Chapter 5 - The Awakening of Shadows

The air within the Hall of Awakening turned to ice.

The only remaining light came from the swirling core of black energy at the center of the altar, where Edward's body still floated. Shadows around him danced wildly, like tongues of living fire, whispering, mocking, threatening.

"Rise… heir of ruin."

The voice echoed, multiplied, coming from every direction at once.

From Edward's body, something began to take shape. The shadows thickened, forming a figure that slowly materialized in full.

Its feet struck the altar with a trembling thud, the sound of cracking stone following.

The creature stood tall, nearly twice the height of an ordinary man. Its body was black as condensed smoke, yet beneath the mist-like skin ran veins of molten crimson, alive and pulsing. Its eyes burned red without pupils, radiating hatred that defied reason.

Behind it spread two torn black wings, as if forged from shadows that refused to take solid form.

Grandmaster Altheon staggered back, his face pale.

"This cannot be… that creature should not be able to rise without a summoning ritual."

One of the young mages screamed, "What should we do? The protective seal is breaking!"

Before anyone could answer, Destrover raised one massive hand. The movement was slow, yet the power it carried was immense.

At once, a wave of black energy swept through the hall, smashing stone benches and hurling dozens of mages against the walls. Screams echoed. Dust filled the air. The very atmosphere grew heavy, pressing down like cold magma against their chests.

Silvia stared at the altar, her breath caught in her throat.

"Edward," she whispered. "You must hold on."

She stepped forward, ignoring the stones that crashed from the ceiling.

A few mages tried to stop her, but something in her gaze made them falter. There was a sharpness in her eyes, a light no one had ever seen in a village girl.

Destrover lowered his head. His voice rumbled deep and heavy, like thunder rolling within a storm.

"Who dares to defy the will of destruction?"

Silvia stopped beneath the altar, lifting her chin to face the towering figure. Her courage bordered on madness.

"I do."

The words were soft, yet they echoed through the hall.

The creature turned its blazing eyes toward her, narrowing them.

"You reek of light. Disgusting."

He lifted his hand again, ready to strike. But before the darkness could descend, the ground beneath Silvia began to tremble. A circle of runes appeared beneath her feet, glowing silver and pale blue. The air swirled around her, lifting dust and fabric into the air.

"No…" Altheon whispered, his eyes wide. "That is… the ancient sigil of the Kingdom of Eldoria."

Silvia raised her gaze. For the first time, the gentle aura that usually surrounded her vanished.

What remained was divine and sharp, like a blade of pure light.

Her chestnut hair turned slowly silver, shimmering under the returning radiance. Her eyes became bright blue, shining with fearless resolve. From beneath her garments, a symbol emerged—a twin-winged phoenix, the ancient seal of the Guardians, the secret protectors of Eldoria thought to have vanished centuries ago.

"Impossible," gasped one of the mages. "The Guardians are extinct!"

"Not extinct," Altheon said softly. "Hidden. Waiting for their time to return."

Silvia lifted her hand, and from the silver light a sword emerged, formed of pure mana crystal. It hummed faintly, like a sacred song.

"This blade is called Luminara. And today, I renew my oath."

Destrover growled, his shadowed wings trembling.

"Guardian of Light… a fragile remnant of a dying age. You will fall like the rest."

Silvia said nothing. Her gaze was fixed on Edward, still suspended in the vortex of darkness. In her eyes burned not only determination, but deep sorrow.

"I am sorry, Edward," she whispered. "You were never meant to bear this."

With impossible speed, Silvia pushed off the ground and shot upward.

A blast of wind surged through the hall as she brought her sword down upon Destrover. Light and shadow collided, sending ripples of raw energy against the stone walls.

Boom.

The first impact shook the foundations of the hall.

Mages clung to the pillars to keep from being thrown aside.

Silver light clashed with black mist, scattering sparks of energy that whirled like a storm.

Silvia landed, attacking again in a flurry of blinding strikes. Yet every slash passed through Destrover's body, which reformed instantly, as if she were cutting through smoke.

"You cannot kill a shadow," Destrover snarled, swinging his arm. A torrent of darkness struck Silvia, hurling her into the wall. Stone shattered. Blood trickled from her lips. Still, she rose once more.

