Chapter 177 - Chapter 176: Gaara vs. Senju Itsuki

Yakumo's bloodline limit could turn illusion into reality, allowing her genjutsu to affect the physical world.

But in the end, an illusion was still an illusion.

It only looked real — like the steel wall blocking the seawater or the little boat behind it — yet in truth, they were fake.

What Yakumo actually did was use genjutsu to make the seawater part.

Once her chakra output stopped, everything would vanish.

Of course, others didn't know the details. They really thought Yakumo could create something from nothing.

That kind of ability was so enviable it made people drool.

Some twisted nobles and wealthy lords, staring at Yakumo's delicate face, even began having inappropriate thoughts.

To them, ninjas were nothing more than tools. Being noticed by them was an "honor," and ninjas should be grateful for it.

Meanwhile, Tenten came to her senses, realizing she was being held in Itsuki's arms, hanging against the tall wall he had raised.

"Huh, I was so scared! I thought I was going to die!" Tenten let out a long sigh, though her heart was still pounding wildly.

"You're a little too reckless," Itsuki teased with a small smile.

Of Konoha's so-called four beauties, the first person Itsuki had truly gotten close to was Tenten.

Back then, she had tried to win his favor, even doing housework for him on her own.

But not long after, Itsuki moved into a new house, and Tsunade, Shizune, and others moved in one after another.

Tenten lost her chance.

It had been a while now, and the two hadn't had much contact since then.

Unfortunately, Tenten couldn't stay with Itsuki in public now, so she quickly returned to the competition field.

After all, there was land underneath, and the amount of seawater released was limited.

Apart from the first wave of impact, it quickly seeped into the ground.

Still, the venue was muddy, with water everywhere, so it needed to be cleaned before the next match could continue.

"In this match, Kurama Yakumo wins!"

It took Shiranui Genma a while to come back to his senses.

He quickly announced the result, asked the two players to leave the field, and arranged for people to clean up the venue.

"Too strong! Those two were already way beyond the level of a Genin. I didn't expect them to both be women."

"Yeah, and the contestants in the previous matches were all strong too. This exam is going to be really valuable."

"That match was already exciting… and now I can't wait for the Wood Release battle later!"

"I heard the opponent is the Kazekage's son, and they call him a monster. It's going to be a real clash of titans."

"That's awesome! The tickets are totally worth it!"

The audience buzzed with excitement.

Some were still amazed at the fight Tenten and Yakumo had just put on, while others eagerly looked forward to the next match.

The venue was reorganized quickly.

Thanks to the efficiency of the ninja staff, even replacing the entire piece of land only took a few minutes.

At the signal from referee Genma Shiranui, the next players began to enter the arena.

Surprisingly, Gaara — who had been bloodthirsty in the preliminaries — now appeared very calm.

Itsuki arrived at the field in a flash, but Gaara walked down the stairs slowly, giving the impression he wanted to delay the fight.

Of course, anyone who knew Gaara wouldn't think so.

In truth, Gaara was just looking forward to the battle with Itsuki too much.

On the surface he was calm, but inside he was a storm. Walking slowly down the stairs gave him time to control his emotions.

But in the corridor, Gaara was blocked.

"Hey, Sand Village boy!"

Two ninjas wearing Kusagakure forehead protectors stood in his path.

One said coldly, "Low-level competitions like the Chunin Exams are perfect for gambling. Several daimyos came here just for that."

The other Kusa-nin spoke more gently. "So… please lose this match on purpose, okay?"

Bang!!

The next moment, the two grass-nin turned into pools of blood, leaving tattered corpses behind.

Gaara lifted his head, expression twisted and ferocious, eyes glinting cold.

The emotions he had tried to suppress only grew more violent.

By the time he walked out of the corridor and entered the arena, his face had returned to indifference.

But in the depths of his eyes, the madness still burned.

"The most anticipated match is about to begin!"

Genma Shiranui bit down on his senbon, eyes narrowing as he looked at the two contestants: Senju Itsuki and Gaara.

Even he, the referee, couldn't help but feel excited.

The Chunin Exams were held twice a year, but the Joint Chunin Exam only once every few years.

This was the first time in history two such high-level and popular candidates faced each other.

"Itsuki, come on! Beat that guy with the gourd on his back!"

From the lounge, Naruto cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted at the top of his lungs.

His voice boomed through the stadium, drowning out the crowd chatter.

"Haha, it's that brat from the first game. He's hilarious!"

"Yeah, let's cheer with him!"

"Perform well, boy who can use Wood Release! Don't bring shame to Konoha and the First Hokage!"

"I heard he's the great-grandson of the Second Hokage. So why does he have the abilities of the First?"

"Idiot, the First and Second were brothers. Same clan, same bloodline."

"Come on! Fight well!"

The whole audience was filled with joy and anticipation.

Even the jonin and elite jonin were watching with full attention.

The Kazekage and Hokage leaned forward, clearly expectant.

Orochimaru, disguised as the Fourth Kazekage, didn't even bother teasing Hiruzen. He watched intently.

He had fought Itsuki before. With Gaara's current strength, Orochimaru knew he wouldn't last long against Itsuki.

But that didn't matter. Their plan was to wait until all the manpower was in place before launching the Konoha Crush.

Gaara would unleash Shukaku in the center of the village, causing chaos and destruction, drawing everyone's attention.

So the fight between Itsuki and Gaara couldn't reach a conclusion. If Gaara was injured too badly here, it would ruin the plan.

At that moment, an uninvited guest entered the stands.

Sasuke, who had been training Chidori under Kakashi, finally arrived.

He hadn't bothered watching the earlier matches. Those people weren't even worth his time.

Even Karin, who had beaten him in the prelims, was nothing to him now that he had mastered Chidori.

As long as he was serious, no one could stand against him.

Sasuke came now only for this — to see the two people he was most interested in.

"I hope they don't disappoint me," he muttered. "If they're weaker than me now, it'll be boring."

"It looks like the audience can't wait!"

Genma Shiranui glanced up at the stands, saw the Third Hokage nod, and signaled the fighters forward.

"So now… Gaara vs. Senju Itsuki! The match begins!"

Genma swung his right hand dramatically between them, then leapt back to give them space.

Boom!!

He had barely moved when a massive sand arm smashed into where Itsuki had been standing, sending sand and dust flying.

The sand poured out from the gourd on Gaara's back.

He had been trying to suppress his emotions, but now he couldn't hold back.

Clutching his forehead, Gaara muttered in pain.

"Don't be angry… Mom… I'm sorry for feeding you such foul blood just now. But this time… this time, the blood will be delicious!"
