Chapter 233 - Doubts

Avengers Alliance Base.

Peter, Stark, Antonia Dreykov, and Colonel Rhodes formed a circle.

On the table in the middle of the four, lay a corpse.

The corpse wore a white coat, the kind medical personnel wear, but its face was green.

A Skrull corpse!

This corpse was discovered with Nova; four bodies were found in total.

Three of the bodies wore the clothing of medical personnel, and the remaining one wore the everyday clothes of a civilian, lying on a stretcher.

Through investigation of the surveillance footage from that day, Peter already knew almost everything.

Simply put, this alien was hit by a car, and then his alien companions, in order to avoid exposure, took him away for treatment, but they were intercepted by Nova. Nova followed them, but was attacked by them, so he killed them.

This incident wasn't discovered until that evening. The discoverers immediately reported it to the Avengers Alliance Base hotline because Nova, a recently famous Young Avenger, and several strange-looking Skrulls were present.

Peter and Stark only learned about Nova's situation then, and rushed over.

"Is Richard awake?" Stark asked, reaching out to poke at the Skrull corpse.

Peter shook his head. "Still unconscious."

"Do we know the true identities of these guys?" Stark asked Antonia.

Antonia was Taskmaster, though she no longer wore the Taskmaster gear most of the time.

Her main role in the Avengers Alliance wasn't as a combatant, but rather involved information integration and processing.

She had received such training in the Red Room, and with the super-learning ability of the Mimicry Chip, she was very capable in this area.

Antonia shook her head: "No leads for now. I pulled up S.H.I.E.L.D.'s files, but found nothing there either."

"These guys managed to get to the scene of the accident and take their companion away immediately. That's not something that can be achieved in just a day or two. They must have been on Earth for quite some time!" Peter said.

Stark also agreed with Peter's point of view. He asked, "With so much planning, they couldn't have left no trace, unless..."

Stark's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Unless what?" Colonel Rhodes asked in confusion. "Perhaps they're just a few alien remnants huddling together for warmth?"

"Is that so?" Peter pondered.

"I think so, just like Richard Rider, isn't he also a remnant from Xandar?" Colonel Rhodes said. "So I'm wondering, could this be an old feud between aliens and aliens?"

"Maybe," Stark frowned, feeling that something wasn't quite right. "Rhodes, can you go to the military and look for information? Perhaps they'll have some clues."

"Alright, I'll give it a shot," Colonel Rhodes agreed, nodding. "So, what about Richard?"

"What do you mean, what about him?" Peter asked in return.

Colonel Rhodes said, "Aliens and aliens are fighting on Earth, and it's likely not the last time. Won't that endanger the safety of us native humans? I was thinking, maybe…"

"Impossible!" Peter's face turned cold.

Stark lightly patted him.

Peter took a deep breath, suppressing his emotions, and said, "Richard is my little brother. Since I promised to take care of him, I will be responsible for him to the end. He's still a member of my Young Avengers! When Richard wakes up, I will definitely find out the truth of what happened!"

"Of course, I know Richard is a good kid, but sometimes, threats aren't measured by just one person's goodness. Peter, you are an Avenger now, not just an ordinary masked vigilante, and definitely not a kid anymore!" For some reason, Colonel Rhodes's tone was a bit intense today.

"I'll go see him," Peter didn't want to argue with Colonel Rhodes.

He was thinking that perhaps it was because they had different identities, so their perspectives on the problem were different.

He was an Avenger, but also Richard's teacher and big brother. Based on his interactions with Richard, he knew he was a good person, and a perfect candidate for leading the Young Avengers in the future.

But from Colonel Rhodes' perspective, things were different.

Colonel Rhodes was a representative of the US military, and to some extent, of the United States.

What he considered was whether Richard's existence would exacerbate social conflicts, such as those between him and Earthlings, or even certain alien races. That would obviously be something that could affect public order.

However, Peter always felt something wasn't quite right, even though he understood the situation.

Especially regarding Colonel Rhodes. Unfortunately, he hadn't had much contact with him.

The first time was during the Avengers Civil War at Berlin Airport, where he worked with Colonel Rhodes to take down a giant Ant-Man (Scott Lang). Later, he was accidentally hit by Vision's laser beam, falling from the sky and sustaining serious injuries.

After that, Colonel Rhodes regained his ability to act and participated in the interstellar expedition with them.

I haven't met Colonel Rhodes many times.

Peter turned and walked into another room.

This was the treatment room, and Nova was lying on the bed.

Peter walked to the bedside and looked at Nova. He was still unconscious with his eyes closed. Fortunately, Peter could sense that Nova's vital signs were stable, and there were no signs of weakening.

According to the examination results, he should only have suffered damage to his brain from the Alien Energy Weapon, which is why he was temporarily in a coma and couldn't wake up.

As for any danger to his life, there was none.

Which planet did those aliens come from? Why did they attack Richard? Was it really because of some old grudge?

Or did Richard discover something while tracking them? Peter frowned.

Too bad, there wasn't a single piece of information. These aliens with chameleon-like shapeshifting abilities were hiding so well?

Wait, that's not right!

Peter's mind raced.

As the saying goes: if you don't want anyone to know, don't do it in the first place.

Since these aliens appeared on Earth, and their numbers seemed quite significant, they couldn't have left no trace at all.

Especially for an all-pervasive organization like S.H.I.E.L.D., and the U.S. military, which always sticks its nose in everywhere.

But now, they really couldn't find anything.

That could only mean one thing.

That is: within S.H.I.E.L.D., there are these shapeshifting aliens! And their positions might not be low!

Because only then could they use their positions to secretly suppress any related information! But if that's really the case, it means they're up to something big!
