Chapter 41 - Just a Chance to Start Over

"The old man studied Alessandro for a long moment, his gaze intense and unwavering. Alessandro met his eyes, trying to project an air of honesty and sincerity.'Alright,' the old man said finally, breaking the silence. 'I believe you. Or at least, I believe parts of your story.'Alessandro's heart skipped a beat. He knew the old man wasn't completely convinced, but it was a start.'What do you mean?' Alessandro asked, his voice carefully neutral.'I mean that I think you're hiding something,' the old man said, his eyes narrowing. 'I can see it in your eyes. You're not telling me everything.'Alessandro hesitated, unsure of how to respond. He couldn't deny the old man's intuition, but he couldn't reveal too much either.'I told you what you need to know,' Alessandro said, his voice firm. 'The rest is... complicated. And it's not relevant to our situation.'The old man shrugged, his expression unreadable. 'Maybe,' he said. 'But I'm a good judge of character, Alessandro. And I can tell that you're a dangerous man. You're running from something big, something that could put me in danger too.'Alessandro remained silent, waiting for the old man to continue.'I'm willing to help you,' the old man said, his voice softening slightly. 'But I need to know that you're not going to bring trouble to my doorstep. I need to know that you're not going to use me.'Alessandro took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. He knew he had to convince the old man that they were not a threat, that they were just two people in need of help.'We're not going to use you,' Alessandro said, his voice sincere. 'We just want to be left alone. We just want a chance to start over.'"
