Kurou thought for a moment, then slowly reached toward the card in the center.
The moment of truth had arrived.
The center card began to flip over, revealing a line of text written across it:
Lightning Release: Chidori Stream (A-Rank) – An evolved form of the jutsu Chidori, this technique spreads lightning chakra across the user's entire body, emitting electrical discharges in all directions.
[System Notification]: Congratulations. You have obtained the A-rank ninjutsu: [Lightning Release: Chidori Stream].
As soon as the voice faded, Kurou noticed changes on his system panel.
Under the [Ninjutsu] tab, a new entry appeared: [Chidori Stream].
His Chakra Capacity shifted from 0/0 to 100/100.
His Ninja Rank updated from "Academy Student" to Genin (Low Tier).
Kurou could feel it clear.
There was energy now flowing through his body.
This was… chakra!
Elated, Kurou asked aloud, "Why is my chakra listed as 100/100?"
[System]: Since this is your first acquired jutsu, your chakra capacity is initialized based on the chakra cost required to cast it.
Casting [Chidori Stream] requires 80 chakra, so the system has granted you 100 as your starting value.
Kurou blinked. "Then what if my first jutsu had cost, say, 9800 chakra? Would my maximum be 10,000 right now?"
[System]: Correct. That's exactly how it works.
Immediately, Kurou's curiosity was piqued. "Then tell me… what were the other two cards I didn't choose?"
After all, people always wonder if they chose correctly. Whether to be grateful, or regretful.
[System]: Hmm… well, I suppose I could show you. But are you sure you want to know?
Kurou: "Of course."
[System]: Alright. But don't blame me if you end up crying.
Kurou: "You talk too much. Show me already."
The two remaining cards, whose golden glow had begun to dim, suddenly shimmered once more.
The card on the left flipped over first:
Wind Release: Rasenshuriken (S-Rank) – The first S-rank jutsu mastered by Naruto Uzumaki, protagonist of Naruto.
Kurou's eyes widened. He knew this jutsu all too well. In the original series, Naruto only used it at half strength and still shattered two of Kakuzu's hearts, paralyzing him completely.
If that was painful, the next one made Kurou want to curl up and cry in the bathroom.
"What about the one on the right?"
The final card slowly turned over…
Reanimation Jutsu – Edo Tensei (S-Rank Forbidden Technique)
Instantly summons the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, to fight by your side!
Kurou stared in silence.
He wanted to jump into the sea and never resurface.
He knew better than anyone how powerful Hashirama Senju was, the man who defeated Uchiha Madara, whose Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands could rival even a perfect Susano'o.
With that jutsu… forget Buggy, even a Yonko would have to be careful facing him.
If Kurou's hand had moved just three centimeters to the right…
He might already be standing at the top of the One Piece world.
But reality didn't work that way.
He had drawn an A-rank jutsu. Not bad, but compared to those two?
He could only sigh.
Sometimes, not knowing is better. Now he regretted looking.
Kurou grumbled, "You did that on purpose, didn't you?"
[System]: You've only got yourself to blame. Don't take it out on me if your luck's bad.
Kurou: "…"
More and more, he suspected that this damn system had rigged the draw from the beginning.
Later, he would discover something that confirmed his theory,
The first draw was supposed to be free.
That 1,000,000 Berry "requirement"?
That was just the system playing a prank on him.
This system… was definitely a troll with a dark sense of humor.
But no matter.
Time to test out his new jutsu.
Lightning Release: Chidori Stream!
Kurou felt chakra surge through him, flooding every cell.
Electricity danced across his body, crackling arcs of lightning illuminating the pitch-black cargo hold like a thunder god descending.
Had anyone seen him at that moment, they would've thought he was the embodiment of a storm.
With a trembling breath and a rush of excitement, Kurou withdrew the jutsu.
Now… he truly had the power to stand against this world.
And he would only grow stronger from here.
Sure enough, after the test, the Chakra display dropped to 20/100.
Casting [Chidori Stream] once had drained 80 chakra.
That meant more than half his energy was gone in one move.
Combined with the fatigue of the previous day's labor, exhaustion hit him like a wave.
It was already past midnight. Dawn was just breaking.
Kurou collapsed onto the floor and drifted into sleep.
,
When he woke again, the sun was already high.
Kurou rose from the floor and checked his panel.
His chakra had recovered fully, 100 out of 100.
With this new power in hand, he no longer planned to wait around.
No more obeying orders.
No more being a tool.
It was time to break out.
The hold was dark, but he could feel his way to the door. Gathering a bit of chakra into his fist, he stepped back, and slammed his hand into the wooden barrier.
The lowest deck door was already weak.
Empowered by chakra, Kurou's punch shattered it in one blow.
He stepped out onto the deck, eyes narrowing against the sudden sunlight.
It was blinding.
He raised a hand to shield his eyes…
And saw it.
The ship had reached land, docked at the edge of an island.
He looked toward the shore.
What he saw made his stomach tighten.
A mountain of corpses. A sea of blood.
Smoke curled from burning homes. Others still blazed in open fire.
In the distance, he could hear the frenzied howls of pirates, drunk with bloodlust.
Kurou's brow furrowed.
This place… could it be?
,
Six hours earlier, at dawn, Buggy's ship had arrived at Orange Town.
The townspeople were horrified at the sight of the pirate flag.
For forty years, they had known peace, never touched by the scourge of pirates.
They lived quiet, prosperous lives and had no experience with war.
So when the savagery of Buggy's crew descended, many could only panic.
To them, the pirate flag waving in the wind was like a harbinger of doom,
its jester-like symbol leering down like a devil's face.
Among the townsfolk, only two had the courage to stand, Mayor Boodle, and the owner of the feed store, Hoka.
They rallied the others to resist, though some chose to flee or hide.
A few… chose to fight back.
Buggy stood at the bow, arms crossed, one foot on the railing.
His voice was cold and arrogant:
"You pathetic worms how dare you lot stand against me?"
Behind him, five cannons had already been pushed to the front deck, their black iron barrels trained mercilessly on the townspeople.
