Picking up Kasiya and Malaya from the airport, the group stopped by Moseley's commercial street on the way back to browse and shop. With the holiday season approaching, the crowds were thick, and the smart shopping carts with purchase guidance had already been claimed by customers.
Mallaya connected her handheld terminal to the shopping district's smart system. She walked ahead with Qin Wenjing, discussing what else they needed to purchase as they went.
Kesiya wasn't very familiar with Qin Wenjing yet, and even Li Haojun noticed she wasn't as socially adept as her younger sister. So she quietly followed behind Li Haojun.
Kesiya wore the same coat she had on during their last trip to Nevada, which inevitably brought back memories for Li Haojun. He found himself reflecting on their time apart, and so he kept glancing at Kesiya from time to time.
Kesiya, however, would always respond with a smile, saying nothing. This left Li Haojun shaking his head repeatedly, pursing his lips in a wry smile, sighing to himself and wondering what on earth had gotten into him.
The festive atmosphere thickens along the commercial street, where twinkling lights adorn the trees lining the roadside green belts. Christmas trees stand tall at every shop entrance. The bustling street teems with people, creating a lively scene.
A department store stood ahead. Qin Wenjing and Malaya chattered away, then linked arms and turned left into the store without so much as a word to the two trailing behind. Li Haojun seized the moment to grab Kesiya's hand, quickening her pace to keep up with the pair ahead. Her beaming smile cut through the winter crowd.
The first floor of the mall always sparkles with jewel-like brilliance, though what's sold here are mass-market goods made from synthetic materials. The aura of rare luxury has long faded, replaced by the everyday bustle of ordinary life.
Slowly strolling through the jewelry gallery, I admired the luster of different materials, the variety of design styles, and the clash of diverse cultural influences.
At the end of the gallery, Qin Wenjing turned around and looked back at Li Haojun, grinning as she asked,
"Would you like to buy something for your children?"
"No need to spend money," Malaya said, tugging at Qin Wenjing's arm.
"Sure," Li Haojun had already picked out a few models she liked best, and while browsing earlier, she'd discussed their respective preferences with Kesiya.
So the four of them retraced their steps together. Li Haojun had already decided to buy Kesiya that freshwater pearl necklace she liked, though he wasn't sure which piece Malaya and Qin Wenjing had picked out while walking ahead earlier.
The gallery displayed necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, and various other accessories. Li Haojun felt a multi-layered gold-plated necklace would perfectly complement Malaya's outfit for the day.
Seeing the two of them hesitating, he made a point of recommending this necklace before they reached it.
Indeed, this design features a delicate, multi-layered gold structure. At first glance, it appears understated, but upon closer inspection, the necklace reveals a gradient of gold hues that shift with the angle of light—transitioning through shades of gold, brown, dark green, indigo, and purple. Irregularly set pavé diamonds sparkle like stars in the night sky, their density gradually decreasing as they cascade diagonally through the necklace's layers, evoking the Milky Way.
Li Haojun scrutinized the product name: "zanchika2084318836C." and thought to himself, What kind of nonsensical naming is this? He glanced at Malaya—her slender frame, the budding vitality of youth, her intelligent yet mischievous little head, and that haughty high ponytail. She radiated an aura of distant, untouchable beauty, like a star in the night sky.
At this thought, Li Haojun asked softly,
Malaya, what do you think of this design? If I were to name this piece, I'd never use that cold string of letters. I'd rather call it 'Starlit Galaxy.' Look at the gradient of the necklace's metal—it resembles the sky from dusk to deep night, with those delicate diamonds like stars dotting the heavens.
He looked up into Malaya's eyes again, wondering what she thought.
Only then did Li Haojun notice out of the corner of his eye that he was being playfully surrounded and watched by Kesiya and Qin Wenjing, feeling slightly awkward.
Qin Wenjing immediately teased,
"Hey, look at this! The arrangement of these diamonds forms the Big Dipper. Wear it, Malaya, and you'll never lose your way."
Li Haojun hastily shook his head and waved his hands, saying,
"Stop it, stop it,"
Kesiya said nothing, smiling as she looked at her sister.
After laughing, Qin Wenjing seemed to recall something. She gazed into the air for a moment before turning to Malaya, her hand resting on her shoulder.
"My dear sister," she said earnestly, "every time he travels, you arrange his itinerary. Each time he returns safely, I am truly grateful to you."
"Rest assured, I'll bring him back to you safely," Malaya replied.
After browsing the jewelry and cosmetics on the first floor and the women's clothing on the second, Li Haojun intended to continue upstairs to look at children's toys—that youthful heart of his seemed to have never truly faded.
"We'd better not go," Malaya unexpectedly declined his suggestion, her gaze fixed firmly on Li Haojun as she spoke. Though unsure of her meaning, Li Haojun followed her advice, and the group left the department store.
