Pain woke me first.

Not the sharp, clean pain of a fresh wound—I'd become intimately familiar with that over the past... days? Weeks? Time had lost meaning in the darkness. No, this was different. A deep, bone-level ache that spoke of injuries already healing, flesh knitting itself back together with the stubborn persistence of Lycan blood.

But it was wrong. The healing felt wrong.

Too fast. Too cold. Like ice crystallizing in my veins instead of warm regeneration.

I opened my eyes to darkness so complete it felt alive. The air tasted of old stone and older death, thick with the copper tang of blood—mine, mostly—and something else. Something that made my wolf whimper and press against the back of my mind like a frightened child.

"Don't move." Lior's voice, barely a whisper in the dark. "The wards are still active. If they sense you're conscious—"
