Chapter 27 - Chapter Seven: Ink and Responsibility

Lagos was alive.

Green jerseys flooded the streets. Drums echoed. Flags waved from car windows.Nigeria wasn't just playing a match —

They were chasing the World Cup.

Inside the stadium, Khali stood at the front of the tunnel, the captain's armband firm on his arm. This time, it wasn't a friendly.

This was official.This was history.

Behind him, Bello adjusted his boots and leaned closer.

"Whatever happens," Bello said, "lead like you always do."

Khali nodded. "Together."

World Cup Qualifier Night

The whistle blew.

Nigeria vs Senegal.Fast. Physical. Ruthless.

Khali controlled the midfield like a general — calling presses, slowing the game when needed, lifting the tempo when the crowd demanded blood.

In the 41st minute, Senegal scored.

Silence fell.

Khali clapped loudly, shouting,"Eyes up! We're still here!"

Second half.

Nigeria pushed harder.

In the 67th minute, Khali spotted a winger making a blind-side run. One touch. One perfectly weighted pass.

Assist.

GOAL.

The stadium exploded.

1–1.

Then, late in the match — 89th minute — a free kick just outside the box.

Players stepped back.

Bello looked at Khali."You take it."

Khali breathed in.

Shot.

The ball curled over the wall and dipped —

GOAL.

Nigeria won 2–1.

Khali dropped to his knees, overwhelmed.

Not because of the goal.

But because he had carried the team — and they followed.

Captain of Nigeria

After the match, the coach hugged him tightly.

"You didn't just wear the armband," he said."You earned it."

Back in the dressing room, Bello raised Khali's arm.

"Captain," he said simply.

Khali smiled — tired, fulfilled.

The Other Battle

Two days later, Khali was back in Manchester.

Different pressure.

Same weight.

His agent laid three folders on the table.

"City want to extend your contract," he said."Five years. Improved salary. Leadership role."

He slid another folder forward.

"Two other clubs are watching closely. Bigger money. Guaranteed starting spot."

Khali leaned back.

This wasn't about money.

It was about direction.

He thought of:

His debut at the Etihad

Subbing De Bruyne

Learning patience

Becoming captain for Nigeria

He thought of Ameera.Stability. Growth. Legacy.

The Decision

At the City training ground, Khali sat across from the manager.

"We believe in you," the manager said."But staying here means competition. Nothing is handed."

Khali didn't hesitate.

"That's why I want to stay."

The pen felt heavier than he expected.

He signed.

Ink Dries. Future Set

That evening, Khali stood on his apartment balcony, city lights glowing below.

A message came in.

From Bello:

"World Cup captain. New contract. Proud of you."

Khali replied:

"Next goal is bigger."

Bello answered:

"Always."

Khali slipped his phone into his pocket and looked up at the sky.

He had chosen patience over comfort.Growth over shortcuts.

And the world was just starting to notice.
