Chapter 82: The Ace! Gardevoir!
Malamar's eyes widened. Thanks to Trick Room, its speed was now equal to Gyarados's, but Gyarados had Waterfall's acceleration, and Malamar didn't.
Dodging was impossible.
And seeing the pale green barrier in front of Gyarados, Malamar had no thoughts of attacking.
It didn't hesitate. It also raised a pale green barrier.
Protect!!
It couldn't dodge, and it couldn't counter-attack.
There was only one option left: defend.
A Gyarados with four Dragon Dances... its attack power was savage. Even with Protect up, Malamar felt a deep sense of dread.
"Krack..."
A crisp sound echoed. Malamar now knew for sure.
Yep. Can't block this...
That was Malamar's last thought.
"BANG..."
"Malaaa!!!—"
Malamar let out a piteous cry. Its Protect barrier, facing a +4 "Freight Train Charge," hadn't even lasted a second. It simply shattered.
Gyarados stopped, but Malamar was sent flying.
It flew over ten meters.
By the time it stopped moving, its eyes were swirls.
"Krr-shhh..."
As Malamar fainted, the Trick Room lost its anchor and shattered.
"ROOOAR!!!—"
Gyarados roared, its aura triumphant.
"Ding! LV.36 Gyarados defeated LV.45 Malamar! Received: 1900 Gold!!"
"Ding! Spoils of War triggered! Congratulations, Host, for receiving an additional reward! 2500 Gold!!!"
Nice!
As expected, fighting above his weight class was the fastest way to earn Gold.
"Malamar is unable to battle! Gyarados is the winner!!"
Zayne, his face heavy, recalled Malamar. After hesitating, he finally threw his second Pokémon.
To Kenji's surprise, Zayne didn't send out Medicham as expected. Instead, he sent out... the "waifu" Pokémon... no, Gardevoir!!
On the vibrant grass field, a humanoid Pokémon wearing what looked like a white dress appeared. It had a mature, elegant aura, and its green, curled hair framed its face. It stood quietly, its one visible red eye silently observing Gyarados and Kenji.
Gardevoir
Level: LV.48
Ability: Telepathy
Potential: A+
A level 48 Gardevoir!!
This Gardevoir... this must be Zayne's true ace.
"Gardevoir, I'm counting on you."
Zayne's tone had even softened.
"Garde..."
Gardevoir slowly turned its head and nodded.
"Gyarados! Aqua Tail!!!"
Before Gardevoir even turned back, Gyarados had already crossed the distance, its tail raised high, smashing down.
"BOOM!!!!—"
The Aqua Tail slammed into the ground, blasting another huge hole in the grass field. But Gardevoir had miraculously vanished.
"Behind you! Dodge it!!"
"BANG!!—"
Gyarados reacted instantly, moving the moment Kenji spoke, narrowly dodging a Shadow Ball.
Teleport!
At the other end of the field, Gardevoir reappeared, its psychic power swirling, watching from a distance.
This Gardevoir... is no joke!!
Kenji keenly sensed that Gardevoir's Telepathy ability seemed to be having a subtle, chemical reaction with Zayne's "special ability." It was massively boosting Gardevoir's combat effectiveness.
"Close the distance!!"
Gyarados whipped its head around, its aura locking onto Gardevoir again, and charged.
Gardevoir showed no panic. Psychic energy surged, and it projected a wave of Confusion at Gyarados, trying to stop its advance.
At the same time, Fairy-type energy gathered in its hands. A brilliant light condensed and then shot out.
"Dazzling Gleam!!!"
"ROAR!!—"
Gyarados roared. Its aura flared, shattering the psychic hold on its body. It twisted its massive frame, its body moving with incredible agility, easily dodging the attack. It was in Gardevoir's face again, another Aqua Tail smashing down.
But an instant before the tail hit, Gardevoir was enveloped in psychic energy and vanished.
The attack hit empty air.
"ROOOAR!!!—"
Gyarados roared, its expression even more furious.
Kenji's mouth twitched. So this was Zayne's tactic: just use Teleport to stall until Gyarados's stamina ran out.
It was a smart move. If Kenji were in his shoes, he'd do the same.
After all, a +4 Gyarados was a one-hit KO, no exaggeration, even for a level 48 Gardevoir. One Aqua Tail was all it would take.
The strategy was sound, but... it was just so disgusting.
Forget Gyarados, even Kenji was feeling suffocated and frustrated.
"Come back for now, Gyarados."
Kenji raised Gyarados's Pokéball and activated it.
A red beam shot out and recalled the furious Gyarados.
"Kenji has recalled his Gyarados! Is he going to send out Beedrill?!?!"
This was the first time in the tournament that Kenji had voluntarily switched his Pokémon.
If they kept this up, it was unclear who would win, but it would be a massive waste of time.
