The journey to the hospital felt like the longest drive of my life.
Traffic crawled, each second stretching into torture. I was furious, trapped behind five cars I couldn't overtake, unable to escape the damned queue and get to the hospital faster.
But when I finally arrived, it was worse than I imagined. I had only caught a brief glimpse of the wreckage on the news before ordering it turned off.
I couldn't find the children. I couldn't find Harper.
They made me wait. And I was still waiting, pacing the hall relentlessly while Richard tried to calm me by offering a cup of coffee.
A cup of coffee. At a time like this. As if that would help anything.
"They're going to be fine," he assured me.
"Fine?" I grunted, glaring at him. He shrank back, looking away. "This is the sixth doctor who has stepped out of that room." I pointed toward the doctor who hurried off the moment he saw me.
