies.

Kai made a decision. "Sect Master, what we're about to show you... we'd prefer it remain confidential."

"Of course. This is a private evaluation."

"Then..." Kai drew on his void-aspect energy, letting it circulate through all five Void Apertures—a cultivation method that shouldn't exist yet. His power surged, and the testing arrays lit up like stars.

Beside him, Yuhan drew his sword, and suddenly the air was full of sword intent so pure and concentrated that it made the formations resonate.

Liang Qiu's eyes widened. "This... this is Core Formation level technique control. How...?"

"We can't explain everything," Yuhan said. "But we can promise this: we're loyal to the sect, we mean no harm, and we want to help prevent the coming conflicts."

"Coming conflicts? Plural?"

Damn. Yuhan revealed too much. But maybe it was time for some carefully chosen truths.

"The Phoenix Flame Sect is just the beginning," Kai said carefully. "We have... insights. Predictions. Call it divination or fortune-telling or whatever you like. But we know there are storms coming, and we want to be strong enough to weather them."

Liang Qiu stared at them for a long moment. Then, slowly, he started laughing—a deep, genuine laugh that echoed across the mountaintop.

"Prophets. I'm training prophets. The heavens have a sense of humor." He sobered, but his eyes were alight with something Kai recognized: hope. "All right. Keep your secrets, for now. But know this: if you ever need to tell someone the truth, my door is open. Understood?"

"Understood, Sect Master."

"Good. Now then..." Liang Qiu's cultivation aura blazed, and suddenly he looked every bit the legendary warrior who'd defended the sect through countless crises. "Let's see exactly how good you two really are. Attack me with everything you have. If you can land a single hit, I'll personally sponsor your advancement to inner disciple immediately."

Kai and Yuhan exchanged grins.

Finally. A real challenge.

"Together?" Yuhan asked.

"Together," Kai confirmed.

They attacked.
