HARPER
"Good to see you're okay," William said, stepping toward me.
"You too," I replied quietly. "You're with my best friend. How come I didn't know?"
Had it started while I was away? Or before? If it had been earlier, I should've noticed unless I'd just been too distracted. Which, given everything, was very possible.
"There's not enough time to explain," William said with a light chuckle. "And as you can see, she clearly hates me."
I glanced at Clara. She was silent, but her eyes were glued to us, clearly listening to every word.
"You know him?" she asked finally.
I nodded. Her eyes immediately narrowed.
I scoffed. "Definitely not in the way you're thinking. I'm not trying to take your man."
"He's not my man," she snapped.
"Yeah, okay," I muttered.
I turned back to William. "Were you really stalking her?"
I hoped not. He seemed too cool to be a stalker, and I could tell Clara liked him even though she'd deny it with her last breath.
