Chapter 161 - Boss

"Ava!"

Just as Peter was leading the Ghost on a chase around the lab, a familiar voice called out from the doorway.

It was Bill Foster!

Seeing Spider-Man in his underground lab, Bill Foster's face darkened.

"Spider-Man, why are you in my lab? Entering without permission, you're trespassing!"

"Sorry, Dr. Foster," Peter said, lightly leaping to the ceiling, where the Ghost couldn't reach, which was a good place for him to talk to Dr. Foster. "I came to find you, but you weren't here, so I had to resort to this. I hope you'll understand."

"What are you doing in my lab?" Bill Foster walked into the lab and went to his work computer desk, secretly reaching for a cabinet.

Inside the cabinet was a handgun, his weapon for self-defense.

In fact, the moment he saw Spider-Man, he prepared for the worst. He thought what he was doing had been exposed, and that's why Spider-Man was here.

After all, who doesn't know Spider-Man is a member of the Avengers these days!

And a member highly valued by Iron Man, no less!

Peter ignored Bill Foster's little movements. He'd been wandering around the lab for so long, he already knew about the small handgun stashed there.

But that thing... he could dodge a bullet from seven paces away. Within seven paces, he could subdue the person before they even pulled the trigger.

So, no threat at all, really.

Peter stuck his feet to the ceiling, standing upside down, and said, "Actually, it's about the previous research. I wanted to ask you, Doctor, if there's anything else you can add."

"I told you everything before I left," Bill Foster's eyes narrowed slightly, his already chubby face practically bunching up.

Peter shook his head slightly. "Let's put it this way, Dr. Foster, you're building the Quantum Experiment machine here for Miss Ava, right? If you can tell me about all your research findings, I wouldn't mind investing more."

"You have money?" Bill Foster asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Of course," Peter replied proudly. "I'm not as loaded as Iron Man, but I can get you tens of millions in liquid assets right away. A few hundred million? Give me a few days, and I can swing it. How's that?"

Bill Foster was clearly intrigued.

Scientific research was expensive.

Especially for someone like him, without any special status.

Many components for the Quantum Experiment were incredibly costly.

And what he was trying to do was quite groundbreaking, so getting them involved not just money, but also the right channels.

If someone like Tony Stark were to buy the same thing, he might only have to pay the original price.

But someone like him could only go through the black market, and the prices there... doubling or tripling was considered generous. Some in-demand items could be marked up seven or eight times, even ten times the original price.

And there was also the risk of buying something with defects.

You might ask, why was Hank Pym able to complete this experiment decades ago?

That's because Hank Pym was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D., practically backed by an entire country!

What couldn't he get done?

Bill Foster, on the other hand, could only build things himself. If he couldn't build it, he'd have to save up slowly.

If he could really cooperate with Spider-Man, it would be like going through the Avengers' channels.

The head of the Avengers was Iron Man, and he was part of Stark Industries!

Then, the funds and the channels would all be in place immediately!

However...

Bill Foster frowned.

Although the Sokovia Accords had passed over a year ago, he still kept them firmly in mind.

Strictly speaking, his adopted daughter, Ava, was also within the scope of the restrictions of the Accords.

Regardless of whether her abilities were actively or passively acquired, she was a superhuman.

As a superhuman, she was required to sign the Sokovia Accords; otherwise, it was considered evading supervision and was illegal.

However, both Bill Foster and Ava themselves were filled with disgust towards the authorities.

In the past, S.H.I.E.L.D. had deceived them, father and daughter, under the guise of curing them, making Bill Foster work for them on research and development, and training Ava to be a Ghost agent, staining her hands with blood!

Until S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed, the father and daughter had been foolishly deceived by those hateful politicians.

Later, when S.H.I.E.L.D. fell, Bill Foster accidentally overheard a conversation between a few people and realized they had been deceived all along!

Therefore, he took Ava and concealed their identities, leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. and deciding to research and develop a cure for Ava on their own.

Now, to make them listen to those guys' arrangements again…

"Get out of here. We don't need your help, and Ava won't become a registered hero, a dog for you!" Bill Foster's words suddenly became more intense.

Ghost, Ava, had originally stopped, but seeing this, she once again showed her intention to attack.

"Registered hero? Dog?" Peter tilted his head, somewhat puzzled.

After thinking for a moment, he realized, "You mean the Sokovia Accords?"

"What else would I mean?" Bill Foster countered.

Peter scoffed, "That thing is just a fig leaf. When have we ever listened to those politicians? The Avengers exist to speak for ordinary people threatened by evil forces, not to satisfy the personal desires or political machinations of those politicians!"

When he first signed that agreement, Peter had actually felt some respect for it.

But as his experience grew, he now understood the meaning of the agreement, and the meaning of those words Tony Stark had subtly instructed him with.

Simply put, the Sokovia Accords were bullshit; the Avengers would still operate according to their own principles.

However, this had become a tacit understanding within the Avengers, but for outsiders like Bill Foster and the Ghost, Ava, it was undoubtedly a very novel way of putting it.

"What do you mean?" Bill Foster's voice trembled slightly.

Peter shrugged, dropping from the ceiling. He adjusted his body in mid-air, landing gracefully on his feet as he walked towards Bill Foster. "Simple. Avengers. Always Avengers. We're not politicians' lapdogs. We fight for what we believe in!"

"So, Dr. Bill Foster, Miss Ava Starr, care to reconsider my offer?"

Peter reached Bill Foster, removing his mask and extending a hand.

Bill Foster looked at Peter's young, confident face, then at the offered hand, and finally made up his mind.

"Boss!"
