Chapter 113 - Chapter 114 The Aura of Hell at the Funeral

"Harry is dead!"

  "..."

A few days later, one afternoon, Hawke was busy tending to a corner of the backyard garden under Gwen's direction when Peter, dressed in a red and blue Spider-Man suit, swung in on a swing, startling Gwen.   Before Gwen could react, Peter removed his mask and spoke in a low voice.

Hawke was stunned by the news Peter brought.

Gwen, still reeling from Peter's fright, was even more stunned upon hearing this.

A moment later, Gwen finally came to her senses, looking at Peter who had plopped down on the corridor floor after speaking.   Peter held his head in his hands, appearing very sad and heartbroken.

Gwen blinked, walked to Hawke's side, looked at Peter's expression, and whispered to Hawke, "What happened?"

Hawke responded.

"It was about the day I went to Osborne."

"Oh."

Gwen remembered, then looked at Peter, who was holding his head in his hands, and said cautiously, "Peter, was it because of your blood?"

Peter looked up at Gwen and nodded.

Once again, it was different from the original plot.

In the original plot, Peter didn't give Harry his blood, which caused Harry to become the Green Goblin and ultimately die at Peter's hands.   But this time, Peter gave it.

And the result.

Harry still died.

Hawke raised an eyebrow, then looked at Peter with some puzzlement.

"That shouldn't be the case.

Before you gave it to him, didn't you tell Harry that your blood might be his poison?"

"I did."

"And then?"

"Harry called me yesterday. He was very happy, saying it was successful."

"Wait."

Hawke quickly interrupted Peter, looking at him: "Harry already had the injection yesterday?"

Peter nodded.

"Yes, he had the injection yesterday afternoon, and they said it was successful."

"And then he died this morning?"

"Yes."

"What does that have to do with you?"

Hawke shook his head, listening to the time difference, and looked at Peter, who looked guilty.

"If Harry had died yesterday after the injection, I could understand your guilt, but Harry died a day after the injection. What does that have to do with you?"

Peter, sitting on the corridor floor with his hands covering his head, was stunned by these words.

He looked up, staring intently at Hawke.

Hawke shrugged.

"Did I say something wrong?"

"But if it wasn't because of the serum, how did Harry die?"

"You're asking me?"

Hawke glanced at Peter with amusement, then asked curiously, "Who found Harry?"

Peter got up from the floor.

"Felicia."

"The assistant?"

"Yes."

Peter nodded. "Felicia also lives at the manor.

This morning, she saw that Harry hadn't come downstairs yet, so she sent a maid to wake him up. When the maid opened the door, she found Harry dead in bed."

Hawke caught the key phrase.

"Dead?"

"I didn't ask for details. I originally called Harry to check on his recovery, but Felicia answered. She told me not to tell anyone about it yet, but I was too confused, so I thought of you."

"You really can't tell anyone."

Gwen, who had been quietly listening to their conversation, said to Peter, "Harry finally took over Osborn Industries and stabilized Osborn's stock price. If news of Harry's death gets out now, it will be a huge blow to Osborn's industries."

And this huge blow is not just any huge blow.

As everyone knows.

The Osborn family suffered from a hereditary disease that even modern medicine struggles to diagnose, and the family had always been small.

Harry's grandfather had only three children, but it was Norman Osborn who truly brought the Osborn family to prominence.

Norman Osborn had only one son, Harry.

But.

Harry was unmarried and had no offspring.

Now that Harry was dead, it was questionable whether Osborn Industries could continue to be called Osborn.

Sure enough, three days later, after news of Harry Osborn's sudden death was reported, Osborn Biotechnology's stock price plummeted.

However, after three days of preparation, a series of statements from Osborn Biotechnology stabilized the downward trend somewhat.

Although it was still falling, at least it wasn't a precipitous drop.

Meanwhile,Harry Osborn's funeral was being held at the Osborn family cemetery.

Hawke and Gwen, as Harry's friends, received an invitation from Felicia and once again visited the Osborn family cemetery located behind Osborn Manor.

The funeral was presided over by Felicia,

Norman Osborne's adopted daughter.

This fact was only revealed yesterday by the resourceful media, and there are also rumors that Harry Osborne left a will stipulating that all his assets would be inherited by Felicia should anything happen to him.

