The ritual marking my rise as Alpha of the Everflame pack lasted only minutes, yet each second carved itself into my memory. Standing before my people, I watched the Shaman perform the ancient ceremony that would bind me to them forever.
His weathered face showed surprise when he realized I was taking the mantle, but warmth quickly replaced it. A genuine smile creased his features as he spoke.
"It brings me great joy to witness your ascension as Alpha of the Everflame pack, Orion. Alpha Herbert held deep affection for you."
Hearing that name sent childhood memories flooding back, creating a painful knot in my throat that I forced myself to swallow. I extended my hand without hesitation. The ceremonial blade sliced cleanly across my palm, allowing crimson drops to fall into the sacred vessel positioned before Altair's ancient statue. The bowl slowly filled with my offering until it reached the halfway mark.
