Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 – Duke’s Salvation

Chapter 23 – Duke's Salvation (Date: Cineris 6th)

The estate of Duke Solvang shimmered faintly beneath the morning mist—a grand monument to a once-great noble line, now decaying under an unseen weight. Marble pillars stood tall beneath banners of state, but the silver torches flanking the high gates burned with an eerie, sickly violet hue, casting twisted shadows across the courtyard.

Asura stood at the threshold, cloak pulled tight against the damp chill, a single vial resting in his palm. The elixir within pulsed with a warm, liquid gold—refined through Foreshadow to exact perfection. It was no longer a mere healing draft; it was a divine scalpel forged to tear out hidden rot.

"Let's finish this before tomorrow," Asura murmured, his eyes narrowing as he recalled the looming Day of Prophecy.

Inside the grand audience hall, Duke Solvang sat upon a high obsidian throne. Though his posture remained stiff and regal, the hollow pallor of his skin and the dark, bruised rings beneath his eyes betrayed a man walking on the edge of the grave. Knights in polished steel stood at rigid attention along the perimeter, while advisors lingered in hushed, nervous clusters.

When Asura's boots echoed against the polished marble floor, a sudden wave of muttering rippled through the hall.

The Duke's sharp, sunken eyes fixed instantly on him. "You've kept me waiting, boy," he rasped, his voice scraping like iron across stone. "You swore to cleanse this affliction before the prophecy's dawn. Yet here you stand at the eleventh hour."

Asura halted at the center of the chamber and gave a slight, measured bow. "Patience, Your Grace. A moment earlier and the elixir's essence would have burned out before reaching the root of your sickness."

The Duke scoffed, though a tremor in his hand betrayed his desperation. He gestured sharply to a waiting attendant. "Then let us see if your alchemy matches your arrogance."

He took the goblet containing the golden liquid and downed it in a single breath.

For a terrifying heartbeat, absolute silence seized the hall.

Then—the atmosphere shattered.

The Duke's eyes snapped wide, turning pure white as he choked, slamming a gauntleted fist against his chest. A agonizing scream tore from his throat—a sound unbefitting a ruler. Beneath his velvet tunic, a jagged, serpentine sigil flared into a blinding, cold midnight-violet.

SKRRR—!

Black, oily smoke hissed violently from his skin, twisting into writhing tendrils that clawed at the air like dying serpents. The air in the throne room grew instantly frigid, frosting over the marble floor. Knights drew their swords in a panic, unsure of what to attack as the Duke collapsed to both knees, vomiting dark, corrupted mana onto the dais.

"What—what dark witchcraft is this?!" the Commander shouted, raising his blade toward Asura.

Asura's breath caught in his throat. He recognized the pattern burning on the Duke's flesh—the jagged runes, the freezing necrotic aura, the rhythmic pulse of a parasitic parasite.

Impossible… these marks belong to the ancient dark. They're not supposed to emerge for another three years!

The mark pulsed violently, echoing a heartbeat buried deep within the shadows of the room. And in that fraction of a second, something deep within Asura's soul snapped wide open.

[System Notification: Unique Condition Met]Chosen One Sealed Talent – UnlockedTalent: The Law of Severance Effect: Allows the Chosen to perceive and sever corruption, illusion, and falsehood. Reveals Hollows and beings hidden beyond mortal sight.

The physical world dissolved.

Sound muted into a heavy, underwater hum. Asura's vision inverted—the world painted in stark monochrome, crisscrossed by glowing silver lines of absolute truth and fractured black threads of deceit. Every lie spoken in the room shimmered like cracked glass.

And winding through the center of the hall was a thick, abyssal tether of black mana—leading straight from the Duke's chest to the man standing mere inches behind the throne.

The Duke's left-hand aide. A man who had served the Solvang family for over a decade.

Asura's silver eyes locked onto him. He drew his blade, the cold steel ringing through the silent room like a death knell.

"You," Asura said, his voice dropping into an icy register that froze the blood of every guard present. "Drop the mask."

The aide didn't flinch. He adjusted his silk collar, offering a polite, confused smile. "My lord Count… the stress of the ritual has clearly clouded your mind. I am—"

"I said," Asura's eyes flared with blinding silver light, "enough."

He took a single step forward and flicked his wrist. The blade didn't strike flesh; it cut through the air, sending a wave of silver truth across the dais.

CRACK!

The visual space around the aide shattered like brittle ice. The illusion peeled away in burning flakes of black ash. The man's pale, noble features melted, exposing ash-gray skin, drawn tightly over a jaw lined with needle-like fangs. His human eyes dissolved into hollow, pitch-black voids filled with swirling crimson mists.

A Hollow. A legendary parasite from the dark eras.

Gasps of pure terror echoed through the court. Guards stumbled back, their discipline instantly collapsing into primal instinct. "Gods above—a monster in the inner court!"

The Duke turned his head slowly, staring up at his trusted companion with hollow horror. "Vane…? No… how long…?"

The creature tilted its head, a sickening sound of snapping cartilage echoing as it smirked. Its voice echoed with a double-layered, spectral hiss. "Impressive, little mortal. No human eye should possess the clarity to pierce a Hollow's shroud before the Awakening."

"Perks of being the Chosen One," Asura said coldly.

The Hollow sneered, its shadow lengthening into long, scythe-like claws. "It matters not. The Duke's vitality is already ours, and you are far too late—!"

BOOM!

The Hollow exploded forward in a blur of terrifying speed, leaving dark afterimages in the frozen air. Ordinary eyes couldn't even track the wind left in its wake.

But under The Law of Severance, the world was moving in slow motion. Asura saw every thread of intent, every muscle fiber twitching, every arc of the creature's attack mapped in lines of silver light.