Back on the street, the sun was already setting in the west. On her way back along the pedestrian mall, Kasiya passed the barbershop she'd walked by earlier and suddenly had a new idea—she was determined to get a new hairstyle. A woman's mind, truly, is hard to fathom.
Kathy, sitting in the salon chair, had actually chosen a short hairstyle. Li Haojun stood behind her, facing her through the mirror and asked,
"Are you really going to cut your long hair?" He knew how long it had taken her to grow it out, so he asked her with genuine concern.
She smiled, feeling confident, and after adjusting the settings on the panel, clicked OK.
Surrounding her were multiple robotic arms, but no scissors or similar human tools—instead, they were equipped with built-in blades serving the same purpose. First came the dry shampoo foam, then shaping and trimming, followed by the final rinse to remove hair debris and the dry shampoo foam. Everything was done with such efficiency and speed.
Kesiya opted for a face-framing bob with a subtle C-shaped curve at the ends, revealing her neckline. Her bangs were parted in a 3:7 ratio, swept back over the left ear and cascading forward along the curve of her jawline. The right side of the fringe partially veiled her right cheek, its lower edge curving forward to perfectly complement the jawline. Within the shadow cast by the fringe, her blue eyes appeared even more profound.
Her new short hairstyle, paired with the plush, wide collar of the white faux fur top she wore today, accentuated the close-fitting freshwater pink pearl necklace adorning her neck.
Stepping out of the barbershop, sunlight illuminated Kasiya's smiling face. Her younger sister exchanged a knowing smile with her before dashing past her to catch up with Qin Wenjing ahead, leaving the two of them behind.
Back at the parking lot, Li Haojun opened the rear passenger door for Kesiya, while Qin Wenjing invited Malaya to sit in the front passenger seat. She herself remained in the rear seat diagonally behind the driver. In the rearview mirror, she could see Li Haojun's eyes—only today, two young women were riding along, invited at her own suggestion.
On the way back, traffic was sparse. The setting sun stretched the shadows of withered trees across the road with its last, warm glow. Li Haojun drove smoothly along the winding road. The fading light streamed through the windows, sometimes dazzling, sometimes outlining Malaya's silhouette. Everyone he cared about seemed to surround him in that moment, like a beautiful dream. The only reminder that this was real came from the rearview mirror, where Tan Wenjing's smiling face tilted slightly, her eyes gleaming with a pride he'd never seen before.
She felt relaxed and content. Li Haojun realized he had never seen Qin Wenjing in such a state before—as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
Back home, as planned, the sky had turned pitch black, with only a faint purple streak lingering on the horizon. In the winter night, the brightly lit house seemed all the more warm.
Malaya eagerly went to the kitchen to help Qin Wenjing prepare the Christmas Eve feast, leaving Kasiya and Li Haojun to decorate the Christmas tree in the living room.
Kesiya slipped off her coat, revealing a strapless beige wool sweater beneath, paired with the same figure-flattering blue jeans. Today, however, her neatly trimmed short hair and the pearl necklace adorning her delicate pink neck were exceptionally captivating. Li Haojun wanted to give her a hug, but the thought remained just that—no action followed. Instead, he stood there grinning foolishly before asking,
Long time no see. How have you been lately?
Kesiya didn't answer him; she just looked at him and smiled faintly.
Come on, let's decorate the Christmas tree.
She said nothing and made no small talk, instead concentrating intently as she and Li Haojun discussed and selected different ornaments, gifts, or star-shaped lights to hang in various spots—some higher up even requiring a ladder.
Kesiya was very proactive, always climbing up herself. Li Haojun stayed below to steady the ladder for her. Sometimes Kesiya would ask Li Haojun to step back and check if it was hanging crooked.
As she finished decorating, Kesiya looked at the Christmas tree, hesitated for a moment, and muttered to herself,
Why favor only one side while neglecting the other? Her voice carried a hint of sorrow.
The two had been busy decorating the Christmas tree facing the living room. Only half of the tree was adorned, specifically the side illuminated by indoor lights. The opposite side, facing the window, remained shrouded in darkness, devoid of decorations, and looked particularly bleak.
Kesiya picked up some decorations and walked behind the tree. Li Haojun helped carry all the remaining ornaments over. After hanging the last decoration, Kesiya turned to face Li Haojun. Her face showed no festive joy; instead, she spoke softly in the same plaintive tone as before,
Actually, this is my first time spending Christmas in someone's home.
Her eyes and her words made Li Haojun feel a pang of sadness. He gently pulled her into his arms, wanting to give her more warmth.
On the Christmas tree, the twinkling lights faintly illuminate the shadows behind it, casting a faint silhouette of two figures embracing within the glass window. Layered atop the dead branches of the garden flowerbed, hidden within the refracted light of the evergreen branches, it remains unclear whether it is real or illusory.
