Chapter 81: Dragon Dance! Dragon Dance! And Still More Damn Dragon Dances!!
This was fundamentally different from the shallow telepathy used by mere psychics.

Zayne's "Telepathy," however, was two-way. He didn't just send his thoughts; he could hear his Pokémon's thoughts in return.
This special ability was not only useful in battle but also provided an immense advantage in training. Furthermore, Mega Evolution required a trainer and Pokémon to achieve a perfect, heartfelt bond. This ability would make mastering Mega Evolution far easier.

Malamar gave a strange cry. While Gyarados was still in its Dragon Dance animation, Malamar thrust the Psychic energy it had gathered in its hands into the air.
The next moment, the Psychic energy expanded, and a special zone instantly unfolded from Malamar's position, covering half the battlefield.
It was Trick Room.
Its effect: to reverse the speed priority of all Pokémon within the zone.
But the Trick Room only covered half the field, and Gyarados was not currently inside it.
Kenji wasn't worried. "Continue Dragon Dance!" he commanded.
"Mala!!—"
Malamar's eyes flashed with psychic energy again. Simultaneously, the patterns on its body began to pulse with a faint light.
This was Malamar's method for Hypnosis—controlling the flashing, luminous patterns on its body to induce sleep. Its hypnotic power was formidable, easily rivaling a Hypno's.
Kenji averted his gaze, refusing to look at the patterns. But Malamar's Hypnosis, projected by its psychic power, had already enveloped Gyarados.
A wave of sleep-inducing suggestions, carried by psychic energy, flooded Gyarados's senses, trying to lull it to sleep.
But unfortunately for Malamar, Gyarados was holding the Quicksilver Sash. It was completely immune.
"ROAR!!!—"
Gyarados roared, ignoring the psychic suggestion invading its consciousness, and completed its second Dragon Dance.
"Dragon Dance!"
With two Dragon Dances, Gyarados's Speed and Attack had been raised dramatically. This made the third Dragon Dance execute even faster.
"Oh my goodness! Kenji's Gyarados is still using Dragon Dance!!!"
Having no time to wonder why its Hypnosis failed, Malamar saw Gyarados attempting a third Dragon Dance, and its expression turned to panic.
"Mala!!—"
The next second, sparks gathered in Malamar's tentacles, then exploded outward into several tendrils of lightning—a Thunderbolt—that shot toward Gyarados.
But Gyarados stood its ground, showing no fear of the incoming Thunderbolt as it continued the Dragon Dance.
"ROAR!!!—"
Thunderbolt was incredibly fast. In an instant, the pale yellow lightning enveloped Gyarados.
The horrifying BZZZZT of sizzling electricity filled the arena.
Clearly, tanking a Thunderbolt from an opponent nine levels higher was an agonizing experience.
But Gyarados endured the pain, forcing its way through the electric current to complete the third Dragon Dance!!
Just as the Thunderbolt ended, a faint, almost invisible wisp of smoke rose from Gyarados's body.
But Kenji, with his Data-Eye, knew exactly what had happened. Gyarados had triggered [Aegis of the Legion]!!
It had become untargetable. The next attack's damage would be completely nullified.
"Gyarados! Continue Dragon Dance!!"
A fourth Dragon Dance!!!
Gyarados didn't hesitate, immediately starting its fourth Dragon Dance.
"A fourth Dragon Dance!! Kenji is still having Gyarados use Dragon Dance!!!"
Mimi cried out, and the audience was in an uproar. No one understood what Kenji was doing.
He was willing to tank a 4x super-effective Thunderbolt just to force another boost.

Seeing Gyarados still dancing, Malamar unleashed another Thunderbolt.

Gyarados twisted its massive body, bathed in the electric current.
The fourth Dragon Dance... was complete!!!
"Gyarados held on!!! It actually survived a second Thunderbolt! It completed the fourth Dragon Dance!!!" Mimi shouted, her voice high with excitement.
Malamar's expression, in contrast, relaxed.
After all, a Gyarados that had tanked two Thunderbolts had to be on its last sliver of health. A threat, yes, but no longer a critical one.
But how could they know that the second Thunderbolt had been completely negated by the [Aegis of the Legion]?
"Gyarados!! Freight Train Charge!!!"
Kenji yelled.
This move was a simplified version of Aqua Meteor. It skipped the "fly up and accelerate" part and focused purely on the application of Protect, charging the opponent with a fearless, all-in attitude.
(As for the name... Kenji admitted it was a bit of a gag. But unfortunately, that particular brand of truck didn't exist in this world, so no one would get the joke.)

Gyarados roared, a pale green barrier shimmering into existence in front of it. Enveloped in a shroud of water, it charged Malamar.
Its speed was incredible. It dove headfirst into Malamar's Trick Room.
As Gyarados entered the Trick Room, Malamar's speed—in accordance with the move's rules—was now far greater.
But Gyarados, which should have had its speed reversed and been slowed to a crawl, was completely unaffected! It continued its charge, its speed unchanged, slamming straight toward Malamar!!
