Chapter 78 - Chapter 79 The Vanished Hawk!Unnamed

Something terrible has happened.

Another major event has occurred in New York City.

Well-informed media personnel rushed back to their newspapers almost immediately, and by the time daylight broke, brand new headlines were already flashing across the page.

『The New York Times: "Military Raids Civilian Cemetery on Christmas Eve, Triggers Massacre, Calvin Cemetery Turns into Slaughterhouse!"』

『The Wall Street Journal: "Another Disaster for General Ross, Calvin Cemetery Tragedy Possibly Due to a Mistake in Hunting Hulk?"』

『Global Observer: "Seventy-Seven Dead in Horrific Circumstances, Helicopter Turns into Fireball, Countless Tombstones Shattered, What Did the Federal Military Do!"』

The events at Calvin Cemetery could not be concealed.

Sure enough, countless New York City residents woke up to the headlines, especially those who had buried their deceased loved ones in Calvin Cemetery; they felt as if the sky had fallen.

They rushed to Calvin Cemetery as quickly as possible.

But Calvin Cemetery had already been sealed off by the arriving military reinforcements.

Facing countless New Yorkers shouting that their loved ones were inside and demanding entry, the guards remained unmoved.

Upon receiving orders, they even loaded their guns and kept a close watch on the cordon. If anyone dared to cross the line, they would open fire without hesitation.

A joke.

If they couldn't defeat last night's monster, couldn't they at least bully you commoners?

Military-civilian harmony?

That doesn't exist in the Union.

Even when disasters occur across the country, the military's intervention isn't for relief, but for suppression.

The crowd was furious, immediately unfurling banners and protesting against the soldiers across the cordon.

The New York City mayor was also in a state of utter chaos.

Manhattan taxpayers, after seeing this news, recalled the losses caused by the military's previous unauthorized actions.

Those with connections called the Pentagon directly, while those without connections but with some money called the New York City mayor.

Just one sentence.

"Can't they do it? If they can't, they're fired. They need to replace them with a capable mayor. "

The New York City mayor was mentally cursing the military a thousand and eight hundred times over.

The military had always been reckless, but no one could have imagined they'd act this recklessly.

Turning a cemetery into a battlefield, countless tombstones reduced to dust, and many more smashed to pieces?

Good heavens.

Were they on a mission, or were they dancing on people's graves?

The ashen-faced mayor immediately held a press conference, making no subtleties or allusions, directly demanding an explanation and account from the Pentagon regarding this incident.

The Pentagon said they couldn't hear it and gave no response whatsoever.

Washington was quiet.

Quantico was quiet too.

At least on the surface.

But Gwen, who was on vacation on Long Island with her family, couldn't stay quiet after seeing this message.

Calvin Cemetery?

Last night?

Hawke.

Gwen quickly took out her phone and dialed Hawke's number.

The phone was off.

Gwen's heart skipped a beat. Just then, on the TV in her bedroom, the beautiful anchorwoman was also reporting on the events at Calvin Cemetery last night.

There was no way around it.

News has a time limit; if you don't report it, other TV stations will, and then the ratings will belong to someone else.

So, for the sake of ratings and advertising revenue, TV stations ignored all those calls from Washington trying to persuade them to play dead, afraid of being a step behind, and raced against time to broadcast the exclusive photos and news materials obtained by their resourceful reporters.

When the beautiful TV presenter showed Gwen a photo of Spider-Man taken at Calvin Cemetery that she had just received for $500, a name immediately popped into her head:

Peter Parker!

Gwen's eyes lit up, and she picked up her phone again, found Peter's number, and dialed directly.

This time the phone wasn't off, and it was answered quickly.

"Gwen."

"Peter, was it Hawk last night?"

Gwen went straight to the point: "Did you see where Hawk went?"

Peter on the other end of the line was silent for a moment, then scratched his head: "I just saw the news about Calvin Cemetery, Hawk was last night..."

Gwen felt a throbbing pain in her upper trigeminal nerve.

"Peter!"

"Uh…"

Peter opened his mouth, hesitated for a moment, "Hawk is alright. By the time I got there, the battle was over."

After subconsciously answering Gwen's question, Peter couldn't help but ask, "Did Hawk tell you my identity?"

Gwen breathed a sigh of relief after hearing that Hawk was safe, and then, listening to Peter's confusion on the phone, she said in a low voice, "I'm not stupid. You've changed so much, and you've even become friends with Hawk. It's not hard for me to guess that you're Spider-Man."