"This isn't just hearsay."

"It's true."

Peter, standing with Hawke and Gwen at the funeral, said softly, "I know about this."

Gwen glanced at Peter.

Peter explained, "For a while after Norman Osborn's death, Harry was in a bad mood.

He told me that he didn't trust anyone in Osborn and always felt like someone wanted to harm him, so he made a will immediately, with Felicia as the beneficiary."

Gwen whispered, "So, Felicia really is Harry's sister?" Peter nodded, "Yes, she was adopted by Norman when she was little, but it wasn't made public.

Harry told me before, and told me not to tell anyone."

Gwen nodded in understanding, then looked at Hawke beside her.

Hawke's attention wasn't on that.

Gwen followed Hawke's gaze to the coffin where the final farewell ceremony was taking place not far away, and gently nudged Hawke.

"Hawk?"

"Hmm? Hmm."

Hawke came back to his senses and looked at Gwen, "What's wrong?"

Gwen blinked.

"What are you looking at?"

"The coffin."

Hawke didn't hide anything.

He thought of the somewhat familiar scent he'd smelled when he visited Osborne Manor a few days ago.

However, at that time, he followed the scent through the annex and saw the Osborne family cemetery, so he didn't look any further.

Because he had already found the source of that familiar scent.

Norman Osborne's grave.

He had assumed the scent was the scent of Norman Osborne's death.

But now, that scent of death had reappeared as he attended this funeral.

And this time, the scent wasn't emanating from Norman Osborne's grave, but from the coffin containing Harry Osborne's body.

Hawke thought for a moment, then looked at Peter.

"Do you know the cause of Harry's death?"

"Yes."

Peter nodded and said softly, "Retroviral hyperplasia, the Osborne family's hereditary disease.

Felicia said that after the serum injection that afternoon, he did recover, but then."

After these past few days, Peter was no longer as guilty as before.

Because Harry didn't die from his own blood.

His blood did indeed heal Harry.

That's a fact.

As for why it suddenly relapsed, and why it recurred so rapidly, that can only be said to be something that current science cannot explain.

Just then,Mary, who hadn't spoken until now, reminded the two, "The farewell has begun."

Hawke and Peter looked over and saw the guests who had risen from their seats also getting up, preparing to see Harry one last time.

Harry, dressed in a black suit, lay in the coffin with his eyes closed, seemingly asleep.

But when Hawke walked to the coffin, he glanced at Harry, and when his gaze fell on the wisp of black energy gathering between Harry's brows, he finally remembered why he felt a sense of familiarity with this aura of death.

It wasn't Norman Osborn.

It was Mephisto!

On the African savanna, after he killed the demon Hulk, the projection of Mephisto that remained in the same spot carried this wisp of deathly energy.

But because several months had passed, and the aura of death was indeed very faint, he hadn't immediately thought of it.

Now when Hawke looked at the wisp of black energy between Harry's brows, he finally understood.

This wasn't the aura of death.

It was clearly the aura of a demon.

Hawke thought to himself, but didn't show it.

He calmly followed Peter, who was walking ahead, and after taking one last look at Harry, he walked down the left side.

Half an hour later,as Harry's coffin was closed and buried, the funeral came to an end.

Hawke, Gwen, Peter, and Mary didn't stay for the after-party, but chose to go home.

After all, it was getting late.

Hawke and Gwen first dropped Peter and Mary off at the Queens subway station, then drove towards Manhattan.

Gwen watched Hawke drive into Manhattan before speaking, looking at Hawke: "Okay, go ahead."

Hawke smiled, glancing at Gwen: "You saw my expression?"

Gwen shrugged: "Please, if I didn't know you, how would I have found you alone in Maryland? What did you find?"

Hawke smiled slightly, not hiding anything.

"A demon."

"What?"

"I suspect Osborn's family's hereditary disease isn't an illness, but rather because of a demon."

  "…"

Gwen paused, then seemed to realize something, and said thoughtfully, "Peter just said that Harry's illness was indeed cured at first, but then it relapsed, and very rapidly.

If what you're saying is true, it does sound a bit like the demon sensed something and simply decided to kill him."

Hawke shrugged.
