Chapter 50 - Episode 49: The Bird Strikes Back

The rushing of the air was loud in Nadia's ears as she quickly scrambled through the window. Her hair now looked wild as she quickly rolled back up the window. Sitting down in the passenger seat as she caught her breath.

"I should be mad at you for following me all day, but I'm grateful you're here, detective.", Captain Drake spoke up.

"Ha, yeah, so you noticed that.", Nadia awkwardly trailed off.

"We can always go over your transgressions later. Would you like to explain to me what's going on?"

Nadia flinched back at being called out, but did her best to ignore the embarrassment she was feeling. "So the killer has been targeting people that know Blake in some fashion. Which is why I ended up following you just in case you would be attacked today."

"Hmm, something you guys should've mentioned in the last report."

Didn't you tell us not to say anything about the church since your office is bugged?"

"Still, I would've liked to be made aware next time if my life was in danger."

Nadia raised her eyebrow. "Yes, Captain, the next time someone wants you dead, I'll make sure that you're told right away."

"Thank you!"Captain Drake replied sarcastically.

"You won't be thanking me for long, we are going to jump out the car."

"This car, the one in the air.'

"Yes", Naida nodded in reply. "I don't know where this bird is taking us and truthfully, I don't want to find out."

Captain Drake glanced out the window and saw they were about the same height as sky scrappers. He turned towards Nadia, his face pale. "You're seriously going to make us jump out of the car at this height."

"It's either you jump willingly, or I force you out the door."

"C.c..can you just give me a second?", Captain Drake stuttered, he kept rubbing his hand together.

Nadia didn't reply as she, quicker than Captain Drake could follow, reached across the driver's seat and opened the car door. A bunch of wind started whipping around through the car as they sped through the air.

Nadia with her strength pushed Captain Drake out the car before quickly following behind him. Nadia quickly caught up with the captain, whose face was full of panic. She used her right arm to wrap around his waist.

With her left hand, she started pushing the wind, slowly controlling their descent towards the ground. Without the wind loud in her ears, Nadia could hear Captain Drake's loud yelling.

"We are going to die, this can't be how I die!"He cried.

Nadia let out a small sigh, but didn't care enough to show they're now falling slowly. Doing her best to ignore the screaming and tears, she continued to inch them closer to the ground. After about another minute, Nadia made sure to land them safely on the ground feet first.

Though Captain Drake fell to the ground on his knees, crying hysterically. Nadia ignored him, focusing on the amount of feathers falling in front of them. Nadia clenched her fist hands, waiting.

As Nadia expected, the feathers soon gave way to Rayen. The stench of death followed suit, a scowl on her as she appeared. Rayen, glaring at Nadia, snapped her fingers.

Without warning, Nadia thrust her hand towards Captain Drake. A powerful gust of wind caught Captain Drake unawares as the wind pushed his body backwards. "What the hell?" He shouted. Sitting up now on the sidewalk, glaring at Nadia.

Soon that glare turned into shock as Captain Drake's car fell onto the ground. With a loud bang as it broke on impact. The tears welled up again inside of Captain Drake's eyes at the sight of the vehicle now totaled.

"MY FUCKING CAR! DEAR GOD WHY!", he cried out loud.

Nadia looked dismayed at him, just shaking her head in disappointment. Turning her attention back to Rayen, who looked at her scowling. Seeing a falling bird feather, Nadia looked up and saw the giant bird, who was carrying the car earlier, coming at her.

Nadia raised her arm, then quickly lowered it similar to a cutting motion. Shooting out the tip ‌her fingers was a blade of wind that cut the bird in half. Strangely enough, unlike before, this bird didn't break down into smaller birds.

Instead of a black sludge, landing on the ground. The black sludge traveled towards Rayen before crawling, disappearing upon contact with her leg. Oddly enough, her tattoos grew darker.

Nadia didn't have time to contemplate anything as Rayen disappeared in a bunch of feathers. Closing her eyes, Nadia focused on trying to sense anything off in the air.

"Behind you", shouted Captain Drake.

Though the warning was unnecessary as Nadia ducked down, Rayen's attack missed. Nadia threw a kick backwards but hit nothing. Straightening up, Nadia focused on the air.

She quickly opened her eyes, holding up a hand, and blocked the punch aimed at her face. Rayen's face had a look of shock as Nadia tried to punch her. Though Rayen being quicker disappeared into a bunch of feathers before reappearing a distance away.

Nadia stared down Rayen, surprisingly calm as she thought over the best form of action to take. Rayen didn't allow her any time to think as she summoned four giant birds. All circling around Rayen's body as she glared down at Nadia.

"You know, I expected you to try and save the day.", Rayen spoke, tone angry.

Nadia just shrugged in response. "What can I say? I love just playing the hero."

"Heros", Rayen spat a huge snarl on her face. "A word people use to justify their actions when it may be immoral."

"Oh, I can't believe you even understand the meaning of immoral."

"I'm going to enjoy killing!"

"You can try!"Nadia shrugged, not really caring about the threat.

Rayen didn't move, but as if reading her mind, the giant birds let out a loud caw before flying towards Nadia. Nadia clapped her hands before kneeling to touch the ground. In front of her giant slabs of rocks appeared.

Two of the birds crashed into the slabs, getting surprised by the sudden appearance of rocks. The other two birds smartly maneuvered themselves around the stone slabs.

Before the two birds that crashed into the slabs could move, spikes came out, impaling them in the head. Turning them directly into black sludge. Nadia clicked her teeth, annoyed at not being able to catch all the birds at once.

Nadia stood straight up as the final two birds ‌were coming straight at her. Lifting her hand up, the air suddenly turned bitter cold before two spikes of ice formed out the sky. Striking both of the birds, sending them crashing to the ground. Turning into black sludge..

Closing the distance, Nadia charged at Rayen. Every step she took, leaving a trail of ice behind her. Rayen was shocked at Nadia's charge and tried to at least slow her down by sending a small red bolt of energy at her.

Nadia waved her hands, a stone wall popping up out of the ground a few feet in front of her. The wall intercepted the red bolt of energy, blasting apart the stone wall. Nadia didn't let it slow her down as she kept moving.

Rayen did her best to get a good aim on Nadia, but Nadia countered by using either earth to block the attacks. Or would use wind to harmlessly redirect to the side. Rayen clicked her teeth but grew her claws preparing to fight Nadia close range.

Nadia, upon reaching her, didn't hesitate to throw a punch at her head. ‌ Rayen barely ducked out of the way of the punch. Nadia, inspecting her to duck under the punch, quickly kneed her in the face, a loud crunch coming from Rayen's nose.

Rayen stumbled backwards, clenching her face as blood began to leak through her fingers. Nadia pressed the advantage as she snapped her fingers. A stone spike coming out of the ground, aimed at Rayen's back.

Rayen was able to turn her midsection into bird feathers, letting the spike pass harmlessly through her body. As Rayen moved away from the spike Nadia was already in front of her throwing a kick that caught Rayen in the jaw.

Rayen's body fell to the ground, but was forced to roll as multiple different hands came out of the earth trying to grab her. When a new wave of hands appeared, Rayen turned to a flock of birds. Nadia took note the birds she was using this time were smaller than before.

Suddenly Nadia raised her arm, summoning a dagger into her hand. Right at that time, Rayen appeared again trying to attack. Her claws were outstretched trying to attack Nadia's head, but was blocked by the dagger.

Sparks flew up in the air, as Rayen tried to press her take. Nadia didn't panic as she raised her left hand. A stone hand appears grabbing Rayen by her face before slamming her into the ground head first.
