ELENA POV
That night, I couldn't sleep.
Adrien was free. Actually, truly free.
I kept replaying Martina's words. Not guilty on all counts. The jury believed him.
For the first time in months, something had gone right. Someone I loved hadn't been destroyed by this fight.
I lay on my mattress, staring at the ceiling, imagining Adrien somewhere out there. Maybe just breathing free air and feeling the weight lift off his shoulders.
He couldn't contact me. The no-contact order was still in place.
But he was free. That was enough.
For now.
The next morning, the news was everywhere.
"Your boyfriend's all over TV," a guard said during breakfast delivery. "Every channel. He's like a celebrity now."
"What's he saying?"
"A lot of stuff about his father. About corruption. About you." She paused. "He really loves you, huh?"
"Yeah. He does."
"Lucky girl."
Was I? Lucky felt like the wrong word for someone in federal detention facing murder charges.