"In that case," she said softly, wiping the blood from her mouth, "I will not kill you. I will seal you."

At once, she lifted her sword toward the ceiling, channeling her mana. Light from every crystal in the hall flowed toward her.

"Grandmaster Altheon! Activate the sacred seal—now!"

The remaining mages obeyed. A massive magic circle flared to life across the floor, engraved with twin-spiral symbols. Blue light rose from the ground, forming pillars of energy around the altar.

Destrover roared, the sound shaking the heavens.

"You think you can bind me again? The world has slept too long! Now it is destruction's turn to awaken!"

He beat his wings, unleashing a storm of shadows that swallowed the surrounding light. Pillars collapsed. The floor cracked. But Silvia leapt into the heart of the maelstrom, driving Luminara into the altar beneath Edward's body.

A burst of silver light erupted from the blade, piercing through the black vortex.

A deafening magical explosion followed, along with Destrover's agonized scream.

But then something strange occurred.

From Edward's body came a red glow—not Destrover's darkness, nor Silvia's sealing light. It burned like fire, yet at its center pulsed a mysterious sigil: an eye, gleaming with twin colors, red and blue.

Silvia's eyes widened.

"What… is this?"

Altheon's expression turned grim. "No… it cannot be. He is not bound only to Destrover."

"What do you mean, Master?" one of the mages shouted.

"The boy's body is not merely a vessel of darkness," Altheon said, his voice heavy. "He is also the heir of the ancient bloodline of Equilibris—the entity of balance that once imprisoned Destrover in the primordial age."

A silence fell.

Silvia's eyes widened further. "Then… he is…"

"Yes," Altheon cut in. "The descendant of the True Guardian. That is why both shadow and light react within him."

Edward's body convulsed violently, and the red-blue glow split into two faint silhouettes behind him—one with white wings, the other with black. The two forces clashed within him, fighting for control.

Silvia closed her eyes, lifting her sword once more. "Then I will place my faith… in the light within him."

She drove her sword deeper into the altar, channeling every ounce of her remaining mana.

Silver wings of aura unfolded from her back, and above her, a blazing phoenix-shaped circle appeared, etched in radiant light.

"Sealing Art: Luminara Sanctum!"

Light erupted from the altar, engulfing the hall in brilliance. The air cracked with thunder, and Destrover's scream echoed as his body dissolved, his black mist burning away, coiling toward Silvia's sword like venom being absorbed.

Yet even as he faded, his voice pierced the silence.

"You think you can bind me forever, Guardian? The world is already fractured. Your seal will only delay the inevitable."

"Then I will delay it," Silvia replied hoarsely, "with my life."

The final light exploded.

Sound vanished.

The mist disappeared.

The Hall of Awakening fell silent, leaving only ruin and the faint scent of scorched stone.

Edward's body drifted gently to the floor, limp and pale.

Luminara remained embedded in the altar, still glowing faintly.

Silvia knelt beside him, her face pale but serene. She touched his cold cheek and whispered, "You are free… for now."

Grandmaster Altheon approached, his staff trembling in his hand.

"You… are the last Guardian, aren't you?"

Silvia gave a faint smile. "Not the last. Only the one who still remains."

From the blade of Luminara came a faint echo, like a whisper within the steel.

"The seal is incomplete. Destrover still slumbers within the vessel."

Silvia looked at Edward. His closed eyes seemed peaceful, yet a faint red light pulsed beneath his lids.

"I know," she murmured.

With the last of her strength, she turned to Altheon.

"Please… watch over him, until the time comes."

Then her body collapsed beside Edward's, drained of all energy. The surrounding light faded, leaving behind only a soft shadow, as if guarding the boy's fragile life.

Outside the ruined hall, the skies above Hougwe began to change. Dark clouds rolled, yet between them broke a golden ray of sunlight, piercing through the shattered roof.

The mages stood in silence, watching the miracle unfold.

For the first time, hope flickered amid the ruins.

And in the quiet that followed, Altheon whispered, barely audible,

"If the Guardian has awakened… then a new era has begun. But are we ready… for what will come when the seal breaks again?"