Step. Pivot. Sever.

Asura shifted his stance, his silver-ranked blade igniting with radiant, lunar fire. He stepped directly into the creature's attack path, ducking beneath a claw that shattered the marble pillar behind him into dust.

With fluid, divine precision, Asura swung upward.

SLASH!

The silver edge sliced cleanly through the black tether connecting the Hollow to the world, burning through its ethereal torso.

The creature froze mid-air. Its hollow black eyes widened in utter disbelief as radiant silver cracks spread across its gray flesh like shattered porcelain.

"That blade… that light…" the Hollow shrieked, its voice breaking into a chorus of tormented screams. "The ancient power has returned…! You've interfered far too soon, Chosen One! The dark lord will—!"

BOOM!

A blinding pulse of silver light detonated from inside the creature. The Hollow disintegrated into a shower of harmless black ash, swept away by the cold wind blowing through the broken windows.

Silence returned to the hall, heavy and suffocating.

The Duke collapsed fully onto his seat, gasping for air as the dark sigil on his chest vanished completely, leaving behind healthy, uncorrupted skin. He stared at the spot where his aide had stood moments ago, his hands trembling violently.

"By the gods…" the Duke whispered, his royal composure utterly shattered. "What… what was that abominable thing?"

Asura sheathed his blade with a soft click. "A Hollow. An ancient race thought long extinct—or rather, lurking in the dark. They do not conquer by armies, Your Grace. They slip into the shadows of nobility, feeding on life energy, pulling the strings of kingdoms until the flesh rots from the inside."

The Duke's face paled further. "An anchor… he was draining me from within."

"Precisely," Asura said. "If I hadn't severed the bond today, the curse would have consumed you by morning—and spread to your entire bloodline soon after."

The Duke sat in stunned silence for several long seconds. Then, slowly, he rose from his throne. The color was returning to his cheeks, his eyes regaining their old, sharp brilliance. He looked down at the ashes on the floor, then met Asura's gaze with a heavy, profound respect.

"I have spent my life surrounding myself with advisors and guards," the Duke said softly, his voice trembling with emotion. "Yet not one of them saw the demon at my right hand. You have saved my life, my honor, and the future of Solvang."

He turned to his Commander with renewed authority. "Seal the estate! Lock down every gate and verify the soul of every servant within these walls! If any more of these parasites lurk in my household, they will be purged!"

"There is no need," Asura replied calmly. "My eyes have swept the estate. The corruption was centered solely on him. But do not lower your guard—the world outside these walls is far less secure."

The Duke exhaled deeply and motioned to a high attendant bearing a velvet cushion. Upon it rested an ornate gold ring and a heavy, wax-sealed scroll written on ancient parchment.

"Words cannot repay what you have done today," the Duke declared, his voice echoing across the quiet hall. "By my power as Duke of Solvang, I grant you the rank of Count. Your clan—Tsuyoi—is hereby recognized by the High Council with full noble standing."

He picked up the scroll and held it out toward Asura.

"With this rank comes the territory promised to you," the Duke continued, his tone turning grave. "It lies directly east of Solvang—surrounding Lake Veyrun. Once the heart of our realm's trade, it has been a blackened, cursed wasteland for over two centuries. Expeditions have failed. Horrors spawn from its depths. I ask you now: take this land, discover if this corruption stems from the same shadow we fought today, and cleanse it. The realm of Ardenia will be yours to rule."

Asura accepted the scroll. The moment his fingers brushed the parchment, the system chimed loudly in his mind:

[Quest Completed: Duke's Salvation]Reward: Noble Title – Count of Ardenia | Tsuyoi Clan Seat Established | Influence +500 Solvang City

[Hidden Discovery Notification] You have revealed the Hollow Race before their intended emergence in history.

📜 Quest: Dominion of the Drowned Vale

Quest Type: Hidden / Domain Conquest / Strategic Territory Claim

Recommended Tier: 3 (Level 300–499)

Difficulty: ★★★★★★★ (Catastrophic)

Issued By: Duke of Solvang

Objective: Reclaim the Drowned Vale, an abandoned territory east of Solvang surrounding Lake Veyrun, a massive inland body of water whose rivers flow into the coastal trade routes of the Eastern Sea. Once considered the "Heart of Commerce," this region was the lifeline between inland kingdoms and maritime trade. Two centuries ago, however, the land fell into ruin—its people vanished, its waters turned black, and monsters began spawning from the lake's depths.

Asura walked toward the grand, arched window of the throne room. Outside, pale moonlight cut through the morning haze, bathing the sprawling city of Solvang in a cold, ethereal glow.

Three years early… he thought, clenching his fist. Their network has already penetrated the highest halls of power.

He slid the scroll into his inventory and adjusted the hilt of his blade at his hip.

"If Hollows are already walking among the nobility," Asura said quietly to the quiet room, "then the war has already begun."

He turned and strode toward the heavy exit doors, his dark cloak whispering against the polished marble floor.

"Count Asura!" the Duke called out behind him. "Whatever storm comes tomorrow—House Solvang stands behind you."

Asura paused at the doorway, looking back over his shoulder, his silver eye catching the faint moonlight.

"Then pray your loyalty doesn't make you their next target," he said softly.

As he stepped out into the crisp morning air, the system interface flickered one final time across his vision:

[The Law of Severance resonates with destiny.]Enemies born of shadow will begin to stir.

The morning air felt heavy—dense with the lingering scent of ozone and ancient secrets. Tomorrow, the Day of Prophecy would dawn, and the world would change forever.

But as Asura looked out over the horizon, he smiled faintly into the dawn.

He had already rewritten fate.
