Chapter 217 - [DEM] 217: The Boss

With Morpheus's strength, killing the scumbag producer would take a single slap.

He'd be reduced to ash, not even a hair left.

But Morpheus didn't do that. Calling this guy trash was an insult to trash.

Morpheus had never seen someone so vile.

He decided to make the man suffer. He kicked the producer's abdomen repeatedly, using just enough force to torment without killing.

The glasses-wearing man writhed in pain, his insides churning as if his intestines were about to snap.

Inori Yuzuriha, watching from the side, snapped out of her daze. She rushed forward, her slender arms wrapping around Morpheus's waist, trying to stop him.

But her strength was too weak to halt him.

Morpheus raised his right foot and stomped on the man's head, again and again. The thud, thud, thud of skull meeting pavement echoed, chilling onlookers to the bone.

Blood streamed down the man's face, his head nearly caved in. He lay sprawled, gasping weakly, too drained to even dodge.

His once-sharp eyes dulled, almost lifeless.

"Stop, please stop!" Inori clung to Morpheus, pleading.

Morpheus paused, pointing at the man. "Do you know why I'm beating him?"

Inori hesitated, then shook her head.

Morpheus explained, "Because he's a liar. A girl dreaming of becoming an idol was deceived by him, losing all her savings. He forced her into compromising deals, leading to miscarriage, abortion, and eventually, she jumped from a building."

"Yet this guy feels no remorse, already targeting other naive girls."

"He uses innocent girls to live a lavish life, pushing them into hell."

"Doesn't someone like that deserve a beating?"

Inori stared in disbelief at the bloodied man, unable to fathom that the person who'd praised her so highly was such a monster.

No, she shook her head. This was just one man's word.

She shouldn't trust someone who'd just beaten another to a pulp.

Morpheus saw her doubt but wasn't angry. They were strangers, and he'd just brutalized someone in front of her.

To others, he'd look like a violent maniac.

Why trust a maniac's words?

Her skepticism was reasonable.

"If you don't believe me, look into him yourself. Find out what kind of person he is."

Morpheus pushed Inori away, adjusted his clothes, and said, "I can save you once, but I might not be there a second time. Take care."

With that, he turned to leave.

He hadn't beaten the man for Inori's sake—just because the scum deserved it.

Whether Inori believed him didn't matter.

But…

"No way." Inori darted in front of him, arms outstretched, blocking his path.

"You can't leave. You assaulted someone. You should wait for the police."

Morpheus blinked. "…Fine."

He agreed readily. He had nothing better to do, so why not play along?

Soon, the police arrived.

Familiar faces: Wataru Takagi and Miwako Sato.

Morpheus knew them, but they likely didn't remember him. They'd only met once, after all.

He realized he'd wandered into Beika Town, explaining their presence.

Miwako, unusually in uniform, still couldn't hide her striking figure, drawing eyes as she walked. Takagi, trailing behind, seemed plain by comparison, almost a background character.

Takagi didn't mind. Seeing the bloodied man, he gasped, rushing to check on him. Confirming he was alive, he sighed in relief.

"He's still breathing. We need an ambulance now."

Miwako nodded, calling a hospital, then turned to Morpheus and Inori. "What happened here?"

Inori recounted the events impartially, including Morpheus's stated reason for the attack.

Takagi glanced at the man. "Is this guy really that bad?"

Miwako said, "Even if he is, you can't just assault someone."

She approached Morpheus, her gaze sharp. "Sir, you'll need to come with us to the station."

"Wait a moment."

A girl dressed in masculine clothing stepped forward, smiling at Takagi and Miwako. "We'll take it from here. Thank you for your work. You can go."

It was Kaoru Sayanomiya.

Takagi looked confused, while Miwako bristled. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Kaoru smiled. "Exactly what I said."

"Who are you?" Takagi asked.

Kaoru replied calmly, "You're not cleared to know. I've already called your superior. He'll notify you soon."

As she spoke, Miwako's phone rang. She answered, stunned.

Inspector Megure's voice came through. "Officer Sato, hand the case over to the girl in front of you and return."

Miwako, incredulous, asked, "What's going on?"

Megure gave a wry laugh. "A few minutes ago, Superintendent Hakuba himself called me. Do you think I can refuse?"

Miwako froze. Superintendent Hakuba was the head of Tokyo's Metropolitan Police.

The rank of Superintendent wasn't just a title—it was the pinnacle of Japan's police hierarchy.

A call from him left a mere Inspector Megure no room to argue.

If Miwako defied him, he could easily have her expelled from the force.

She'd initially thought Kaoru meant Megure as her "superior." Now she realized it was the superior of her superior's superior's superior's superior.

The highest-ranking official in the police.

Who was this girl?