Peter nodded subconsciously after hearing Gwen's explanation.

"Where is Hawk now? I can't get through to him on the phone."

"I don't know."

"Peter!"

"I really don't know."

Peter quickly explained, "Hawk left too quickly. He only asked me if I was going to stop him. I didn't have that intention, so I made way for him, and then he disappeared."

As he spoke, Peter asked curiously, "By the way, Gwen, I thought Hawk went on vacation to Long Island with you. What was he doing at Calvin Cemetery last night?"

Gwen thought for a moment and pursed her lips.

"Hawk had a sister named Anya, who passed away in an accident in 2009 and was buried in Calvin Cemetery. Every Christmas, Hawke goes there to spend time with his sister."

"She really is his sister,"

Peter exclaimed.

Gwen raised an eyebrow.

"What's wrong?"

"Hawk asked me before he left what I would do if someone vandalized Uncle Ben's tombstone."

"Anya's tombstone was vandalized?"

Gwen's heart skipped a beat, and her voice involuntarily rose.

Peter quickly said, "No, no, the tombstone looks fine, it wasn't damaged, it's just..."

Hearing Peter's hesitant voice, Gwen's heart skipped a beat again.

"Just what?"

"Uh..."

Peter recalled what he had seen behind the tombstone when Hawk left: "A section of the grave next to it was blown up, and it accidentally affected Anya's grave."

Damn it.

After hearing Peter's answer, only this thought remained in Gwen's mind.

No one understood Hawk's sister's importance to him better than she did.

If Anya hadn't been resurrected, even if she had married Hawk, he would probably have chosen to spend Christmas with his sister Anya.

No exaggeration.

And now Gwen came to her senses, her voice filled with disbelief.

"Anya's grave exploded?"

"What? No, no, no."

"Peter! "

"It didn't explode, just the back mound was impacted, some of the soil splashed out, but I don't think the coffin or anything is exposed."

  "..."

The mound exploded?

What's the difference between that and the grave exploding?

Gwen's lips twitched.

Just then,Helen's voice rang out from outside.

"Gwen!"

"Coming."

Gwen snapped out of her daze, responded loudly, and then said to Peter on the other end of the phone, "Remember to contact me if you have any news about Hawke." She then hurriedly hung up the phone, composed herself, opened the door, and went out.

As she walked down the stairs of the holiday villa, she asked, "Mom, what's wrong?" Before she finished speaking,Gwen saw a familiar face as soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs.

Hmm.

Very familiar.

Natasha, whom she had knocked unconscious with a stick that day, was now standing at the door, smiling and talking to her mother, Helen.

Upon seeing this, Gwen's heart skipped a beat again.

Helen looked at Gwen coming downstairs and said with a smile, "Natasha said you lent her the car, and she's here to return it."

Natasha smiled and greeted Gwen as she approached.

"Good morning, Gwen."

".Good morning."

Gwen was silent for a moment before responding, then said a few words to her mother before following Natasha out of the house.

A bright yellow Corolla, repaired and looking brand new, was parked quietly in front of the house.

"Go check it out, I didn't damage your car, you know."

  " ..."

Gwen didn't say anything, opened the driver's door, and got in.

Natasha also got into the passenger seat and closed the door.

Gwen took a deep breath and looked at Natasha.

"Are you here to kill me?"

"What?"

Natasha was taken aback at first, then shook her head with a smile, "No, no, no, how could that be? You didn't kill me then, how could I kill you?"

Gwen looked at Natasha: "But you sent people to kill Hawke."

Natasha shook her head again: "Last night's attack wasn't our doing. In fact, if what happened last night hadn't happened, I wouldn't be here to meet you now."

The incident at Calvin Cemetery last night caught the entire city of New York off guard.

But S.H.I.E.L.D. was equally caught off guard.

Maria Hill never expected that while she was still collecting data and figuring out how to conduct the first peace contact, the military would suddenly intervene without any regard for military ethics.

Good grief.

You did a pre-war assessment, and you just jumped in like this ?

When Maria Hill learned of this, in a flash, she didn't have time to think about why the military was acting so recklessly, or even how they knew about Hawke.

She immediately contacted Natasha, who had just returned from Tennessee the day before and hadn't had a chance to rest, instructing her to immediately drive the repaired yellow Corolla from New York Shield to find the only person they could currently locate—Gwen.

Natasha looked at Gwen with a serious expression: "Gwen, we need to know Hawke's location now. If this gets out of hand, it'll be difficult to handle."   ...
