Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: BETWEEN LIFE AND SILENCE

Morning came slowly.

The sun rose like any other day, casting light over the quiet streets. But not every morning brings peace.

For Fiona, this morning arrived in silence.

A few early passers-by moved along the roadside, minding their business as the day began. One of them suddenly stopped.

"Wait… what is that?" a woman asked, pointing ahead.

They moved closer.

And then they saw her.

Fiona lay on the ground, motionless.

Her clothes were disordered, her body weak, her face pale. She did not respond when they called out to her.

"Oh my God…" another person whispered.

Without wasting time, they rushed to help.

"Quick, we need to take her to the hospital!"

Carefully, they lifted her and placed her into a nearby vehicle. There was no time to ask questions.

Only time to act.

The hospital was not far.

As soon as they arrived, nurses rushed forward with a stretcher.

"What happened?" one of them asked.

"We found her like this on the road," a passer-by replied quickly.

The medical team moved fast.

Fiona was taken inside immediately.

Machines were connected.

Voices filled the room.

"Pulse is weak…"

"Prepare fluids…"

"Check her vitals…"

Everything became urgent.

Among the staff was a nurse who suddenly paused when she saw Fiona's face clearly.

"Wait…" she said softly. "I know her."

She stepped closer, her expression changing.

"This is Fiona… she lives in my neighbourhood."

The realization hit her instantly.

Without hesitation, she stepped aside and reached for her phone.

"I need to call her family," she said.

Back at home, Fiona's mother had not slept.

All through the night, she had been restless.

Fiona had not returned.

Her calls had gone unanswered.

Her heart refused to be calm.

Fina sat beside her, equally worried.

"This is not like her," Fina said, her voice shaking. "She would never stay out without telling us."

Fiona's mother held her chest slightly, anxiety building.

"Something is wrong," she whispered.

At that moment, the phone rang.

Fina quickly picked it up.

"Hello?"

The voice on the other end was serious.

"Please… is this Fiona's home?"

Fina froze.

"Yes… who is this?"

"I'm calling from the hospital," the nurse said. "Fiona has been brought in. You need to come immediately."

Fina's heart dropped.

"What happened?" she asked quickly.

But the nurse's response was careful.

"Please come. The doctors are attending to her."

The call ended.

Fina turned slowly to Fiona's mother.

Her face had already changed.

"What is it?" her mother asked, her voice trembling.

Fina swallowed hard.

"It's Fiona…" she said. "She's in the hospital."

Before she could say more, Fiona's mother stood up immediately.

"Let's go," she said.

There was no time to think.

No time to process.

Only fear.

When they arrived at the hospital, everything felt cold and unfamiliar.

The smell.

The silence.

The waiting.

Fina rushed to the reception.

"We are here for Fiona," she said quickly.

The nurse who had called them stepped forward.

"You're her family?" she asked.

"Yes," Fiona's mother replied.

The nurse nodded gently.

"Come with me."

They were led down a quiet corridor.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

When they finally entered the room, Fiona lay on the bed.

Still.

Weak.

Connected to machines.

Her mother gasped softly.

"My daughter…" she whispered.

She rushed to her side, holding her hand tightly.

Fina stood frozen for a moment, her eyes filling with tears.

This was not the Fiona they knew.

This was someone broken by something unknown.

"What happened to her?" Fina asked, her voice shaking.

The nurse hesitated slightly.

"We are still examining her," she said carefully. "But she was found unconscious."

Fiona's mother held her hand tighter.

"Wake up… please wake up," she whispered.

Hours passed slowly.

The doctors continued their work.

Fiona remained unconscious.

Her body was there…

But her mind was far away.

Lost somewhere between fear, confusion, and silence.