In the kitchen preparing Christmas Eve dinner, Tan Wenjing, though assisted by Malaya, didn't assign the little girl any substantial tasks. She merely gave her a few symbolic chores to keep her occupied and prevent her from standing awkwardly by with nothing to do.
Qin Wenjing cherished her youth. Though modern technology could reverse the aging process, the people and events that once surrounded her could never be reclaimed. She envied Malaya's youth, delighting in seeing her beside Li Haojun as if witnessing her own reflection from years past. Unable to fulfill her own unfulfilled desires, she could only project them onto others, hoping to see them realized anew.
At that moment, Kesiya also came into the kitchen, taking Tan Wenjing by the arm.
"Emily, take a break. Let them help you with that." With that, she pulled Emily away, leaving only Li Haojun and Malaya behind.
Li Haojun continued preparing the remaining ingredients while keeping an eye on the turkey in the oven. Malaya watched silently, smiling all the while.
Li Haojun felt a twinge of embarrassment, wondering if the young girl had seen him earlier. He took the initiative to strike up a conversation, breaking the awkward silence.
Thank you both for coming. Actually, it was Emily who thought to invite you.
"Don't you want to?" Malaya interrupted Li Haojun with a sudden remark.
"Oh, I wanted to, but I didn't expect her to be so forgiving," Li Haojun said with a hint of shame, looking down at his hands as he continued preparing the ingredients.
"To be honest, I don't even know myself," Li Haojun said, turning to look at Malaya.
Forgetting the past doesn't mean forgetting who you are. You're still you. Malaya's smile vanished as she spoke coldly.
Seeing that Li Haojun didn't respond and looked a bit puzzled, Malaya explained again,
Your inner feelings are still you.
"Oh," Li Haojun nodded slightly as he looked at Malaya. Then he glanced back at Kasiya and Qin Wenjing bathed in the bright light of the living room. Then he looked back at Malaya before him. She always possessed a maturity beyond her years, something elusive for a girl barely out of her teens. It seemed as though she could see through his thoughts—that he harbored feelings for them, yet held back, constrained by his lingering attachment to Emily.
"Would you leave Emily for Kesia?"
No, I can't do that. She was there for me when I was at my most vulnerable. I can't do that.
"For Kesia and me?"
" Malaya, why are you asking this?"
"I was just asking, curious to hear your answer," Malaya said with a faint smile.
"I can't do anything to betray her. She has no other family besides me, and she's a deeply emotional person. All these years, she's lived with me—even when I was unconscious. A person who can't speak or move, with no certainty of waking up—she still couldn't bear to leave me. How could I possibly do that?" Li Haojun glanced at Malaya's expression as he spoke, then softened his tone as he continued.
How could I possibly leave her alive?
"Yeah, I get it."
Li Haojun looked at Malaya and wanted to say, "Wouldn't it be nice if we just lived together like a family?" But then he thought, maybe he was overestimating himself. Those sisters were young and beautiful—what right did he have to monopolize their youth? Once he settled into his job here, someone would naturally come along. He'd better rein in his overflowing affection. With that thought, he casually asked,
"We haven't seen each other in months. What do you do for fun when you have free time?" Immediately after asking, Li Haojun realized it was inappropriate—asking a young woman what she does in her spare time was rather improper. He hastily added,
What are your hobbies?
"Hobbies? Heh heh heh, cooking, I suppose."
Li Haojun was taken aback and surprised upon hearing this, and quickly turned to ask,
"Isn't your sister taking care of you?"
I don't like what she makes. To be honest, she's not very good at cooking.
Li Haojun recalled Kesiya's past work and studies. Admittedly, the girl could be a bit clumsy at times, but she was endearing. Thinking of this, he smiled and asked Malaya,
"So what do you think your sister is good at?"
"What do you think?" Malaya countered with a smile, leaving the question hanging. She didn't leave Li Haojun awkwardly standing there after her retort, but continued,
"In my free time, I play some computer games."
Li Haojun perked up at the mention, as he also enjoyed certain types of computer games, and quickly asked,
"What kind?"
Racing, a compilation of high-speed Grand Prix highlights, but I only have a basic steering wheel with no feedback and accelerator/brake pedals.
"Oh, I have this game too," Li Haojun perked up, setting aside what he was doing and eagerly asking,
Which race car and track do you like best?
"Mm, a Maserati 250, the Monte Carlo circuit."
Li Haojun gave a thumbs-up with both hands, but before he could speak, the carrot and potato rolled down and smacked against his feet. Seeing this, both of them laughed. Li Haojun didn't bother to pick them up and hurriedly added,
"Tasteful!"
Maraia pursed her lips, as if smiling sweetly.
"I play that game too. I've got a racing simulator setup. Want to give it a try?"
