Chapter 75: Rematch! Gyarados vs. Absol! The Quicksilver Sash!
Kenji's mouth twitched. He looked at Goro, wondering if that match against Yuki had given the poor guy a complex.
Or maybe Goro just had no confidence in his (Kenji's) abilities.
But the next second, Goro clapped Kenji on the shoulder again, his face serious. "Go, Kenji! Yuki is strong, and that Krookodile is insane, but in my heart, you're the strongest!!"
Kenji let out a dry laugh. He felt like Goro's words were more of a generic cheer than a genuine vote of confidence.
While Kenji and Goro were bullshitting, Kenji's sixth sense suddenly went off. He felt a prickling on the back of his neck, like someone was staring at him.
Kenji turned his head. Sure enough, in a corner of the waiting area, the silver-haired Yuki was sitting with her arms crossed and legs crossed, staring right at him with her usual deadpan expression. Her eyes, however, burned with anticipation and fighting spirit.
Feeling a little creeped out by Yuki's intense stare, Kenji turned back around and focused on the ongoing matches.
A moment later, the feeling of being watched vanished.
The tournament was moving quickly. After about an hour and a half, the eighth match was up. Kenji stood up, ready to leave the waiting area.
"Go get 'em, Kenji," Goro cheered.
Kenji clapped Goro on the shoulder, gave a slight 'en', and walked out, waiting by the entrance.
A few moments later, the eighth battle ended as the third Pokémon fainted.
"And now! Let's please welcome Kenji and Yuki to the field!"
"Both Kenji and Yuki have had incredibly eye-catching performances in this Exchange Tournament! In the school's forum polls, both are high-vote candidates to win the championship! I wonder what kind of amazing battle they'll bring us!!"
As Mimi the commentator's voice echoed, Kenji and Yuki took their places in the trainer's boxes.
This time, the Grass Field was drawn.
"Battle... begin!!!"
"Go! Gyarados!"
"Absol!!"
Two red beams shot onto the field. The moment Gyarados saw its opponent, it let out a roar brimming with fighting spirit.
Clearly, its previous loss to Absol had left a deep impression.
Compared to their first match, Gyarados's level had risen to 35. Absol's level, however, hadn't changed, still standing at 44.

A sharp glint flashed in Kenji's eyes.
"Gyarados! Use Dragon Dance!!" Kenji ordered.
The next moment, Gyarados twisted its massive body, beginning the ancient, savage dance.
"Absol, Taunt!!"
Without a moment's hesitation, the instant Kenji called out Dragon Dance, Yuki ordered the Taunt.
Dark-type energy surged in Absol's eyes as it glared at Gyarados, attempting to ignite its inner rage and break its concentration.
"ROAR!!—"
But the next second, Gyarados simply roared, and its Dragon Dance completed without the slightest interruption.
Yuki's eyes widened. Her perpetually deadpan face actually showed a trace of shock.
A smirk pulled at Kenji's lips, a flash of pride in his eyes.

With one boost and one debuff, Gyarados's speed was now effectively three stages higher.
Yuki naturally wouldn't let Absol do nothing.
"Absol! Use Shock Wave!"
At her command, the sickle-like horn on Absol's head crackled with electricity. With a flick of its head, a wave of lightning shot toward Gyarados.
"Dragon Breath!!"
Faced with the homing Shock Wave, offense was the best defense. Gyarados spat out a Dragon Breath, colliding directly with the electric attack.
"BOOM!!!—"
In the collision, Absol's level advantage won out, and it shattered the Dragon Breath.
But after breaking through, the Shock Wave's power was greatly diminished. A single Iron Tail from Gyarados easily swatted it away.