"Alright," Malaya murmured softly, beginning to help arrange and plate the prepared ingredients. As she bent over, her high ponytail slid down her shoulder to her cheek, the necklace glinting through her hair like a star twinkling in the night sky—was she a girl brought by the stars? The thought flashed through Li Haojun's mind. When he refocused on her face, she was calmly going about her task, arranging the prepared ingredients on plates before carrying them to the dining table. Watching her retreating figure, her slender form held a certain allure, but Li Haojun dared not, nor would he entertain any improper thoughts.
Over at Kesiya's end, Tan Wenjing seemed to have finished her chat with her and came to the kitchen to check on the progress. The turkey probably needed a bit more roasting. Turning back, her eyes met Li Haojun's. Li Haojun merely lifted the corners of his mouth slightly and murmured softly,
"I feel very happy." After speaking, he gazed intently into Tan Wenjing's eyes.
Qin Wenjing paused for a moment, momentarily taken aback, then gave him a gentle hug before joining him in the kitchen to finish what they had started.
Outside the living room window, night had deepened. Inside, the bright lights and the background music from the Christmas Eve livestream filled the space with a warm holiday atmosphere. Malaya placed the ingredients on the dining table and turned to see Kasiya giving her a knowing look, signaling her to look at the couple in the kitchen. Malaya understood immediately and didn't go over to disturb them. Instead, she sat down next to her sister and began stuffing riddle notes into the colorful eggs hanging on the Christmas tree.
"Are you still going to share him?" Malaya asked Kasiya in an almost inaudible whisper.
"Hmm,"
"You see, he won't leave her."
"It's okay, I never wanted to keep him all to myself."
"Are you sure it's him?"
"Hmm, I remember how it felt being with him."
"A lot of memories?"
"It's not that—it's just this familiar feeling, something buried deep in my memory, but when I see him or get close to him, it suddenly comes flooding back."
So what are your plans for the future?
Heh, do you think this is okay to keep going? Got any better ideas?
Oh, sorry, let's just leave it at that for now. I hadn't thought that far ahead—I haven't even...
"Ha ha ha," the sisters whispered softly as they sat before the Christmas tree in the living room.
Before long, the feast was ready. Li Haojun brought the steaming hot turkey to the table, and Tan Wenjing followed with the side dishes.
"Thank you for preparing such a sumptuous dinner," Kesiya said gratefully as she pulled her sister over.
"Please take a seat. We've all been looking forward to having you join us," Tan Wenjing said, glancing at Li Haojun.
"Please, have a seat," Li Haojun said as he served the two young women slices of turkey.
Malaya smiled as she gracefully accepted the tray with both hands, while Kasiya shifted her hips forward on the chair, reaching out her hands early and tilting her face upward to look at Li Haojun.
Li Haojun handed it to her with a smile, saying nothing, his eyes filled with the sight of Kasiya's beaming face.
The small dining table now held four people, making it feel a bit crowded, yet less lonely. Across from him sat Malaya, with Kesiya to his right and Qin Wenjing to his left. Beneath the table, Li Haojun gently stroked Qin Wenjing's thigh with his left hand.
Qin Wenjing glanced at him briefly before busily introducing the prepared fruits and vegetables to the two young ladies, inviting them to add toppings according to their own tastes.
Li Haojun carved the turkey into different cuts for everyone—some parts crispy and charred, others tender and juicy. To be able to provide these two children with some warmth of family under this roof.
"This is cranberry sauce, and I made the turkey gravy. Try it and see if it suits your taste," Qin Wenjing said as she slid the condiments across the table toward them.
Malaya thanked her while methodically sampling the food. Kasiya merely smiled and nodded in acknowledgment, her gaze drifting from Tan Wenjing to Li Haojun between bites.
After taking a few bites, Li Haojun suddenly remembered something. He got up, went to the kitchen, and brought back black pepper, mustard, and honey. He said,
"Here are some condiments. See if you need anything else?"
"Alright, no need to trouble yourself. This should be enough," Kasiya said to Li Haojun, then nodded to Qin Wenjing.
"Ah, Haojun, the juice in the fridge," Qin Wenjing said, then turned to smile at Kesiya and Malaya.
"We will no longer serve alcoholic beverages to minors."
"No, no, we don't drink," Malaya said with a smile.
"If you'd like to have a drink, please help yourselves. We'll stick to juice," Kasiya said as well.
In the dining room, cheerful chatter filled the air. In the living room, a live TV channel broadcast festive interviews and celebrations from downtown Moseley, punctuated by the occasional crackle of fireworks or firecrackers as someone set off celebratory pyrotechnics. Outside in the small courtyard, the bright lights from the living room and the Christmas tree cast dappled shadows and scattered points of light across the snow-covered flowerbeds and paving stones.
